Ben-DutkaTwo of the most popular games on the planet were Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II , so it came as no surprise to anyone when Activision spent a colossal $91 million to acquire the game's independent publisher, RedOctane. But hey, you gotta spend money to make money, and sales of Guitar Hero II have hit 1.58 million, ultimately generating over $114 million in revenue. And that last number is only going to go up with the release of the Xbox 360 version in April.
But at the same time, the team kinda got ripped apart when MTV purchased the game's developer, Harmonix, for $175 million. Therefore, future Guitar Hero development is being handled by Activision and Neversoft, but that doesn't mean Harmonix and MTV are left out in the cold. Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopoulos and vice-president of EA Partners David DeMartini have announced that EA would be publishing and distributing the upcoming MTV-branded game; developed by, of course, Harmonix.
Rigopoulos revealed the plan to GameSpot at this year's GDC, and while he offered no details on the project, he did say this- "The project we're working on is by far, by far our most ambitious undertaking ever." Okay, great! Soooo….what is it? Hopefully, we'll find out soon enough.
