Analysts are already predicting that Grand Theft Auto V will be another huge hit; Michael Pachter anticipates 20 million+ in the sales department. But since GTAIV, Call of Duty has solidified itself as the most popular video game series of the generation. Can GTAV really vault back to the top?
The question is, has the industry shifted? Have the tastes of the mainstream/casual gaming culture altered? There's little doubt that CoD will continue to dominate the multiplayer department and nowadays, that translates to overall domination of the market. While it's almost inevitable that GTAV will boast a fantastic campaign, few are thinking the multiplayer element will be capable of competing with Activision's blockbuster series. Furthermore, those who love the multiplayer shooters will quickly slap down the $60; to them, the game represents hundreds, perhaps thousands of hours of entertainment. No matter how long GTAV is, that can't compete.
Or are we overstating the popularity of multiplayer and understating the immense cache the very name "Grand Theft Auto" holds? Although we haven't seen a new GTA entry for nearly three years now, everybody is well aware of the power of name-brand recognition. And when it comes to GTA, few game franchises can attest to an equal level of widespread recognition. Also, let's not forget that many presume open-ended, freedom-based interactive experiences to be the future of this industry, and recent efforts like Red Dead Redemption and inFamous have proven spectacularly popular. Certainly, GTA vs. CoD is a clash of the titans and in this ever-changing game landscape, it's tough to pick an out-and-out winner. Heck, that's probably impossible.
Well, whatever happens, it'll be fun to watch.
Related Game(s): Grand Theft Auto
I think the industry has shifted, although GTA has and will always have a huge following I don't think it will be the top industry seller anymore.
I HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM AND NEED SOME ADVICE
My ps3 finally YLOD tonight and was wondering if there was anyway I could get my game saves off the HDD. Any help would be appreciated.
You need a repair, Gophermods.com does repairs. Sony does not repair your PS3,so you will lose all your saves if you use them. Sony will send you a refurbished PS3 and it will cost you 180 bucks.
GTA became popular in the PS2 era, where there's no multiplayer/online. GTA was the most popular single player game in PS2.
I doubt GTA can stand up to CoD sales. The controls for the multiplayers simple feel clumsy and sloppy for GTA and even Red Dead Redemption.
Well, although this is too late, shoulda used PS+ Cloud to save your stuff. Sorry bro.
Ya that was the first thing I thought about. I just bought a 2nd ps3 and was gonna sign up for it real soon.
just reflow your ps3 (check youtube how to) and then quickly save your savegames. who knows, you might even be able to save your ps3 completely (it's a temporary fix though…)
good luck
paste i got a story for ya…..
just the other day my thick lady ps3 with original 60ghd went out on me for the 5th time(ylod). i been repairing it since the 2nd time it ylod the 1st time it was repaired my uncle did it while we watched it on youtube.
i was doing the normal routine but this time things didnt go well….. when i connected back the blu ray drive its a strap that connects to the mother board for the ps3 to operate the programs games demos & vids(dont know the proper name for this strap). i broke the latch of that keeps this strap secure. when this happened my heart damn near stopped cause my uncle is a computer technician & he tol me if the latch breaks of im basically done. i sat there for atleast 2 hours tryna figure out ways to keep it secure but nothing worked. finally i got in a postion for the the ps3 light to show blue meaning the bluray was connected i thought it was resolved &…… it wasnt. i was only able to use the ps3 net all the other programs wouldnt work. man i sat there sad like a breakup with my Xz.
luckily…. my cuzo been spreading the word to foks that i can repair ps3s & his patna(friend) had a 60gig that had ylod but wasnt repaired for a long time. cuzo bought the ps3 my way but this ps3 had more then ylod the power supply would overheat in 15 mins……. so what did i do, i swapped my power supply in customer ps3 after fixing ylod…. its more to the story but im tryna keep it brief. i tried to transfer all my data from my ps3 to customer but cxause the other power supply wouldnt stay on more then 15 mins the transfer failed……
i have data on there all the way back from feb 2007 im talking music pics vidz & game saves, (i was level 34 in GT5 with a 79% status) that i found very important & now…. its all gone. suprisingly i was heated but as long as i got a 60 gig ps3…… man my technology entertainment field is legit.
nothing against the slims i like em but i would gladly pay 400-550 for a 60 or 80 gig with bckwrds comp with the extra slots for sd & etc. thats the story though…. i lost all my data but i stil got a runing 60g & im koo.
or you could download a program which lets you decrypt your HDD, copy your saves across to your computer, then pop them on a USB stick and copy them back.
though you have to be signed into the same PSN account otherwise they wont work.
just google ps3 HDD dycrypter and it should show up.
Hope they Talk first about Agent the PS3 Exclusive Rockstar Game!
If Agent is Excellent and uses the PS3's Capabilities then i don't care about GTA5!
I doubt that will happen. Judging from Rockstar's programming, the PS3 counterparts always have a blur to it. I gurantee the Agent will make it's way to the Xbox eventually. They probably programmed the XBox version but release that game later, like they did with Mass Effect 2 for PS3.
I would also prefer that Agent comes first. GTV would only delay its release. I want both of course but who isn't hungry for new IPS?
@godsman
Rockstar is not bioware and now no other big Dev is using 360 as lead dev platform look at Assassin's Creed and Batman they r using PS3 as their lead dev Platform and Rockstar picked Agent as a PS3 Exclusive cause they know it's true potential.
Complete agree and same here.
Popularity, yes.
Sales, not in a million years.
And like Kiryu said, we need info on Agent first!!!
Going to have to agree with everyone else, GTA will still be popular, but it won't sell as well as COD…unfortunately.. The market has shifted, GTA is a long game, so unless they turn it into a short campaigned game with more focus on online and make it an FPS and call it Call of Grand Theft…It won't sell as much.
Don't get me wrong it will still sell lots, just not what COD has done. But I would love to see it.
Let's hope that never happens.
It won't be fun to watch how a twitchy franchise owns a really great franchise with a great legacy. How I hate COD.

