The "Uncharted" movie has a new director and fans are once again urging Neil Burger to consider Nathan Fillion for the leading role.
Recently, Burger said he acknowledged the fan outcry to have the "Firefly" star play Nathan Drake, but wouldn't say anything further. As for Fillion, he told ScreenRant that he'd still love to have the part, but he doesn't want to push too hard. In other words, he doesn't want to "sour" Burger on the idea. Said Fillion:
"I am certainly still interested in playing Nathan Drake. I think every actor I know wants their action-adventure hero, their Indiana Jones. That would be a good one for me, I think. What I don’t want is people pressuring that poor man [director Neil Burger] and souring him on the actual idea. If we could somehow just… do you remember the movie Inception? I think that’s what we need to do. We need to let him land on the idea on his own."
Well, that might be out of the realm of possibility, Nathan. Burger already has the idea in his head; gamers sorta put it there. As we said earlier, the director already knows all about it. But we do understand the concept and besides, we think there's an underlying statement in Fillion's words…it sounds like he wants to get the part based on his own merits as an actor, rather than simply winning a "fan favorite" vote, so-to-speak.
Gotta respect that.
Indeed. And my goodness, he even LOOKS like Drake. Gotta love that whole package idea.
Hey i've been a long time reader but never signed upto leave a comment. I personally think that Fillion has what it takes to pull the job off but hollywood might look for a bigger star like that guy from Limitless I 4got his name i'm sorry But at least the film looks like it's going in a better direction than what the previous director had in mind
Welcome to PSXE!
And I agree with you. I didn't think Marky-mark was the best choice either, but I still had full confidence he could pull it off. (He's better than people give him credit for)
Hopefully Fillion will find his way in, and if they need big names, hopefully the big names will filter into the supporting roles. If they did that, it could be a -BIG- break for Fillion. I'd like to see that happen.
Man, that's one long sentence….J/K. I do agree with you, Hollywood always wants the more publicized actor so they can cover more ground with less money (ie: the more people that know the actor, the more people with see the film).
Yeah, welcome here!
Bradley Cooper, who is a big shot right now so he could get it. But then Jennifer Aniston would be Elena
Jennifer Aniston as Elena? Oh god, please don't let that happen! Anyway, I was watching bits of the Uncharted 3 Comic-Con panel and it occurred to me that the people I want to play the characters on the movie are the voice actors themselves. It'll probably never fly with Hollywood, but that would be brilliant IMO.
To me Fillion is the clear choice. There are a lot of other actors who could do it, but they don't have the full package Fillion could bring.
I'm not the director though so who am I to say?
Ha…after reading some of these comments, it sounds like people have a man crush on Fillion. lol j/k Seriously though, they shouldn't make this movie, it's so unnecassary.
If they are going to do a movie, which they are. Why not want the best fit possible for the role, coming from a fan of the games?

Totally disagree FM23! Drake is this generations Indiana Jones!
Uncharted needs to made, and it needs to made with actors/actresses that play the parts.
After watching a video from SDCC, I do not want to see anybody else playing Drake, Elena and Sully other than those who play them in the game!
@Big…I love Uncharted, thats why a movie wouldn't do it any justice because as Max said, once you change the characters or don't get the characters to play like how most of us remember, then the movie ends up sucking. I mean, if these actors can get their voices to sound almost like who they are trying to imitate, than maybe I might want a movie but as for now…I say NEH…lol
Sidebar: Look at Batman, Justice League, Transformers…the new stuff isn't like the stuff I use to watch and I see this movie going in the same direction like Michael Bay TF series. Bay doesn't know the material so I can only assume the director behind to project isn't well informed either. Who knows…but tha't whats going through my head right now.
The last director left due to "artistic differences" with Naughty Dog. I'm pretty sure it'll stay relatively true.
This kind of thing will be on par with Tomb Raider turning to movies. Those ended up quite successful.
We already have a bromance with Drake so one more with his human counterpart can't hurt.
Max and FM-
I agree that the voice actors are the actors who should be playing the roles in the movie. I've been saying that since I seen the behind the scene stuff in the games, watching them do all the mo cap. They are great actors not just voice actors doing all the physical things you would see in a real action movie.
I watched the comic con interview too and I absolutely agree they would be perfect for the film. But if not Nolan North I would like Fillion. But as FM pointed out Nolan is Drake hearing someone else's voice would be a little disturbing when you've come to like what we get out of the games. As Nolan pointed out in that SDCC interview his personality is Nathan Drake, they are one in the same. Not to mention the three of them (Nate, Sully, and elenas actors) all said they'd love to be in the movie in that interview. Which shows great passion for their roles as the characters, which we'd see on screen, which wouldn't compare to someone trying to pick up what they've already accomplished.
I also found it interesting that JJ Abrams told Nolan North that the intro to Uncharted 2 was the best he's seen in any movie, game, show, etc…

