It seems another PC-oriented developer is bragging that their new game will be the "best-looking" one yet on consoles.
We heard this on a frequent basis from Crytek in regards to Crysis 2 and while that game turned out extremely well, we at PSXE don't quite agree that it's the most impressive graphical presentation on consoles. Well, not on the PlayStation 3, at any rate. But now, we're hearing a similar claim from id Software, the team that will give us Rage in October. According to Ripten , id boss John Carmack says they've "always pushed the limits of cutting edge technology with their games," and they're doing it again with Rage . The result?
"We are arguably the best looking game on the consoles today and the point is we are running at two times the frame rate of what other people might argue is the best looking console game."
There's no doubt that what we've seen from Rage thus far has been extremely impressive, and we have super high hopes for the game. Haven't heard much of anything from id since Quake , but whatever. I keep getting this feeling that PC developers, with all their bragging and boasting, don't ever really play console games.
With Uncharted 2 (and Uncharted 3 ) and Gran Turismo 5 , among others (like KZ2 and KZ3), I think console exclusives have stated their case, and I really didn't see Crysis 2 vastly outstripping such accomplishments. On monster PCs, that's a little different but they're always talking about "the best-looking console game."
Well, if you think so, Carmack. You guys just always seem a little too…separated from the rest of the gaming world sometimes.
Related Game(s): RAGE
I'm highly skeptical of this claim. These guys at Id are PC specialists. But the PS3 is a very different beast than PCs. Sure they would probably be able to rule on the 360 but I'm not so sure if they can really utilize the PS3 properly and for maximum effect the way Naughty Dog has been known to do.
And by the way, I remember hearing similar claims not too long ago about the visual power of Brink and how it was on par with Killzone 2, and we all know how that ultimately turned out.
And crisis, that game looked pretty, but no Killzone.
Yeah well we will have to see, so far uncharted 3 has THE best graphics i have ever seen, and that is on 5(?) year old tech. The guys at naughty dog are beating the graphical power of modern pc's with a console.
apparently we have some elitists in the crowd, battlefield 3 isn't that pretty on pc, nor is crysis 2
i think you need to go play the witcher 2.
that makes uncharted 3 look like a freaking ps2 game!
hell crysis made uncharted 3 look like a ps2 game!
The game does looks great. And for the detail to remain high while running at 60fps like it does, I'm eager to give this game a shot come October.
Me too! Looks killer sexy. =)
Like a chocolate strawberry?
ya………….
They has only show pc gameplay. When they show me the game running on consoles at 60fps then we can talk.
They showed it at E3 on the 360 at 60fps.
Ill give him the benefit of the doubt untill rage review scores roll in and prove otherwise. But with U3 out after rage i doubt it.
Rage: "Best-Looking Console Game"
LULZ xD
I wouldn't say 'The Best', but possibly, in the same league as our ps3 exclusives we have become accustomed to.
I am positive the game will look great, but considering Uncharted 3 has to be seen it's release form, let us hold off on crowning the graphics king.
Anyways, what is up with all the developers running their mouths as of late?
To build up hype and awareness? We are discussing it right now after all. =)
Yes Claire, because hype always works.
Plus, anybody remotely interested in this game does NOT need hype, nor do they need some multiplatform title producer trying to convince PS3 users (for example) on the quality of their visuals.

I never said hype works or that I approve.
Don't you think there are people who don't know much about this game?
There might be some that don't but my guess is those that actually CARE about the graphics do.
Rage isn't a military warfare shooter. So don't expect to see over a dozen or more soldiers on a battlefield battling it out with guns. And don't expect to see ships populating the sky or tanks on the battlefield. Without having to worry about making such large and epic battles, Id can concentrate or more detail per enemy and character etc.
And seeing that Id Software is known for "corridor shooters" I'm seeing a lot about Rage that suggests things will stay very corridor. The open world stuff appears to be more of a hub that connects you to enclosed or underground dungeon-like levels.
Rage will offer a good level of moodiness and ambient creepiness that'll be impressive but it doesn't appear likely that'll it'll be throwing around as many objects or all of the insanity that comes with full on military war zone shoot outs.
Personally, I'm not too worried about how good it'll look. I know it will look good( even if it isn't being custom fitted to PS3's hardware) and I know it's not "another" military shooter, so I'm excited for it as I know Id Software does do what they do very well.
You nailed it.
It's John Carmack….he gave us Doom and Quake. You listen to him.
exactly!
when the father of the industries most popular genre, one of the worlds best programmers, AND a rocket scientist speaks you shut up and listen!
most people would not even accomplish one of those in there lifetime…….. let alone all 3!
Actually, whenever ANYONE speaks you shut up and listen, that's the key to understanding what that person wants to say. But if someone makes dubious claims, no matter who they are or what they've accomplished, they still remain dubious claims. And this is one such occasion.
I've been over this conversation since IGN said that Crysis 2 on 360 was the "best looking console game." Almost every AAA game today looks amazing, just give me great gameplay and consistent framerates.
This game does look amazing though. Can't wait to play it.
Doom 3 was goregous on the original Xbox and seemed to be way ahead of its time. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise.
Also, its tough to even compare GT5 to a FPS in terms of graphics. Two way different games
You can compare the graphics of games, it shouldn't matter what genre it is.
I disagree, you'd be comparing apples and oranges in my opinion. Getting a character or enemy to look good/realistic is much harder than making a car look realistic, IMO.
I also think that the John Carmack and id should not be thrown in the group of the other PC developers than run their mouths for the sake of doing so. They don't do it to the point of annoying, and they tend to deliver. For instance, EA (BF3) and Crytek (Crysis) have been notorious for overpromising and underdelivering.
That's true, but people are going to do it anyway.
In my original post I don't mean by what game is superior by graphics, yes they are different games, but what's going on in the graphics, what could the other game have used that could have been useful for that game, and all the technical stuff that I have no clue of. That's what I meant by it. I keep forgetting to detail my post when I do It's a bad habit of mine. lol
Haha I understood what you meant. You're right in the sense that yes, you could compare the graphics technically. But in layman's terms, I find it hard to compare how good Polyphony makes a Nissan look to its real-life counter part versus how good id makes the characters look in Rage. It seems more fitting to compare it to Killzone 3 for obvious reasons.
That's what I originally meant in my post I didn't mean it like that though. LOL
I'd like to point out that there are cars and whatnot in RAGE that you drive around.
You can drive vehicles in Rage.
Hmmmm, I don't think these PC guys really see things quite in the same way as a lot of us here do.
I'm thinking that those PC guys keep saying this because they're also counting their own PC world in as part of our consoles too.
The graphics in RAGE look great. Already better than Crysis 2 but it will be no Killzone 3, Uncharted 3 or God of War 3.

