Gearbox: “We Had To Bring DNF To The PlayStation 3”

Duke Nukem Forever is almost here – no more jokes, we swear – and Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford says it just had to be done.

As he states quite eloquently over at the PlayStation Blog , his team just couldn't let The Duke die. And in regards to Duke Nukem Forever coming to the PlayStation 3, Pitchford makes a good point:

"We had to bring Duke Nukem Forever to PlayStation 3. We had to. There was simply no other choice, especially since Duke has had more adventures on the original PlayStation – Duke Nukem 3D, Duke Nukem: Time to Kill, Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes – than any other console."

He goes on to explain that his team's mission is to "complete and deliver the game," and he claims the project "is the worthy sequel we all hoped it would be." It's also interesting to note that other studios have assisted with this production: Pitchford gives credit to Triptych Games, a studio created by former 3D Realms employees. The Gearbox CEO says Triptych "carried the torch and kept the game going in those dark months after the story broke that Duke Nukem Forever was dead." Furthermore, Piranha Games has helped with the multiplayer aspect, so they deserve a nod.

But here's the coolest part-

"I have estimated that 3D Realms invested between 3,500 and 4,500 man-months of effort into the game, a lot of which has been lost to the ages. Meanwhile, by the time Gearbox ships the game we’ll have put in another 2,500 man months of effort. I’ve never been involved with a project of this magnitude. By comparison, Borderlands, which is by no means a small game and involved the invention of an entirely new universe and new technologies to support crazy features like millions of guns, involved between 3,500 and 4,000 man-months of effort."

That's a lot of freakin' man-months. This is gonna be worth the wait, right Randy?

Gotta "love" bots.

We'll see what this game turns out like but I'm very skeptical of Duke at this time. Maybe a playable demo would change my mind?

I had a feeling it was him. That still doesn't answer what an actual man month is.

"Unit of work representing the productive effort of one person in a 4-week period."

It, basically, represents how much work can ONE person do in one month.

Note that emphasis here is on ONE, that's why the numbers are huge.

Duke Nukem Time to Kill was fun. Man I still remember that…

And the call he gives to Lara Croft on a pay phone! lol that was hilarious!

I'm kinda interested in this again just because of how big DN was in the ps1 era

DNF: The legend of gaming. It seriously doesn't matter how this turns out, it's been anticipated for so long that it'll be one of the highest selling games of the generation IMO. Here's hoping it beats CoD. (You know, I'm actually not sure if I'm serious on that comment or not… That scares me.)
Peace.

I dislike it when this game gets hate. I mean hate as in just slating it just because.
This game should be respected regardless of whether you enjoy it or not. It's history. Probably one of the biggest and most legendary things in gaming history.

This game represents an era. A golden era…an era that started it all. And Duke pushed things so far forward that it opened up the doors for so much today.

DNF is going to play like a golden era game mixed with something fresh. The details so far confirm it. Even Randy above is so respective of it and so confident in it that he just calls shots like no mans game ala "no more scripted 'just move forward and shoot soldier's' game that more or less plays itself, DNF shows us where today goes wrong" and that's exactly it and what DNF will do. School us.

Wow, you're really buying into all the devspeak aren't you? You do realize that devs like to hype up their games beforehand with hyperbole-filled details that cause people to get excited right? All the details you've mentioned about this game so far are just devspeak my friend.

Furthermore, yes the old games were great and revolutionary for their time, but that doesn't mean this is gonna be the greatest game ever. Btw, when you say this is gonna be a "golden era game" mixed with something "fresh," then go on to demean modern shooters for "playing themselves," it kinda sounds hypocritical tbh. How is this game gonna have fresh features in it if it plays like a golden era shooter, and how are you gonna like it if it has fresh gameplay features, seeing as how you hate new FPS gameplays so much?

Either way, I can't wait to see reviews of this game. I'm hoping they're not nostalgia-filled though, otherwise you're just going to comment on all the articles about DNF with "Duke is best game everrr!!!11" I also hope they don't have nostalgia because if they do, its gonna be obvious that the reviews are biased. In which case I'm gonna have to play the game myself, and I don't think I can do that for a while what with Infamous 2 releasing pretty much right before DNF.

I played the demo and got bored halfway.
Figured I'd finish it when I downloaded it at home ( not knowing I couldn't)
It seems like it would be a one or maybe two playthroigh as the jokes would be the same.