FM23 – Indeed. Anybody, I mean anybody.. but who I have heard and seen (remember, the motion capture) in the magnificent Uncharted series would be an injustice to the characters I absolutely love. I would watch it regardless however.
Underdog15 – Excellent point. The original Tomb Raider did quite well.
World – I disagree with that. Drake's human counterpart is Nolan North. As good of a job he has done the Drake games, why couldn't Nolan pull it off?
bigrailer19 – Thanks for further clarifying my very point. I would go far as to say that the characters in Drake's are some of my favorite all time in any media as a whole. Drake himself is in my top 3 all time characters period. I never knew that JJ Abrams offered that compliment. Thanks for the info!!

Max-
Your welcome for helping clarify! 😉
If you didn't get a chance to watch the whole 50 min panel discussion with ND and the Voice Actors you should. One question from the audience was directed at the Voice actors about reprising their roles in the movie and they all said yes. Also that's the same discussion Nolan North said JJ had said that about Uncharted 2. Id check it out. It's ery interesting. I found te link on twitter but it referred to both the ps blog and gamespot. You could probably just you tube it.
For those that wanna see the true talents of these voice actors and how well they could fit into the film I recommend watching it too.
Yeah I have never played a Tomb Raider game all the way throught unless you count a PS2 demo, but I saw one movie and I thought it was the corniest thing ever…just my opinion.
@FM23
Oh, well in that case, I guess Tomb Raider wasn't a huge success. XD
If you hate corny, I can almost completely promise you the Uncharted movie will not be for you… nor will Indiana Jones…
they are not going to cast fillion. hollywood will want a bigger name. i read on the hollywood reporter that limitless star bradley cooper is a strong possiblity.

By what means does that hold any water? Do they know something the director doesn't? It's all speculation and we will see but in regards to who can play Drake the best, well that's why everyone is saying Fillion.
Funny thing though no one considers Nolan North who is Drakes voice actor. He looks a lot like Drake and obviously has the voice, and if you've seen any of the behind the scenes stuff from the games, they are not just voice actors in a booth. They are truly actors doing physical things ND has them actually playing out scenes on the mo cap stage. He's my number 1 pick followed by Fillion. But it's not up to me, so… Well see what happens.

@Big
The new directer did an interview with ign were he said himself that Bradley cooper would be a strong possibility.

O'Russell also said this about Fillion, and where they are more specifically at with the film right now- "Iâve seen a little bit of that, yes. That was brought to my attention. So, you know, I think heâs a good actor… Where we are right now is that weâre literally starting from scratch on the screenplay, and I think that once we finish it, then weâll go to actors and see whoâs available and whoâs right for the parts. Whenever that happens."
So now where are we? Nobody knows. Like I said it's speculation. At this point all it is ,is fans saying what they want.
If they don't go with Fillion, I'd personally like them to cast the two leads from the show "Burn Notice" as Drake and Sully, those two practically have the whole thing down already.
I agree with Bruce Campbell for Sully but the guy who plays Michael hmm I don't see him as Drake. I've only see him play a few roles though so maybe he can do it.
Wow nice Idea, I do think Bruce Campbell would make an excellent Sully. I am definitely pushing for Fillion as Drake though.
A question:
Why do people want Nathan Fillion to play Nathan Drake? What's the story behind all this? I don't know where this all started. I'm being serious.
I feel the same way because I still don't see why he so important, but then again I don't know his acting history. He is a mystery too me, but someone will answer this.
He's a natural fit for the role. He already has the Nathan Drake demeanor… not just the look. If you know anything about him as an actor, you'd know it's a perfect role for him. The role does him justice, and he does the role justice. It's an unusually good fit.
That's why fans want him. They know he can pull it off exceptionally well.
Edit: If you want to watch him a bit, Firefly (which he stars in) is available on Netflix. Otherwise, I'm sure you can find him on YouTube.
Here's a clip about a gaming condition with him. Not really an example of how he fits Drake, but still funny…

here he is on Jimmy Kimmel

And finally, some of that attitude I feel matches the role:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uMAKtXlXf4 (This one is the best one. Lots of Firefly quotes, many of which involve Fillion)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWo6nXIj9Bk
Also, man crush? Absolutely!! He is just -SO- charming!!!
best quote in the first firefly link: "If someone tries to kill you,… well, you just… kill them right back!"

