Splinter Cell 6 May Return Series To Its Stealth Roots

Okay, so the image is gone but at least it proves they're working hard on the new Splinter Cell .

Plus, the leaked image in question showed that protagonist Sam Fisher will be reunited with his trusty night vision goggles, which mysteriously disappeared in the last entry, Splinter Cell: Conviction . The game is currently in development at Ubisoft Toronto, headed up by original Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond, and the absent image also had the words "Broken Arrow" and the letters "SC6." The former hints at lost nuclear weapons (you may recall the movie with John Travolta and Christian Slater). Those goggles are important by themselves because it may prove the series will return to its stealth roots; Conviction sort of left that behind with a more action-oriented adventure that didn't go over well with some critics and hardcore fans.

For the record, I count myself among those hardcore fans, and I was appalled at Conviction . So listen up, Raymond and Co.: I haven't the slightest idea why Ubisoft decided to alienate all its fans with that game, but you had best return to the formula that originally earned you those fans. It's the only logical move, isn't it?

P.S. With the Splinter Cell Trilogy coming to the PlayStation 3, we'd like to assume Splinter Cell 6 is multiplatform.

Maybe it'll be a prequel to Sam's early days, because I'm not sure how they could move the story back to old style splinter cell with the ending of conviction, but who knows?

@kiryu
I like jak and daxter so I'm not allowed to play xbox…? I like gaming regardless of the system, ps3 is my preference because it truly is better but that doesn't mean I won't use another system.

Sam eventually gets goggles later in Conviction. Pretty sweet ones, too.

Anyway, I'm hoping for the next one to be great.

I occasionally wear goggles on my head just because they are cool 🙂

No Ben I don't wear night vision goggles 😉

Yeah, Ben I think you're right. They were like everything goggles, or something. They picked up on like sounds, thermal, and night vision all in one setting. At least it seems I remember them that way. They were intense.

World, N4G? I just posted my editorial to the TR blogger. I don't know about the N4G side of things yet.

This is just another in a long line of games that has been ruined by all the 'twitch', I need action now gamers.

When are these developers gonna get it through their heads that not everyone wants to mash buttons constantly. Bring back the good old days where you actually had to think while playing a game.

These games now are so moronic and repetitive that a 6 year old can run through them. Uncharted is an exception as is Crysis 2. Those games actually require some brain use to beat. That is what I like.

Oh, come on now. That's an extremely large swath you're cutting right there.

Yes, he is cutting through a very large swath, mostly because a very large swath of people are settling for mediocrity year after year. CoD is evidence of that.

It would be weird for the series to continue after missing a release on a Playstation console. But you have to admit that Conviction was probably tailored for 360 fans.

World,

Ha, funny you should say that.

Since my phat princess was murdered, Conviction is all I've been playing lately on my bot box.

Well actually a month sentence of Conviction, & about an arm's length of Too Human too.

If the story is less confusing and messed up than Conviction, and the gameplay allows for more stealth options ALONG with action options (like Deus Ex or MGS4) then I'd be pretty happy with that.

That old guy telling the story in Conviction is a terrible story-teller. He makes things sound far more complicated than they really are. Thank God he's not a primary school teacher.

Only thing I liked about Conviction was the easier control scheme. Much easier to pick up and play than prior Splinter Cells, even if it did remove too many stealth elements.

Definitely gonna get the Splinter Cell Collection. But will Chaos Theory have 2 player splitscreen like the PS2 version? I heard they're using the PC version, so it might remove split-screen which is a real shame, as my friend and I spent hours trying to get through some of the tricky stages.

One of my all time favorite series and the ones that lured me to the PS2. I was bummed that conviction didn't make to the PS3 (but, guess, based on the reviews, I should be happy I didn't waste 60.00). So, here's hoping that SC6 makes it way onto the PS3 and that M$ doesn't manage to hi-jack this title as well.

Conviction was great until the very end when it turned into a straight shooter. The predatory animalistic movements of Sam Fisher were very empowering , especially, when the enemies were actively searching for you. I hope Ubi doesn't take a great core and dismantle it because of gamers doing the new favorite pastime: Whining. See: Prince of Persia 2008.

Don't forget the 70's flashback level, with the crappy unconvincing stealth, and the shooting gallery finale. *shudders* Sam what have you become?

