Final Fantasy V Headed To European PlayStation Store

Just about every Final Fantasy classic from the original PlayStation and Super Nintendo eras is on the PlayStation Store, ready for download.

But thus far, only Japanese gamers have received the rarer and somewhat less popular Final Fantasy V . The game initially never made it to the US, and first saw release in the Final Fantasy Anthology on the PS1, which included FFV and FFVI.

Now, as announced at the European Square-Enix Members site, the digital form of FFV is breaking Japanese boundaries. This version will feature full FMV cut-scenes and of course, that old-school combat with the ATB (Active Time Battle) system. Like other titles, it'll be playable on either your PS3 or PSP and the release date will come in due time. Considering the source, we assume this is only confirmed for Europe but we'd like to take a guess and predict FFV will come to the US Store at some point, too. If you missed out on the great RPGs of the golden age of gaming, there's no excuse for missing them now; many are readily available for download.

Personally, FFV is at the bottom of my list when it comes to the Final Fantasy franchise, but I may be in the minority on that.

Yes you are Ben, I consider FFV to be better than VI and VII.

Man, bring this to the PSN store and I'll buy it immediately.

Ben is definitely not in the minority on that one. A very good battle system and average to good story, but it is definitely not most people's favorite.

Yeah, Ben is actually in the majority. And it's understandable, since this title never really had an official release in the US until 1999. Before you had to play from a fan translated version. Butz.

Well, for me, I played it after FFT, and that archaic, terribly unbalanced early version of the Job system really chafed.

Plus, if I remember correctly, there was a random battle every two feet or something. First FF (or RPG, really) that really made me dislike random encounters.

I want them to bring all of these to the PSN. Is FFIV or FFVI on the PSN yet? Or FFIII? Anyway, good news, I loved all the old turn based FF games.

I would really love to see the old Gameboy FF:Legends games on the PSN or something.

Wow, sorry I just nostalgia-ed myself…

I have this on disc and have been playing it occasionally on my ps3. I love it, it's really awesome. Love the class system it has.

You know, you'd think that by now the fools still running SE would have figured out that the continued popularity of the older FF games indicates that there is a substantial number of gamers that prefer Turn Based games. In which case, where the heck are the *new* turn based games?

But then we'd lose the privilege of calling them fools. Or maybe they just think that people keep buying them for the nostalgia kicks, rather than any REAL interest in the battle system. The human mind is unfathomable.

Only Final Fantasy Game that I bought and never finished. Wasn't a big fan of that one, especially when Final Fantasy VI was in the same package.

FFVI is by far the best pre-ps1 FF. That huge jump in technology from VI to VII makes VII more popular for most people, but in regards to the technology available at their own time, FFVI makes an absolutely tremendously big impact on where the FF franchise was going to go. It allowed every character to have their own unique set of abilities, while allowing you train each of them in whatever form you wanted to.

Plus the story was so well rounded for a HUGE cast of characters. Plus the fact that the character Kefka was based on the philosophical writings of the philosopher Kafka…

(Seriously… read about it! It's basically the notion that what we label a "mad man" is actually the one person who has experienced or seen true enlightenment… that a "mad man" has benefited from a higher knowledge none of us can experience. It is that knowledge that drives him to behave in ways we cannot make sense of. In FFVI's case, Kefka's knowledge or experience of something beyond our experience was the ability to use magic and have a concrete experience with a power that was at the time, unimaginable!)

A well thought out story with tremendous artistic properties. If FFVI was presented with technology we are now capable of, it would be a near perfect scoring game. There really isn't an OBVIOUS main character. Some get more focus, but they all have interesting storylines, and it never gives the same character the focus over and over. I love how they truly examine the human condition from the bad guys to the good guys. They all have brokenness, and that's something we can all relate to.

EDIT: Also the music. Terra's Theme is one of Arnie Roth and Nobuo Uematsu's all time favorites.

I enjoyed V for the battle system. It's remarkably similar to FFT, minus the grids and 3D. I could take or leave the story. The best character was Galuf, and he didn't exactly have any "staying" power. *yuk yuk*

I really loved FFVI. In my opinion it's the best FF game ever, from a cast and story stand point.

Oh, yes.

This is technically the first Final Fantasy game I've played, but the immersion doesn't count since it was all in Japanese. Ordered the Anthology which included this & FFIV a year ago from Amazon. Only FFIV came through the door >=.

Damnit! Another must have classic game. I really need to move somewhere that I can get broadband, because this is killing me.
Peace.

This is so Bizzare, on the European store we only have 7,8 ands 9, and recently the PSP versions of 1 and 2, so now we're getting a ps3/psp working version of FF5 out of the blue… it's just confusing, Why just 5.Heck theough if they do this to all the 2d ff games to i'll be a very hapy chap.

Good question! 7, 8, and 9 didnt because they are "PS1 classics". So unless they call it an "anthology ps1 classic" it might!

cant understand sonys obsession with disney and RPGs!
there are so many better PS1 classics out there!
apocalypse, loony tunes series, RE series, AITD series, SH series, crash 2 on the EU store only US has it and crash bash.
especially the loony tunes series, would kill to see sheep raider and bugs and taz time busters on there!
few more spyro games would be nice too, and of course pandemonium and its sequel.

First off, this isn't a PS1 classic release.

Second, a few more Spiro? I'm pretty sure I have at least 3 already. And you complain that Sony likes disney but wish there were looney toons? Now you're just harping on preference.

LMAO, dude do your research before you post!
how embarrassing!
really?
could of swore FFV was a ps5 game!
its spyro not spiro, and last time i checked there not on the EU store.
looney tunes is WB not disney!
and the disney games were utter crap!
looney tunes were always fantastic games, especially sheep raider!
christ!

1) You are the last person to correct anyone on spelling, let alone grammar of any form.

2) PS5 does not exist (so stop harping on typos)

3) FF5 was NOT a PS1 release on its own. It was a part of Final Fantasy Anthology, but it is NOT a PS1 Classic to be released on PSN. Again, the FF5 release on PSN will NOT be released as a "PS1 classic" in the same way any official PS1 game does. I did my research. Don't you worry. (Although, talk about the pot calling the kettle black.)

4) I never said Looney Toons were apart of disney. I am quite well aware of it being a WB cartoon. My point is, why complain about one cartoon but be ok with others. That is my point on preference. I figured it was clear… Perhaps to most, but not all.

5) Sheep Raider was balls.

6) I do not feel embarrassed beyond the fact that I am giving you the time of day with a response.

Re-read my post properly. I stated nothing wrong besides the spelling of "Spyro". And you failed to actually respond to what I wrote.

Just remember, I can literally own your a$$ up and down the forums, and you have made it my mission to mock and chase you down. It should be quite apparent in the future when I receive many thumbs up to your countless downed ones.
