The beta for Activision's new subscription-based Call of Duty Elite service kicks off next month, and the publisher's social media manager Dan Amrich has revealed the good news at his personal blog :
Over 2 million people have already signed up to be part of the beta test. The users are coming fast, too; only last week the number sat at about 1 million and we've still got a month to go. Remember, Elite is something that will be free for everyone and it just so happens to include some paid elements. If you need clarification, make sure to check out the rundown of all the free stuff . As of now, we don't have exact details of the paid content, as that will be for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , which doesn't launch until November 8.
We can pretty much guarantee the avid users are gonna want new weapons, maps and other worthy content.
In the background "Duke" is fittingly towering over this article. I think he would have a few things to say about this news… with his gun:)
On a more serious note… this is worse than DLCs.
My credit card was updated and I forgot to tell Amazon so they had trouble with my Duke order, I fixed it but I'm super worried that it won't arrive tomorrow. AHG

God I hate how sheepish the masses are, although that's in no way limited to CoD.
I'm very curious to see what they decide to charge for with this subscription. I'm guessing it will offer stuff that breaks the experience for anybody that doesn't pay. Overlord Kotex will be happy.
I gotta admit I think your right. They very well could ruin the experience for anyone not subscribing.

I gotta admit I love my frantic, quick draw call of duty shooters! I'm excited to see what they have in store with this.
I like online stat tracking for my games. I find that interesting and rather innovative. I certainly would never pay for such a thing, but I'll have a look at the free stuff from time to time.
Considering I refuse to spend money on MW2.5 many games offer much of this stat-tracking for free. You really shouldn't have to pay for anything that should be included, especially for a game that really hasn't evolved in a few years. Not to mention the map packs are ridiculously over-priced. $15?!! A piece!
One day I realized, that CoD really doesn't offer anything special. And the amount of bugs people pay to suffer for makes me feel bad that the Dev's obviously don't care. Its all about getting the game out of the door every November.
I think it is more like MW 1.75 really.
I'm willing to give it a peek, I signed up…we'll see.
I got the email to join the closed beta last week. But I didn't join in because I don't even own Black Ops.
So I'm not sure what's even up with that Elite.
Even at free, the effort to do anything Call of Duty anymore, costs too much. No thanks.
kinda funny watching EA announce there battlelog system at E3 last week, but eh i guess the more features out there the better………… right?

Curious to see what happens once people have to pay for this.
I am nervous about it, because it could set the standard of online games to come in the future.

i dont hate cod infact i like it….mw anyway has great online gameing with mates but elite does look pants tho…..paying monthly to get some stats given to u is stupid
Yea a monthly fee might be a little too much on top of pricey DLC's, but who knows they could add some really cool features that contribute alot of value to the game, just saying. I just think it sucks that so many people want to see COD fail so badly, I would much rather them make a kick ass MW3 and be successful, than drop a total dud and fail. Oh well, more thumbs down for me I guess hahahaha.
I am the first to admit to being a fan and online player of COD. However, the last pack that came out for MW2 shocked me be flying up to $15 without warning. It was the first time I passed on anything that had to do with what I considered to be the best multiplayer FPS available.
I did pick up both the new packs for BO but as an avid COD fan, I am extremely skeptical and concerned with the path this series seems to be taking. The fact that players are encouraging a monthly charged subscription similar to that of WOW, for things that were always free is disappointing. I understand that you don't have to pay for the online service, but let's face it. Anybody who plays it online to anything past the first 50 (or w.e. it will be for MW3) are going to want all the extra goodies available.
If they were to make packs $20 a piece, spread them out more and include extra content it would be a much much better route.
I know it's a bit of a rant, but to sum it up. This is a bad idea. It seems like a skeezy strategy to make even more money than they had from their somewhat over priced map packs in the first place. This can only lead to bad tings… (I will reserve further comment on this topic until the details of the paid service are released, still sketched out tho.)
p.s.
If they make weapons part of the charged content I may give up on the series all together. Give us some extra cash and we'll give you a significant advantage over everybody who isn't willing to send us a check. Sounds a bit like organized crime to me. (some exaggeration is most certainly included in the above post)
