Alice Writer: Madness Returns Is A Game For Adults

Although it isn't as popular as a more mainstream title like GTA or CoD, the game could still prove controversial amongst anti-game, anti-violence activists.

Alice: Madness Returns is a dark, twisted take on the classic tale for kids and that sort of interpretation can always lead to backlash. So we asked creator and writer RJ Berg what he would say to parents who believe this overhaul of a beloved childhood classic is borderline sacrilegious. He replied as follows:

"The game's M-rating clearly communicates that this is not an entertainment for children. EA and Spicy Horse have been very direct on this subject. This is a game for adults. One of the many reasons Alice's popularity has endured is that the original story was never intended to be solely for children."

It's about time we got a common-sense answer to this; parents and politicians have yet to figure this out: this isn't 1985. Games aren't just for children. Asking if parents will get mad about the Alice sequel is like asking if they'd get mad at a new Saw . …what difference does it make? Your kids aren't supposed to be anywhere near it, anyway .

I read somewhere that the first game will be included as a download. I believe it was stated in the pre-order info on either Play or Amazon.

As for me, the more I read about this game the more excited I get. The artwork looks to be exceptional, as unique as in Bioshock (who is the greatest visual experience I've had in many years). The only worry I got is that the gameplay of Alice is too traditional, I have not seen the same degree of creativity and finesse as we have with the awsome attacks/abilities in Bioshock.

All I can say is 'duh'. Most games no longer have a target market of children, and or anyone to assume that they do is pure stupidity. You only need to take a look at a small portion of Alice to know that it truly is slightly insane, as the name indicates, and that is something that I enjoy. I only wish that I could support this game day 1. 🙁
Peace.

Precisely. These knobs-for-brains reporters asking mom's about videogames that neither party know anything about is getting tiresome and downright embarrassing. If only everyone just played games and didn't watch the nonsense that is on TV. We'd be one step closer to a perfect world.

Well other than the Disney movie, I don't think Alice in Wonderland is intended for children. I mean.. you got cats smokin' hookahs, eatin' mushrooms, and queens chopping off heads. So it only makes sense to have an "M" rating. Right?

I think the Mature rating should be 18+ instead of starting at 17, after all 18 is the first year of adulthood.

but at 17 and sometimes younger you can be tried as an adult. i believe in down under its 15 you can be considered an adult but im not sure. i fully understand your point and on some level agree with it. kind of a double standard.

Everything for kids is violent already, they don't need games like this to become disturbed.

Not to change the subject, but IS there any word on when the ps store opening up? THEY did say at the end of this month, RIGHT??

Not that I have any money in the bank, by the way. Aren't we missing out on AAA quality demos for June. I know June is on Wednesday, just saying.

If there had never been a Disney version of this story, I doubt that it would have ever been considered a children's story. And anyone who complains that the game is too violent for their kids are, once again, idiotic for buying it for them.
