When Final Fantasy XIV launched, it featured a 30-day free trial period and suffered a whole lot of backlash.
That backlash is well documented so we won't go into details, but there are two things to remember before harshly judging the creators of this latest MMORPG: 1. they continue to work hard to fix the issues, and 2. they have yet to accept subscription fees. In speaking to Gamasutra , new producer Naoki Yoshida (he replaced Hiromichi Tanaka) explains why they haven't charged for playing the game; outside of the cost of purchase, of course:
"It was pretty much personally because I've been a player for so long. I wanted to make sure that I would only ask the player to pay for something [once the team had established a firm plan for improvements].
The reason we're doing this is we're showing the players, yes, it's still costing us a lot of money, and we're not getting that money back yet, but we're serious about making these changes. This is one of the ways that we can show players that we are serious and we are taking it seriously."
They're still not sure when the standard monthly charges will ensue, and Square-Enix continues to fund the project "100%." Now, this bit of news only applies to the PC version but here's the question that remains for PS3 owners: what will the game be like when it releases on Sony's machine? Will it be a whole new experience? Are you willing to take the chance…?
It's just very interesting to see how Square-Enix attacks this, and perhaps the PS3 version will be a progression gauge…
Related Game(s): Final Fantasy XIV
The game has gotten better since launch but it still needs work. FFXI is still the better of the two if you want to play a FF MMORPG, but FFXIV still has potential.
Nope, it's just way too big a risk. But I welcome this colossal failure of a game that is draining millions of dollars from Square Enix because at some point they will have to cash in their sure-fire money chip and make the next gen FFVII remake.
day one purchase for me hopefully they fix it.
They really messed up PC launch and they know it. They also know PS3 version is their one and only chance to bring this game back to life. I still can not believe some of design decisions they made for PC version at launch as well as lack of content. It went beyond rushed release. It was just bad decisions.
Last time I logged in, about a month ago, the game was much improved. So I do believe PS3 version will be much improved. Unfortunately, I like most people, lost interest already. I'm not sure If I'll ever go back. However I do respect they are really trying to improve the game.
In the meantime I decided to donate all my crysta points in account to their "Square Enix Crysta Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund" program. SE will convert crysta donations to cash equivalent and donate it to Japanese Red Cross.

Hope they fix it, I'm really putting my eye on this title when it comes out.
Maybe they delayed it to have one last shot of kissing up to M$? The game WAS supposedly golden at one point if I recall…
I don't think so. I believe they realize PS3 is their last chance for this game to be profitable. There is, probably, a bit of reputation concern here as well. While FFXIII was different, FFXIV was just bad game. It is their major title.
I'm pretty sure that M$ paid them to release the pc version early, which was part of the reason it wasn't ready.
@ Kraygen
Microsoft is notorious for rushing devs. Wouldn't be surprised.
i spennt 5 years with FFXI and so I know Ill be getting this when/if it ever comes out on ps3
FFV13 better be an RPG!
it is but its an action rpg
Well there is a right way to do action RPG's just like there is a right way to do RPGs and JRPGs. I don't think FF versus 13 should be shrugged off just yet. We all were told very early on that it would be an action JRPG so we have an idea of what to expect. This wasn't the case with FF13. Lets just hope that they can make a game that their fans aren't going to want to return within the same week that they purchased it.
I'm hoping that when this releases on ps3 that it will be amazing. I had a lot of high hopes for this game, but I still don't have a gaming pc yet, so am wanting to get the ps3 version. I will however be waiting for the reviews because it's a big investment, time and money wise.
Sony usually doesn't except crap from third party devs. Especially SE whom they've had a very long relationship with. Square Enix knows that they have to give Sony something top notch and the PC version as of now is anything but.
no, because the PC version is a heap of sh*t!
and i bet 50 bucks the ps3 version wont be much better!
$E are much happier selling out the series, then actually putting the love and care it deserves to nurse it back to its old ways.
one game i am seriously missing right now is the adventure games of the past!
what happened to digemon, the old games that set you as a hero and had you wondering the world, collecting items, meeting new enemies or friends, leveling up your character, fighting scary bosses?
NEIR is the closest thing i would call to a adventure game this gen, and that really makes me sad!
looks like we have a 3rd casualty this gen!
first it was side scrollers to go, then survival horror, and now adventure games!
oh what i would do to have the days of bionic commando, resident evil and digemon to come back!
pandemonium and oddworld too, 2 of my all time favorite series!
I think they released the game just to do it in the year that they said they would since they have a bad track record for doing what they said they'd do.
I'm better off with WCK2
Well, they better hurry it up before they are too deep in the whole…
I was looking forward to this game for my ps3 since my pc is a relic, but since the date got delayed from march to unknown, I've just lost complete intrest. Reading about the pc version has also made me very iffy about picking this up or not, I'm a long time FFXI player, so I know SE CAN make a good MMO.
Now ontop of my worries about the game's pc issues, I'd also be put off if they release this game for the ps3, and follow it up by asking for a subscription fee right away since the pc has had this for over 6 months free ( minus game price), I'd like to see them offer atleast 3 months free for ps3 launch, if not, I might just pass on this, fixed game or not.
But ofcourse this is IF SE puts this out for the PS3, which I'm not to sure about anymore.
It may have been out just under 8 months on the PC, but about half of that the time, the game has been pretty much unplayable except for those that force themselves through all the problems it's suffered. I try it from time to time to see the improvements, but I just don't have the patience to put up with all that for any prolonged period. Especially when there's other MMO's out there that are so much better than FFXIV is in it's current state.
