Director Commentary For Bayonetta

We often hear directors talk about their games, but how many get super involved with their product after it's out the door?

Well, Platinum Games Hideki Kamiya is one such dedicated individual. After heading the team that produced Bayonetta last year, he has been playing his game and recording his time. You can watch some of it over at the studio's blog ; you can listen to Kamiya's commentary track "on the inspiration, creation, and intent" behind the critically acclaimed title. Everything's in full English, too, so feel free to watch it; there's some really great commentary, and it's especially interesting if you're a big action fan. It's true that PS3 owners sort of got hosed due to an inferior port by Sega, but for those of you who played the Xbox 360 version, you're well aware of this game's top-notch quality.

Thankfully, Platinum didn't make the same mistake twice; Vanquish was almost identical on the PS3 and 360, and it ruled on both.

I saw the Climax Edition going for $50 last time I was in JB Hi-Fi, and I was tempted to grab it, but then I remembered the word about the technical problems that dominated the game and thought better of it. Maybe when it goes cheaper.

With that out of the way, it's refreshing to see a developer go back over his own production a year after release. I'd like for this sort of thing to happen more often and for the devs to give their thoughts on the game in retrospect, as well as how well they think it's held up against other games since release. It'd be an interesting look at both the development process, and perhaps it could inspire them to do better. Or not.
Peace.

I'll have to watch this commentary. I must say Bayonetta was one of the most unlikely out of nowhere hits of last year. I didn't want to like it. I just didn't like Bayonetta's stylization and the overall vibe I was feeling from it impending it's release. But within a few levels, there was no denying how awesome it actually was. I'm excited for a sequel.

I'm also eager to play the 360 version of Bayonetta with a PS3 controller. What you say?
That's right. I ordered a Chinese PS3/PS2 to 360 controller adapter and it works like a charm. Now I can use my HRAP3 arcade stick and DS3 with any of my favorite 360 games.

Amazing, that's like having a pair of glasses that make every fat ugly woman a sexy lady.

I wanted to like Bayonaise, but it was just bad. It made me feel icky. I thought I was being too hard on it and tried playing it again (while the PSN was down so nobody would see me) to enjoy it for what it was and I just couldn't

Loved the music though.

That said, I still think Platinum is capable of something special. I haven't seen it yet, but I'd be willing to give Bayonetta 2 the benefit of the doubt and a chance.

While I loved the gameplay mechanics, character and level design, the cheesy Japanese pop music kinda ruined it for me, and the lousy voice acting and script made the decent story almost unbearable.

If those few issues are addressed with the sequel, I will most likely pick up the sequel Day 1!!

I never had a problem with the goofy OTT dialogue and pop, I thought the story was horribly put together and the level design was atrocious. The action was way too small on screen and there was no enemy diversity. Every battle was the same and the extra action scenes (flying on the missile) were poorly tacked on.

I love Bayonetta, simple as that. I will confess though, when the game was first announced & they showed off a geeky goth lass in cum leather attire sucking a lolipop & performing naughty poses i was cringing at the cheesiness of it all.

But when it was released i thought i'd give it a whirl, especially considering it was from the same man who gave us the original Devil May Cry.

After the first few chapters i was hooked, imo it has THE best & most stylish combat system around, the fact that a newbie can literally mash buttons at random only to have a massive heel stomp everything from the sky makes it instantly awesome to play. Don't let the whorish cover art sway you, this game is a masterpiece & it's true beauty lies within it's deep combat system.

It's good to see the main man enjoying his work. Now where is my freakin' sequel!?

would be cool to see him do this for vanquish.
that was a ok game, far too short, but a sh*t load better then this crap!

Just bought bayonetta last week. Might get more into in after im finished with Crysis2. I'm more concerned with a vanquish sequel rather than this though. It was a surprise hit and i've been lusting for more ever since. leg Boosters FTW!! 😀

I'd like to add that Bayonetta was specifically designed for the hardcore action purist, and basically nobody else.

It's for the person who would recognize the almost limitless combo and overall combat possibilities and ridiculous diversity (which is absolutely unmatched this generation), and focus on attempting to be as masterful as possible. That's why I never finished it. But I knew how silly unbelievable that stupid in-depth fighting mechanic was…I just couldn't do it very well.

so thats why the combat is so simplistic?
ninja gaiden or devil may cry are made for the hardcore, the games which require direct perfect timing instead of just mash square as fast as you can to win each battle!
IF it had the anal precision that ninja gaiden requires it could of been really cool!
but sadly it does not.

Bayonetta about simply mashing buttons? Nope.

Ben, some real good stuff happens during the final hour or so of Bayonetta. So if you ever make the time to finish it, I think it'll be worth your while. Even if it's just to see the crazy stuff happen.

Gotta say, personally, I loved the game ! I loved the cheesiness, i loved the combat system, I thoroughly adored the story and even though there were alot of haters I found this to be one of this gens hidden gems and really hope for a sequel. Just couldn't get enough of the wiccan wackiness

Bayonetta was pure awesome!!! Don't see why you would want to just hit square the whole time. The combo/fighting system is one of the deepest i've seen. Such a ridiculously fun game as well as Vanquish. They're both just so much fun. I'm looking forward to the brawler that they're working on. Should be interesting to say the least.
