While most publishers and analysts will say there's room for a great many blockbuster titles during the holiday rush, gamers everywhere look at yet another massive fall lineup with trepidation.
It never fails. As each year passes, more and more giant titles loom large during the fourth quarter. We've gotten used to seeing a new Call of Duty in the fall but this year, EA's Battlefield joins the fray. And that's just the start. Here's a sampling of games that release in October and November:
And that's hardly the entire list. In a two-month span of time, gamers are gonna want a lot of titles; maybe more than a dozen. Remember a time when things were spread out a little more? Summer has always been a little down, but I honestly can't think of anything besides Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Catherine in July and August that draws my attention.
Furthermore, because so many games escape out of the holiday season, more big releases end up in January and February, which doesn't make things much easier. Not all gamers drop their controllers forever during the summer months; could we not pile so many of the biggest games of the year into a two-month span? Really, our wallets would appreciate it.
Oh gawd I want at least 90% of those games. If there was ever a time to win the lottery…..lol.
My wallet is going to be living in famine by December :'(
"I believe I can fly…" is probably the best analogy I could use when considering how improbable it will be for most normal folk to go out and spend some $800 dollars on such a loaded list… but hell wouldn't it be nice 🙂
Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3 and Skyrim are mine… all others will wait for a price drop if interested in getting them…

Wow, I sometimes forget how expensive our preferred form of entertainment can get. I feel for all the gamers out there. Don't forget to eat people. Feed the family first.
Luckily I have found ways to supplement my gaming hobby. Otherwise it would be Waiting for pricedrops or rentals.

Not to mention some PSN titles that are on the horizon that have my attention. Journey, From Dust, SideWay to mention a few. 7 of the titles on the list will make it to my collection. Also, I am sure as you stated Ben there are some more that I can not recall at this time. Help me out guys.
And.. If Sony somehow manages to get The PSVita out anywhere in the world this year it WILL be mine!
Last edited by FatherSun on 7/27/2011 9:50:17 PM
I was thinking the same about the Vita. How can I afford all this?!
Well, regardless of my wallet situation, It's gonna be a great holiday for gaming yet again!
Is From Dust coming to PSN too?
I think it is World. I'm reviewing it now. And if you ask me, don't get too excited for it. It's almost good but has some ugly nuisances holding it back.
Well, just curious, the only downloadable title to ever impress me is Flower.
Journey looks great. Can't wait for it.
Yeah I'm interested in Journey too, looks unique.
Don't forget Rainbow Moon….it's going to surprise you all.
Only Arkham City and Uncharted 3 for me. Maybe I'll buy some others long after their release but those 2 are the only Day 1 buys for me at this time.
Of that list only 3 are day 1 buys for me :
Dark Souls over TM (sorry was never a TM, vehicular combat Guy. Enjoyed the stories though)
Batman: Arkham City
and of course Uncharted 3
I don't really care for much anything else in that list besides AC, which I'll wait for the price to fall like i did with 2 and Brotherhood, and probably Battlefield 3.
plus I will also get Madden and Nba2k12 for my brother.
This year is going to be insane, but I'm preparing effectively. I have never seen as many games on the horizon as I am seeing this year. It all starts on September 6th when I pick up Resistance 3, Dead Island, and Driver: San Francisco. Then, in October, there isn't a single Tuesday that doesn't have a game I won't be getting. I can't wait.
Danny007, are you sure you want to purchase Driver… I am sorry but it really doesn't look very good – from the preview vids I have seen.
We will see what it scores, but I will be surprised if it gets more than 7.5.

Actually you're right. After I posted the comment I checked out some new gameplay videos on GameTrailers. The game looks completely pointless. I won't be getting it.
this 8 titles listed in this article that has my day one purchase. im scared…………………..i wont be seeing any sunlight for a while i know that much.
Of those listed games, Skyrim, Assassins, Uncharted, Rage, and MW3 top my playing list.
I still have original Batman and Demon's Souls games to play before I can think about their sequels. I have a shimmer of hope for Ace Combat. The last one I played was AC4 on PS2. Twisted Metal is hopeful, though, I'm not certain if it'll be more than a rental to me. Ultimately, I feel it's a competitive multi-player game and Tekken already takes that slot. It'd be cool to see all it's vibe and uniqueness though.
Yah, and that's not even counting all the damn HD Collections to get.. =P
Despite the glut outlined in the article, I still think that the release schedule is becoming *more* evenly distributed throughout the year, not less so.
Sony alone released at least one AAA title every month in the first half of this year. In total, there were maybe 17 or 18 AAA titles available on PS3 released so far in 2011, including at least 5 legitimate GOTY contenders.
How many years in the past have boasted such a first-half line-up? Last year…that's about it.
And, besides MGS 4, how many AAA titles have released during the summer?
edit: This may double-post. I'll try to delete the extras if that happens.
Last edited by Fane1024 on 7/27/2011 10:16:08 PM
That's the point. Virtually nothing ever releases during the summer.
And furthermore, up until a few years ago, the "other" summer in this industry was the first quarter. All the games were out, people had spent all their money, etc.
Now, with SO many games trying to come out for the holidays, really big-name titles that would normally release then escape into January/February, which makes things even crazier.
The whole summer drought thing is weird to me, I mean a lot of gamers are in school and that is a time when they have free time so why no bunch of big games?
Thankfully the only thing I'll be worried about getting right away is Dead Island and possibly the Resident Evil HD games (which are coming in at $20 a piece my friends).
I'll be as busy as a set of blue goat lips at a crabshack so Skyrim and Uncharted 3 might have to wait till xmas. I'm cited for the new Silent Hill but I'll wait for scores first, it better not fail.

