There was a time in the industry's history (and it wasn't that long ago) when the name "Unreal" was synonymous with FPS. This generation's shooter war is between Call of Duty and Battlefield ; in the '90s, there was once a war between Unreal Tournament and Quake .
And the iconic fast-paced franchise did have an impact on each PlayStation generation. UT was a launch title for the PS2 and Unreal Tournament III actually hit the PS3 first back in 2007. Yes, it's true; there was a multiplatform shooter that 360 owners had to wait for.
But since that time, we've heard nothing from the UT series. Thing is, developer Epic Games has been cranking on their new award-winning franchise this generation, Gears of War . Will they ever come back to Unreal ? Well, Epic President Mike Capps gave fans hope via IndustryGamers :
"We have a couple other major franchises that we've not been paying attention to. It's been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it's an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here. We haven't been giving it the attention it deserves because we've been focusing on Gears of War and we're still a relatively small company."
He adds that going back to Unreal "just makes plain business sense" and of course, every company needs to make money. Capps said the team has been focusing on new IPs lately ( Bulletstorm , Shadow Complex , etc.) but from a business standpoint, they should spend more time with their existing franchises. After all, that's where the money is.
We definitely want a new UT. It's one of those old-fashioned styles of shooter that doesn't take itself seriously at all. It's just runnin' 'n gunnin' at its best.