Watch Firefly. You'll get it.
Yea just watch firefly and serenity, and it'll click…
As everyone has said just watch Firefly/Serenity.
The character Mel has all the attributes of Drake.
thanks for those links Underdog15, those were some really funny videos with Fillion! Love the interview on Jimmy Kimmel LOL!
"Aaaahh, the sounds of children's laughter and feet pitter-pattering around my ship, haha, SHUT UP!!"
—
"Jane, your mouth is talking, you might want to look to that."
—
"First rule of battle, little one, don't let them know where you are."
Fillion – "Whooooo!!! Blam!!! Yeah!! Come on!! I'm right here!! I'm right here!!! You want some of me?!?! Die!!! Whoooo!!!"
—
"Mercy is the mark of a great man." (stabs enemy) "Well, I guess I'm just a good man." (stabs enemy again) "Well, I'm alright"
—
(Sitting naked on a rock in the middle of no where)
"Yep… well, that went well…"
—
"I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you!"
—
Fillion – "If anyone gets nosy, just… shoot 'em"
Zoe – "Shoot them?"
Fillion – "Yeah, shoot 'em… politely."
If those aren't enough to convince you that Fillion is perfect for the role of Drake, then I don't know what is. I got most of those quotes from this Youtube video:
10 minutes into playing the first uncharted, i was convinced that the game creators had to be huge firefly fans. that conviction only increased from there.
obviously, north has done a fantastic job in the role, but it was tailor made for fillion. i could see the much speculated cooper pulling it off, but to have anyone other than north or fillion play him almost seems like a crime.
Thanks for the welcomes. Sory about the lack of periods. I do that a lot when not typing from a pc or laptop.;) I don't want Nathan Fillion to be type cast into this kind of role, but then again I don't want to see someone that does'nt fit at all for the sake of a broader audience appeal.
Nothing wrong with being type cast. It's only bad when the actor only fits one type. 🙂
One other little friendly tidbit about the site. You'll notice that an original poster will have a reply button, but the ones that follow do not. If you want to reply to a specific thread of replies, just reply to the original poster, and your post will appear at the bottom of that particular thread. (You'll notice all replies in a thread are indented)
I like Fillion's attitude on this and I'd like to help him kidnap Burger and dive into his dreams to put the right idea in his head.
I know he doesn't want to pigeonhole Burger but since he IS on his radar already maybe he should be proactive and produce a short as Drake to show the director and maybe win him over or at least get into his head early on. Like "Coooo-stanza!"
Sounds like a good idea, but as Fillion said, could be pushing it. We want Burger to realise it for himself that Fillion is a great choice.
I just hope Burger has watched Firefly and Serenity. If he hasn't, send him a few copies on DVD to give him the impression of Fillion as the perfect Drake.
BRRRRRRRAAAAAWWWWRWRRRMRMRMMRMRMMMMM!!!
Fillion tweeted that his vote is for Sam Worthington. Definitely have to disagree with him there! He should vote for himself!!
There's almost no way I believe that someone at Naughty Dog didn't use him as reference. ALL those Firefly lines are Drake! HIS friggin HAIR is Drake!! Creepy resemblance. Best of luck to Fillion!
Stay Classy PSX "I immediately regret this decision."
Do it
SO I finally got a good glimpse of this Fillion guy and nothing about him reminds me of Drake, just his flamboyant (not in a bad way) body movement and his hair. But besides that, he himself doesnt remind of of the famous Drake. With that said, I can see why people would want him to play Drake even though he reminds me of the guy from all those forgettable Mummy movies
Have you ever heard of Uncharted?!?! Look at my and Dancemachine's posts up above.
I don't understand how you can't see it. It's popular opinion that he'd be good. The opinion is popular for a reason.
Yea haha I just don't get what your seeing. You remind me of the director that just left the project. 😉
Seriously though go watch firefly and serenity. Not only are they worth watching but that will give you a great glimpse of Fillion and how he can portray Drake very well.
I want Robert de Niro to be Sully 🙂
I still think Sly Cooper is the only man cut out for the job, but either of the guys will be great for Drake – they can both pull off Drake's attitude pretty well.
The least Burger can do is include Fillion in some sort of screen test or audition between him and maybe Bradley Cooper or any other fan favourites.
I think it comes down to whether or not Burger wants star power in his film. I say Nathan Fillion if he wants to please the fans, Bradley Cooper if he wants star power whilst staying true to Nathan Drake's character.
Even if all the other characters are played by big stars who might not fit, I'd rather see Fillion in the role anyday over Mark Wahlburg or, God forbid, Brad Pitt….
… you know, I don't think Brad Pitt would be all that bad. Not sure if he's physically up for it though, but if Harrison Ford can still do Indy at 60 years old, I reckon Brad Pit could pull off a good Nathan Drake.
So yeah, my picks for Drake
1. Nathan Fillion
2. Bradley Cooper
3. Brad Pitt
And the Asian guy from Hangover, Community and Transformers 3 to play Eddy Raja from the first game. Ken Jeong is hilarious and awesome!!
I think Nathon was staying quite classy with his comments.
My 1st vote would be for Nathon Fillion
My 2nd vote would be for Gerald Butler