To be honest, I actually thought Crysis 2 looked very very good, considering how it was "squeezed" onto consoles. I did read about how Crytek had to go to great lengths to get Crysis 2 looking like it did on consoles…
I loved the environments and post processing effects; just short of Killzone 2/3 I think; but generally very high up there.
The one thing I noticed was the shadowing. It seems Crytek used a dappling technique to obscure the shadow mapping blockiness that has plagued so many console titles in the past. Watching the way the trees cast shadows across walls and objects in Crysis 2 is a dream. I think though – from what I have seen – in Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3, the exclusivity of the technology used has enabled the relevant devs to get shadow mapping working properly, or at least better than non-exclusive devs.
I don't know what happend to the shadowing in GT5, that to me still boggles the mind. Let us hope that GT6 on the PS4 will not have such graphical anomalies…
Q!

Hey id, look at Rage, now look at Uncharted 2, now back to Rage, now back to Uncharted 2. Sadly, Rage isn't Uncharted 2, but if you stopped making comments like that, it may be (though I doubt it). Look down, back up. What are you doing? You're making silly statements about a title that hasn't been released yet. Look back at Uncharted 2. Yes, that bar is set quite high…

Damn, all that head bobbing up, down, and all around, gave me a frigging kink in the neck.
More skeptic than believer on this. Crytek said the same thing, better yet the ps3 version they were claiming was maxing out the ps3 hardware blah blah and crysis 2 wasn't really close to maxing the ps3 out. The only people ill believe when saying it will be the best looking game on consoles first or third dev imo are Nd, Gurreilla, Dice, Insomanic, Sucker Punch, and Rockstar
Anybody want a Uncharted 3 Beta code?
Give me your mail id.
Just like Crysis 2 on consoles.lol. I still expect it look very good. it has been under development for a while.
As long as the game is fun i dont give a flying crap what it looks like. Brag about story and gameplay first, please.
the game does look pretty good. i do recall carmack creating somewhat of a ruckus a while back by telling edge magazine that ps3 version was only running at 20-30fps vs 50-60fps on the 360/pc. id later said the ps3 version was a work in progress, and should be a 60 fps for ps3, too. he's also on record in game informer at the start of this gen stating he was pulling for ms becuase thought their developement tools were so much better, and he thought sony's asymetric cpu was a mistake. he didn't think the ps3 would dominate like sony's previous hardware. one of many pc types that seemed take shots at the ps3 early.
he was also critical of ms' policy for charging for each disc packaged with its game.
The disc fee thing was later revealed to be false.
The cost for specially arranging data between discs, added packaging materials, and added shipping weight is where some added expense is going to affect a multi disc game. Businesses will want to reduce as much bottom line deterants as possible.
Word has it that MS has reduced the size of their protection data per disc, effectively freeing up like 1.5GB of storage.
That can actually go a long ways for devs who have been used to cramming everything in under 6.8GBs

As far as a multiplat goes… Crysis 2 is one of the better looking games i've ever seen. It does get tiring seeing this statement all the time. And a majority of the time they never deliver!!! The game looks awesome but i'll believe it when i play it.
yeah, and crysis 2 definitely blew uncharted 2 away. i'd say i'll believe it when i see it but since i dont have any interest in the game then that wont happen.
kinda of topic but i tried the forums and it wouldnt give me anything. I'm having trouble with mass effect 2. i installed it and downloaded the patch but the game wont go past the initial loading screen (that green spinning disc on the corner) anyone know how to get past this? i havent even got to the menu screen at all.
John that game doesn't run at 60fps so you really don't want to play it anyway =p
Sorry, that's the most help I can give
Wow. Another shooter focusing on frame-rate. I just don't care anymore!
Fast action games that reward cognitive precision timing is where 60fps counts the most for me: Tekken, ninja gaiden, racers basically require 60fps for me to enlist. Slower paced games or games that rely heavily on visual detail to convey a certain level of aural thickness and emotion, I'd rather have 30fps: RPGs, Heavy Rain etc I preference the added detail.
