What was initially revealed on Sega's Facebook page has now been officially announced.
Today, Sega America, Inc. and Sega Europe Ltd. have released details for Sonic Generations , the new title in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
In celebration of the blue streak's 20th anniversary, this will be the "definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new." Sonic the Hedgehog will be playable as both the classic 1991 character and the modern day hero. What this means is that Generations is placed across three different eras over the span of those 20 years: recognizable levels are rebuilt in HD and are "playable in both classic side-scrolling 2D, as well as modern 3D style."
Sonic will even have trademark abilities from the different eras; that includes the Spin Dash and Spin Attack from the old days and the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost from more recent times. Said David Corless, Sonic Global Brand Director:
"Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary. By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way."
Well, what do you think? Does Sega have a winner this time? …maybe I'll just play the entire game in the classic format. Sonic Generations should be ready to go for the holiday season this year.

Oooo! Sega look to have completely kicked Sonic back into action now. Sonic 4, Sonic Colours and now this and no doubt Sonic 4 Ep. 2…..don't call it a comeback.
…I been here for years.
This is a great idea, I commend them. Still haven't played Sonic 4 ep1. I hope this turns out to be a great game.
I'm done with Sonic, but that sounds like a winner to me.
Classic all the way baby 😉
If this game has knuckles in it, it will definately deserve a playthrough from me.
Sounds kinda cool though.
Hey, that's a cool idea. It certainly offers up gameplay diversity with the two styles, and maybe implementing a good 'classic' setup will inspire them to make the 'modern' setup better. Who knows, Sega may really be on the track to getting Sonic back to his former glory. Now… where's Valkyria Chronicles III?
Peace.
2d obviously.
This might actually be good.
Good idea Sega. Sonic is still the man.
Old levels made 3D… Sounds like the same exact idea I had ever since playing SA2 Battle for the GC way back when. I hope they execute well
Sonic needs less plot. But I do like the idea of classic levels in HD
Phat Sonic shouldn't never lose weight, just imagine a skinny Mario =S

Come on guys, Sonic Adventure was awesome, I have been waiting ever since SA2 for a new 3D sonic game.
we can all hope
I have just recently bought Sonic, Sonic 2, and Sonic 4 Ep1 off of the PSN, they are all awesome games.
My preference is towards the third dimension, but, obviously, playing both is optimal. Sonic Adventure is a classic that really blew everything else away in its time. Sonic: Unleashed was also a horribly underrated game; I personally found it quite gorgeous and fun.
Sounds awesome, looks awesome. I'll be looking forward to Sonic Generations and it's potential to bring in new fans to a great franchise.
oh lord!
sega, why must you consistently dig up sonics grave and spit on him?
leave the poor guy alone!
speaking of revivals my head just exploded!
