Splash Damage's Brink arrives next week, and we still say it's one of the most overlooked games of 2011 (leading up to its launch, anyway).
Whether or not it deserved to be overlooked remains to be seen, but we have high hopes and the developers are clearly satisfied with their work. Studio CEO Paul Wedgwood told CVG (via GamerXperience ) that regardless of the outcome, they're "totally happy." He clarified that they don't want to make "movie tie-in games" but rather, something that requires "a whole bunch of risks." In a bit of comedy, Wedgwood referred to those movie tie-in projects as "quick cash-ins" that don't really work in the long run:
"…we never really understand why people do that stuff. I understand that it can be profitable but we haven't yet seen a company that's turned that into a kind of sustainable business that's been really good for them. The fact is that the most successful games companies are generally the ones that make the highest quality AAA games."
Damn skippy. Of course, Wedgwood adds that it's immensely challenging for an independent studio to produce a AAA game, and it's even more challenging to make one "without selling your studio to a publisher." Finally, he confirms post-launch support in the form of upcoming DLC ("that's a big part of our plans") and as for future Splash Damage projects:
"We think that what we're doing should always be unique and different and that's it. I think if what we do is unique and different and compelling and AAA then I think we'll be happy."
Unique and AAA. …two words we all love to see together, but we so rarely do . Brink releases on May 10 in North America; we're hoping for a great product.