$20 for Code Veronica is steep imo, despite that fact that I really like that game.

I agree Claire, but that's Capcom, never cutting anybody a break ever.
And still no sign of the boxed versions on Amazon..
I also agree about SH Downpour. I really, really hope it good. *fingers crossed*

Wait, they confirmed they are releasing digital and blu ray versions of RE4 and CV, are the digital versions going to cost less than the disc versions? If so, that's a first. Because the digital versions are $14 euro I think. From what I have read.
I've only seen Ben report on Blu Ray versions, I dunno what his source was, I can't confirm that anywhere except I've seen mention that Japan might get them.
just got off phone with gamestop…the resident evil remakes will only be available through digital distribution in na and europe. apparently there was some miscommunication that led people to believe we were getting a boxed release, but we are not. there is an article on the sixth axis clearing up this matter as well. no boxed release for us. japan is getting boxed releases. maybe that is what has cuased the confusion.

Capcom is so lame.
I've already pre-ordered
TESV Skyrim
Shadow/Ico HD Collection
Batman Arkham City
Dark Souls
if I had to choose a few others to add it'd be
MGS HD Collection
Assassin's Creed Revelations
Uncharted 3
Silent Hill HD Collection
Crap I forgot about the Silent Hill collection, gotta get that too. I need real horror.
yea, out of that list, only uncharted and battlefield for me, everything else can wait till i get it for cheap
Mamills, what creature is that right there… Never seen anything like it?

Mamills, those were some really great looking works!! Man I'd put some of those on my wall if I could.

Mamills,
That's some mighty fine work you've done there!
I'm definitely getting Uncharted 3, Saints Row the third, Battlefield 3, Twisted Metal, Batman and COD MW3. I'm not to sure about Rage though.
I know it might seem a BIT crazy, but I think i'm looking forward to Saints Row more than any other game on the list and I LOVE the Uncharted series.
You're not crazy unless I am too(!). Saints Row the Third is what I am looking most forward to as well.
Fall is like a woman. Your going to have a lot of fun, but your going to have to work two jobs to get through it.
Thank God for preorders!! Means the money I save now goes towards paying for a lot of those games coming out between Sept and Dec.
I already have Gears 3, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Batman Arkham City, ICO/SotC HD and MGS Collection on preorder and mostly paid off. Deus Ex, Twisted Metal, Assassin's Creed Revelations and Battlefield 3 I'm gonna wait for a big ol' price drop. Skyrim I'm gonna wait for the DLC to come out then get the GOTY Edition of Skyrim discounted well into next year.
As for early 2012, I've got Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite in my sights. SSX could be great, but am gonna wait for Ben's review on that one.
I have no interest in NFS The Run or Modern Warfare 3. Saints Row The Third, Silent Hill Downpour, RAGE and Dark Souls I might check out during next year's big mid-year drought.
My wallet is doing pretty well so far during this drought. I just hope my savings won't deplete too fast with Sept, Oct and Nov fast approaching. God, I can't wait for Uncharted 3 and Gears 3!!! AND the MGS and ICO Collection!!! Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite can't come soon enough!!!
As for the rest of you struggling to decide which games are worth getting Day 1, good luck! I've made my decisions, I hope you can make yours. 🙂
Think Uncharted 3 will have an epic CE?
Hey, Ben, this is off-topic, but can you write about Level-5's possible localizations of its other games? Level-5 International America is holding a poll on Facebook on which Level-5 game is the most wanted localized game. Among the list is the PS3 version of Ninokuni. Here's the article from Playstation Lifestyle.
http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/07/27/level-5-needs-your-localization-vote/
Got gamefly so I'll be playing Uncharted 3 and Batman AC this fall. I know the Call of Duty fans will have MW3 on low availability for months. Blacks Ops is still on low availability
Last edited by JDC80 on 7/27/2011 11:09:48 PM
I will be fine. The only things off that list I am getting Day 1 are Dark Souls and Uncharted. I am waiting for some price drops on some of the other.
By the way does anyone know when the new R&C is coming out?
10/18, last I heard.
Thanks, I'll pick that one up too.
PS3 exclusives for me only. multiplat games will wait till their price drops.
The fall is the hardest time of the year for me to get the games I want because of the holidays. Uncharted 3 is definitely on my list, but I have to pay more attention to how much I spend and that makes it a tough decision on the other 2 or 3 games I'll probably be able to get. I have to make sure I don't put myself at the top of my gift buying list as that spot is reserved for my daughter.
Batman and Ace Combat are the other games I'm most interested in, but Ace Combat seems to have changed a lot from what I've seen in videos. I'm not sure I'll like what they've done that makes it look like a different franchise to me.