Why does it need too? lol No game will top COD, sales wise anyway.
if you like to mindlessly shoot people and respawn and do it again over and over for hours and hours just for a care package then, sure why not…
if you like an open world game that has endless things you can do, like rob, sex, steal, fly planes, drive cars, all without licenses..lol and that's just a few things… then NO!
this depends on how much people, will choose a fps, over an other, im so friggin tired of fps games except for kz2, and i do mean kz2 and resistance 2
GTA or basically any other game in that matter HAS to top CoD sells, for a better gaming future.
Let us' pray…
Gamers don't buy GTA for multiplayer and gamers don't buy CoD for single player. For a single player game, GTA is selling A LOT.
I don't think there's enough twitching good times in GTA for the enabler generation these days, so COD will unfortunately keep it's crown for a while.
But seeing how I put 130+ hours into GTA4 so far, GTA5 will certainly be a "must buy" for me!!!

You and me both, I had such a good time cruising around Liberty City, and the detail was astonishing, if they can fix the high speed rendering when driving and the pixelation of backgrounds, the game will be perfect!!!
If GTV could somehow provide the same sense of satisfaction, competition and community of COD that everyone is addicted to then it may compete on a sales level.
GTV would not only need to win over die hard COD fans but also keep them. Not to mention attract additional players as well if it is to surpass it. No matter what anyone thinks of the franchise it is a MACHINE! It will take quite an effort to topple it and it will most likely take a couple of entries. I seriously doubt that this can happen with one game. It would need to be a perfect gaming experience to accomplish that feat.
The game doesn't sell itself either. Activision makes damn sure that these things sell. RockStar needs to come in full blast. Deliver that superior quality with the hook that pulls people in. RockStar is one of the few developers with enough mass appeal to pull it off.

yeah, gotta agree with everyone else. times have changed a lot. the multiplayer drives cod sales to its insane numbers. it'll be tough to knock cod out of the top spot.
as i predicted 2 days ago, another cod article on psx.
You're starting to sound a lot like ______. Always pessimistic and complaining.
@jmo indy
how is my post above complaining? i can express my views. i don't think it can knock off cod. get over it. oh, if you were referring to my my cod psx jab, it was a joke. a poor one at that.
Last edited by Excelsior1 on 3/28/2011 11:42:30 PM
in defense of blank line, sometimes i think he adds things to the discusion if you read betwwen the lines in his rants. that's something i've never done, and i'm not always pessemistic,
i've tried to be a good member here, and see no need for your personel attack. i have not always agreed with some your posts, but i would not question your right to express opinions
in the future if you don't like what i'm saying in a post how about you address it there instead of your blanket dig. peace.

