The hardcore fans will always have some criticism for BioWare, but that negative feedback seemed to reach a boiling point after Dragon Age II arrived.
We maintain the game was still great, but it wasn't elite. It wasn't vintage BioWare in terms of overwhelming quality, and it wasn't a role-playing lover's RPG. But the developers say they plan to take the best parts of Dragon Age: Origins and DAII, and create one heck of a game in Dragon Age III . In speaking to PC Gamer , BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka talked about the team's plans:
"The team is going to have some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage of the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2."
Muzyka said there were lots of 90+ reviews for DAII, but the scores would decline if a critic had expected Origins , so "there was a misalignment of expectation there." But they take their core fans very seriously, and they fully intend to make 'em happy. Added Muzyka:
"One of the core values of Bioware is that we take feedback really seriously, and we know that the core fans who were expecting more Dragon Age Origins – we have to respond to that – we’re not willing to ignore that, we’re going to take that head on."
The bottom line is that BioWare will take feedback from both sets of fans – those who were disappointed with DAII and those who weren't – and incorporate all of it into the next entry. So ideally, we'll receive the best of both worlds…and that's appealing, is it not?
Well they better take that mass effect bs back and start production origins II
die
I enjoyed Mass Effect 2, so not everybody agrees with your "BS" comment.
Not cool, Jdog… not cool
What BS is there around Mass Effect 1 or 2 anyway? The fans loved it, the critics loved it, heck, even Ben who isn't a big Mass Effect fan could see reason for its popularity!!
I dislike mass effect and the way they're trying to push their mass effect layout on the DA gamers is pretty messed up they need to really come through with dragon age origins II and really listen to the people that are playing their games
There won't be a 3 strikes and you're out logic coming into this next installment at least not for me anyways
I can see where JDog is coming from actually, they did implant a lot of Mass Effect stuff into DAII like the way conversations unfold instead of the dialogue tree from Origins. I liked them both, but the new one is more restrictive. I think implementing it was (like the lack of armor for friends) another attempt and making things quicker and more streamlined for a group of theoretical fans that don't exist. But on the plus side it allowed the main character to have a voice instead of being silent. So it's give and take.
I like silent when choosing dialogue. I make the voice up in my head with the words I've chosen. I must be weird.
Claire, you're gonna love the Suikoden games.
Dragon Quest is like that, too, World & Claire. In DQ8, everyone has a voice actor except the Hero. Even in older Dragon Quest/Warrior games, the main character didn't even have text unfold unless it was text you chose!
That was a great game, taking DQ off Playstation was the gayest decision of all.
Let's not talk about it. I'm having a good day. Thinking about it makes me all grumpy.
The 1st one was okay but I'm not really into the LOTR and this series gives me that vibe a little too much.
blasphemy, you seem like a total Gollum fan. I loves me some fantasy but there's got to be something other than a couple political scuffles going on (that's all DAII was).
@world
Yeah that was another problem, the whole time I was playing I was thinking to myself 'well I'm really starting to not care about what's going on right now, there goes 65 bucks… ok time to play some call of duty'
I was like "Where the Darkspawn at up in this piece?"
It's nice to hear but I've heard it somewhere before. No series that has gone "faster and dumber" to quote The Ben, has ever gone back. DAII became a Day 1 buy after I played Origins, and now DAIII will be a late buy after I played DAII.
That battle system has to die and go to hell.
I just hope at the least the battle system is slower. During battle I'd choose spells and abilities but the enemies quite often would die before they get hit. It moves too fast. What's lame is when I turned the difficulty up from normal I'd just get slaughtered.
Enemies dropping out of the sky.. Why?

These guys actually care about their fans, I think. They said not so long ago they knew about the fan reaction towards DAII, and now they repeated it again, with more emphasis. I think they are REALLY listening to their fans. I love this kind of thing, unlike other situations when a company asks a question about the greatest game ever on their twitter, and the fan reaction is so huge, they tell them to stop and then they tell them such situation they asked about would only be possible with a 10 year development.
Well in that case I may have a serious look at DA3- because I loved DA:O, but couldn't be bothered with DA2.
Great!! This is wonderful news, and only makes me anticipate Dragon Age 3 even more.
Nice to know some developers out there listen to their fans and actually acknowledge the fans' demands, cos these fans are the life blood of the company, the ones who will definitely buy the game regardless of what other games come out around the same time.
Hope you're paying attention to this Square Enix.
But SE listens to their fans!
*Places hand to earpiece* "What's that? They are keeping Autobattle in FFXIII-2?"
Uh, nevermind.

I thumbed a ride to Poughkipsie and then rode a deer to Belle Isle. 🙂
World, you're extra funny this article. Funnier than usual. Do you just have an invested interest in Dragon Age, or have you been drinking a lil'?
Actually I haven't had a drink in over a month. I'm just an attention whore 🙂

A hint, drop DAII battle system but keep the big melons for DAIII. 😀
Ignitus, if they have melons like the ones on your avatar, I'm DEFINITELY getting DA3 😉
I would probably like the third one a little more if every male character in the game wasn't hitting on my male character.
*Every* male in the game hit on your male character? I am jealous. There was only 1 male character that *kinda* hit on my gay male character and then another male elf character that was difficult for my male character to flirt with and he had to go through hoops just to get where he wanted with him. What version of the game did you buy? I want it.
Now *that's* a classic RPG you got as your avatar right there, DarkZephyr! Oh man, Bloodlines were amazing.

I agree, Beamboom! 🙂 There are some interesting mods in the works even to this day. And upgraded patches still get turned out by the community. Its awesome.
I gotta get a gaming PC again. I am missing out on way too much.
yea ill believe it when i see it!
besides all the gameplay changes, they REALLY need to get a few more environmental artists!
kinda gets boring exploring the same world for 20+ hours!
worst case of cut and paste syndrome ever!
thats the whole point of these type of fantasy RPGs, you really need a really cool imaginative world to explore in.
thats what makes ME so good!
even the witcher 2, by far the best part of the game is just the worlds you can explore.
combat is pretty meh, but when its coupled with such beautiful backdrops you just dont care!
i hope they fix that armor mess up!! wow that really sucked!!
I was mixed about DA2. I preferred Origins not surprisingly, but at least the companions had a compromise on armour, the few upgrades would have been better if they got progressively better looking but mostly weapons and emphasis on the main. IIRC mass effect 2 had barely any upgrades for companions.
The plot was mixed success as well, ya the enviros weren't that varied but I actually kind of dug the subtext of people's freedom being taken away in the name of supposed security. Anyone that occasionally opens their eyes should see a parallel in the non-gaming world.
It'll be a wait and see but partly because I'll be more cash-strapped in school anyway.