That wasn't Sam in the 70's. Or do you mean the tutorial?

Nah not the tutorial. It was like level 4, it had you walking around in daylight in some middle eastern setting. I walked and moved like Sam, but because you mentioned it, i seem to remember being someone else, or something. And some dude (Sam?) saves me at the end before the poopy shooting gallery starts. But one way or another, the ebb and flow of Conviction was different than prior outings. In this version they should've just given Sam adamantium claws and called it Tom Clancy's: wolverine =p
EDIT: well wait wolverine doesn't use guns… Okay they should've just called it "TC's Identity Crisis: living in a shooting man's world"

There, much better

The whole thing was junk and a huge slap in the face to all those who love the series for what it was: STEALTH.

Lairfan

Whining like Mrs. blank line does is bad whining that is sure as hell plagueing the gaming population right now.

Complaints about Splinter Cell: Conviction, however, are well-warranted. If a series is about stealth, keep it about stealth. If you want to add some action elements, go ahead and do so, but don't destroy your core element of stealth. Conviction pretty much completely did away with its core element and tried too hard to be a game it wasn't, aka an action game.

Just because you like the game, PorkChop, doesn't mean complaints about it are not well-warranted. And if Ubisoft takes your beloved and supposedly "great core" of Conviction out, all they'd have to do is put the old core of stealth back in. That was an excellent core, one Ubisoft threw out when making Conviction. And like you said, they shouldn't throw out good cores just because of a few "whiners" (in this case, the action twitchy gamers). If you liked Conviction's core, you'd probably die if you saw a real SC game's core.

Stealth splinter cell game = good.

3rd person splinter cell = meh.

Go back to stealth, put it on ps3 and I'm a happy camper and I'm a buyer.

so they get us hooked with a solid game, then as time goes on they change it, then, just when everyone starts to hate it, they change it back to what it once was.

Genius.

Pretty much like Coca Cola

:O I'd forgotten about the SC collection… Okay, have to add that to my purchase list for this year. But I swear that's the only one. I think.

As far as I'm concerned, any movement away from the instant action craze that seems to dominate gaming is a good thing. Perhaps Ubisoft knew that Conviction would appeal to Xbox gamers, and so tailored it that way in order to gain fans, only to bring a genuine series entry multiplatform. That way, they've got the Xbox contingent fooled and the PS3 contingent happy. Maybe I'm too much of a conspiracy theorist.
Peace.

I thought you didn't like Stealth? Why else would you complain about the inclusion of it in AC? GAH!

___________
___________

i love stealth as long its in the right context.
if your going to have stealth you need to have a closed area, and heaps of obstacles for you to hide in.
ACB is the complete opposite, its a open world game and there is not a single square millimeter where you can go where a guard cant see you.
thats why i hated stealth in brotherhood.
could you imagine how frustrating conviction would be if you could not hide anywhere?
no hanging out windows.
no slipping underground.
no slipping above ground.
your forced to stay within peoples sight.
thats why i hated ACBs stealth, the mission where you destroy leonardos first machiene.
the ONLY place you can go where guards cant see you is over the clif, but twice you have to climb over the wall onto the roof where at least 2 guards can see you.
your forced to kill guards so they cant see you, thats not stealth!
a stealth game lets you slip in, kill no one, and leave without anyone ever knowing your there, leaving no trace.
if you have to kill guards, then thats hardly leaving no trace!

There are Different forms of stealth. 😉

Lairfan
Lairfan

You cannot possibly be that stupid Mrs. blank line. You're an Assassin for a reason. And like Clamedeus says, there are different forms of stealth.

Also, you say that you can't hide in the AC games, yet I call BS on that. Its pretty obvious to me that you can hide in AC games, because I've hidden around the corners of buildings, I've hidden whilst hanging off the sides of buildings, and don't forget the ever-present haybales. Its not as complex as other games, but its certainly not as bad as you're trying to make it out to be. Truly the only way you're "forced" to be in all the guards' lines of sight is if you're being an idiot running across rooftops without a care in the world.

Also, AC2 had the same kind of stealth that Brotherhood had, so I don't see how you can only hate AC:B's stealth. But whatever, you've proven yourself to be an idiotic and hateful hypocrite before. Why stop now, right?