Yes it was about the COD jab, I dont like COD as much as the next guy and I'm tired of seeing it too, but ben puts a lot of hard work in these articles and we should at least give him that, I full heartedly support open opinions but repetitiveness in anything annoys me so i apologize. Truce? been enough arguing the past week.
no problem. truce. i know what you mean by repiitiveness being annoying. that's knd what i meant with my poor cod jab. i still kind of think it's too much cod, but at least it gets a good thread going. the articles are great, and i guess it's popularity warrants the coverage. peace.
Well I'm usually in the minority and so I rarely worry about what the majority will do. As long as there are those devs out there that continue to make great games that I love, the Cods and GTA's can do what they will.
I for one want some Infamous 2, White Knight 2, and Dark Souls. That's my minority feast right there.
i know what you mean. all of those games are higher on my radar than any cod game could ever be.
as for gta, at least they don't milk it, and churn out title after title.
That is true, they actually work to try and make the next better than the last. Cod has not changed in the last few releases.
Thumbs up for White knight 2, and inFamous 2 dude.
I think it is a possibility. Most of the CoD nuts I know used to play GTA 4 a obscene amount. Maybe a new one will make them want to put down the game and play.
Then again that was a while ago. As for me, I will probably not buy it. There is something about R* games I can not stand.
Rating does not really affect me unless there is sex involved. Like that part in God Of War 3. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against it but it is like..WHA!?

I really believe that COD will be replaced by another shooter, and I dare predict that this will happen rather soon, within the next couple of years or so… COD is definitely lagging behind now, and they got an ocean of hungry developers breathing down their neck, willing to do just about anything to take their place. And they deliver good stuff.
GTA however, will continue to be GTA. They've been so for more than a decade already. Noone has been able to deliver any threat to the king of open world gaming so far. And the world can handle more than one premium open world game. So unless Rockstar seriously screw up bigtime, GTA will continue to float steadily.
But it looks like many of you think that gamers are either single player gamers OR only play online games. I disagree with that. It may be a generation thing, or a platform thing even, being that online gaming still is rather new on consoles. But in the longer run I believe most will be both online and solo players, ergo buy both gta AND [insert cod replacement title here].
At least I know that I will… 🙂

i'm not so sure about that. it will take a really bad game to pry those cod lovers away. my friends constantly hound me about getting an xbox, and cod so i can play with them. peer pressure can be a nasty thing.
i, however, will not compromise my principles. listen, i think cod is a decent game, but does it really warrant the constant coverage, and those insane sales? i think kz3 blows it away, but somehow kz3 is barely a blip on the sales chart. if you are a fps fan, or a lover of great graphics you need to pick up kz3 guys.
I'm not so sure they are that loyal, really. I look at cod more like a current trend. And trends shift. There was a time "everybody" was on myspace too, or used Alta Vista to search the internet.
Cod has some good multiplayer game mechanics, that's what made them big. There's something in there for most online gamers of this kind. But that was then. They *should* have brought more new innovations and tweaks with Black Ops. They mostly added some stuff, the basics were the same. I think for example the dogtag-feature in Crysis 2 is pure genious. That's a sign of a developer who has put his mind into the fine details of the game and come up with simple, but darn clever solutions. And who knows what the next Battlefield will contain, they seem really motivated to take over the throne after the reception Bad Company got.
We shall see, my friend. Time will tell.
But if this was a poker game I'd quite possibly go all in by now. 😉
(I'm a bad poker player, though)

Beamboom,
I thought Ben "kicked you out"?
I had a moment of regrettable stupidity last week, and of witch I have apologized to Ben. If there was a possibility to send a PM here I'd also send an apology to the ones I posted stupid remarks to.
I had a shitty week last week, but that's really not an excuse. All I can say to y'all is; Sorry!

