Valve: “We’re Not Done With Gordon Freeman’s Adventures”

Portal 2 is nigh, but what about the game that put Valve on the map? The title that typically lands on every Top 100 of All Time list ever made?

Ever since giving us the two Left 4 Dead productions and focusing on the Portal sequel, the fans have been wondering: will we ever see another Half-Life ? Well, sure…someday. During an AusGamers interview with marketing and PR boss Doug Lombardi, the common question received an answer:

"You will see it, yes. We are not done with Gordon Freeman’s adventures. I have nothing other than that to tell you today, but hang in there with us."

There were over six years between the first Half-Life and the second (1998 to 2004) but then again, this is 2011…so aren't we long overdue? Granted, we've received Episodes 1 and 2 for Half-Life 2 – and maybe Lombardi is referring to Episode 3 rather than a full new title – but the fans have been hoping for a Half-Life 3 announcement.

And now that Valve has landed on the PlayStation 3 bandwagon (by giving Sony's machine the "best version" of Portal 2 ), we'd all like to assume a new Freeman adventure would also be on the PS3. But you never know what might happen.

Regardless of how terrible of a port the orange box was. I loved playing it. But Rather than a new episode, I'd much rather have a half-life 3. Pretty good news I guess considering I've been wondering myself.

Yeah but they havnt even finished the Combine story yet…

As always EP2 left us with a cliffhanger.

They need to pump out episode 3 before they do Half Life 3.

Half Life 2 was a stand alone story, you didnt reallllly need too much knowledge of Half life to enjoy the game, if they pumped out HL3 to finish off the rest of the Combine story, then you would pretty much need to have played HL2 to know whats going on, and that is ALWAYS lame.

the less said about the ps3 version of the orange box the better. i know gabe appeared on sony's stage, but i still can't forget his detailed attacks against the ps3. he said the platform was so broken sony should just start over. his opinions carried a lot of weight, and seemed to help fuel the early anti-sony buzz. he kicked the platform hard when it was already down.

now things have changed, so hopefully we will see more valve love in the future. but man did that guy go after the ps3.

I really have no idea what everyone is talking about, I played the Orange Box PS3 and noticed no issues or differences from the 360 version. Regardless, this is great news. I have been waiting ages for Half Life 3 or episode 3. I grew up playing HL1 so this is welcomed news!

The most important thing is if Valve will update the incredibly aged Source engine, just introduce aiming down the iron sights and everything will be alright.

you are lucky. the ps3 version had some serious frame rate issues vs 360 version. i rented it to check it out, and half life 2 really stutters at times. it was just an inferior port.

I didn't think the frame rate drops were earth-shattering, but it was noticeable. And since I never played it on anything else, I can't compare it (which would probably make it APPEAR to be worse)

The majority of the time the game ran great, but I did notice it almost every time I threw a barrel and it exploded….you could feel time stand still for a second after that.

But for 5 games in there – it was worth it.

I personally had a horrible time with the port. Lots of stutters and all that fun jazz. The worst though was that my audio would be replaced with some god awful chirping noise and a constant rumble It would stay like that till I got to a loading area. Yes, I did check my wires and checked on other games.

However I did have fun, even if I was slightly let down by the expectations my PC friend gave me. I just hope they really update Source.

I never noticed any issues with the game, except for the fact that I couldn't get into them. By the time I got around to playing any of the half-life's, There were already better games on the market with better feel and control to them, so Half Life never did it for me.

Don't see myself investing in another installment of the series either…of course I said the same thing about Crysis 2 so we'll see.

what do you think of crysis 2? are you happy with it? i just got it, and have not even started yet. all the comments around here seem fairly positive. plus, it's the best looking console game to date. just kidding about that, but that's what cvg said according to the box.

lol, I don't mind it, although I did comment on the forums, that for some reason, while I'm playing it it has a Half-Life feel to it. I don't know why I think that but it does to me.

I'm enjoying it so far. I haven't gotten to far in yet but it's definitely worth it so far.

I have never played any of the half life games, as I don't have a computer that can play it, don't have a 360 and all I ever heard about the orange box collection was that it sucked on ps3.

So I don't know that it would matter to me either way.

If all you have is a PS3 and want to play these games then the PS3 version will be fine. It has some issues but it's completely playable past the point of enjoyable. Only do these issues glare at you, if you compare it.

Not sure how you're unable to play either HalfLife or HalfLife2 unless your computer was built before 1998.

well I didn't realize the first was that old, but the second one I wouldn't be able to play. All I have is a laptop and it just has an integrated graphics chip.

Ah, I see. Ya you should check out the original HalfLife. It's got an amazing storyline and graphics wise it hasn't aged well but I think you would enjoy seeing what all the fuss is about.

I have a laptop with a crappy Intel HD graphics chip as well. Runs HL2 just fine on high settings. How old is your computer?

I honestly didn't care that much for Half Life 2. I like a story with my games and this one just seemed to languish on and on with no particular direction or discernible story arc. It's as if all they were doing was coming up with ways to put the character into different environments.

I didn't see the greatness of HL personally.

FPS before HalfLife were pretty much void of storyline or interesting characters. HalfLife2 IMO is the greatest FPS ever released in regards to a SP experience.

Agreed. No other FPS series comes close as far as storyline goes.

By now they had better release HalfLife3. If it turns out to be Episode3 than it had better offer me more gameplay than Episodes 1 and 2 combined. Way too long of a wait, especially since I think they ruined TeamFortress2 and the Left4Dead series shouldn't have taken that much development time.

If it will be episode 3 with the HL2 engine and graphics I'll get it for PC, since all the HL games I played were on PC. But if it will be a new game with a new engine and my laptop won't run it I'll definitely buy it for my ps3. Anyways, Half-Life is great and I'm looking forward to another installment.

sorry gabe, but ive been hanging on for so long my arms have developed gangrene and have had to be amputated!
my god, this game makes DNF look good!
come on valve, for crying out loud you cant announce a game, then release 5 other games without saying boo about the previous game you announced!
wish another developer would step in and take over, just like DNF if we wait for valve to finish it were all going to be long gone by the time it releases!
my great gran kids will have great gran kids by the time this releases!

Now that Valve is on board with the PS3, what are the chances of them porting over the original HL. I would love to see that on PSN!