me want agent plz
depends.
IF they go back to the good old days of san andreas and vice city where you could do whatever you wanted for the fun of it.
then yea, no problem its almost guaranteed GTAV will break sales records!
if they stick to GTAIV though and say ohhhhhh noooooooooo you cant do that, its far too unrealistic!
and force you to do taxi driver missions for half the game!
then no, it wont.
i dunno about everyone else, but i find driving people around for hours on end quite boring!
if i wanted to do that, id go get my taxi license because at least with that id be getting paid!
I'm *extremely* curious about what the next gta will be like. more so than ever before. Cause GTAIV did something that no earlier gta has done: It caused a major split amongst the gta fans. And if only the part who did like gtaIV bought the next one, it would be a *huge* catastrophy for Rockstar. We all know that won't happen of course, but Rockstar got to be aware of this split, however will they act on it? Or are they *too* confident in themselves to bother, and keep going in the direction they took with gtaiv?
I still got faith in Rockstar, especially after Red Dead. But it will be darn exciting to get to know the next gta.
Last edited by Beamboom on 3/29/2011 2:51:21 AM
that split pretty much forces them to dial up the fun meter imo. i think gta4 may have had a somewhat negative impact on the franchise. i have heard a lot of similar sentiments to blank lines. it will be interesting to see where they go with it.
I definitely think so too. What really boggles my mind though, is why every single review were so praising of gtaiv? I don't think I've seen any other game where the review score is so out of tune with the general opinion.
I'm not saying that no-one likes GtaIV, there are plenty who do, but there are also a huge group who got disappointed. Somehow this is not reflected in the reviews at all… Strange.
it scored so high because it was the first game to really show what next gen systems can do!
it was such a good looking title, not for its time but even by todays standards!
that confirms why i dont listen to reviews anymore, because all reviewers are interested in these days are graphics!
a game could play like sh*t, have so many bugs, but as long as it looks pretty it will score well!
cough GTAIV, cough assassins creed brotherhood!
as for the split, will they change?
i seriously doubt it!
they may of split there fans, but the fact of the matter remains it is still one of the industries best selling games!
if it flopped and sold only 4M units then it would be a hard choice to make, but it sold extremely well so i cant see them going back to the old ways.
exactly what i was saying the other day, what happened to games just doing things because its fun?
JC2 is one of the buggiest, most repetitive, most poorly put together games i have ever played!
but do i care?
NOPE!
why?
because its one of the very few games out there that says oh f*ck it, i know this is unrealistic but lets do it anyway because its fun!
only if more games would be like that!
i wish GTAV could be set in vice city, but with the populated detailed city like liberty city.
keep the tech, keep the amazing graphics.
but bring back all the cheats, bring back the massive jumps, bring back the dual wielding, and weapon customization, bring back car customization, bring back purchasing fronts, bring back the turf wars from san andreas, bring back the quirky WTF missions GTA has been famous for!
GTA has always been known for having the quirkiest, coolest most WTF levels in gaming history!
WTF happened to those in GTAIV?
O, and bring back the vigilanty missions from previous games!
was so much fun driving around town in a tank taking lawbreakers out!
O, and bring back the fights with the cops!
in san andreas, vice city i would spend hours shooting at the cops, running away was so much fun screwing with them!
in GTAIV you cant because if you try to run away from them in your car you die in like 2 seconds!
last even shorter in a firefight!
one game i REALLY wish we could get a sequel to is scarface.
first game i got when i bought my wii last year was that.
reminded me why its one of my favorite games of all time!
was so much fun doing all the deals to get the drugs, then transporting them back to my warehouse, then distributing them to my fronts and defending the ones under attack.
even the missions were so much fun, and the weapons were so crazy!
tis why i say games have gone downhill so much this gen!
games on the ps1 and ps2 were so much fun!
games these days, just are not!
funnest open world game i have played has to be just cause 2, but that does not hold a candle to any of the GTA games, or even scarface, or the getaway, or even driver!
speaking of driver, what ever happened to the sequel san francisco?
hope it has not been canned, it was looking so good!
was so pissed when i found out true crime got delayed, that was looking really good too!
please, dont tell me ubisoft has canned driver!
Maybe I missed something but where's the split with GTAIV and how did it disappoint some? I personally thought it was better then the previous ones. I didn't see anything that you couldn't do in the previous ones. Just want to know b/c I was unaware of the "split" you guys are talking about
That's the split right there, slugga_status! 🙂
Me and a few others around here are of a totally different opinion regarding GtaIV. That's the nature of that beast. Some share your opinion, others share our opinion. And both "sides" are plentiful, and almost noone are somewhere between. A real split!
well, many feel the dialed up realism kind of messed with the fun factor. just check out the review on this site, and you will see the split. many gta fans claim san andreas was the best game in the series.
