Tomb Raider Films Will Return In 2013

Crystal Dynamics is currently in the process of rebooting the iconic franchise in the video game world; perhaps it only makes sense to see a film reboot.

GK Films has acquired the film rights to "Tomb Raider" and will issue another entry in the long-running movie series in 2013. Produced by Graham King and Tim Headington, the upcoming films (there will be more than one, apparently) "will create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft." Remember, Crystal Dynamics and Square-Enix plan to provide fans with an origins story of sorts; the telling of Lara's beginnings as a legendary treasure hunter. In the past, superstar Angelina Jolie depicted Lara in the movies but as hot as Jolie remains, nobody beats the ticking clock and with a prequel/origins story on the way…well, we probably need a younger leading lady, right? And if they do announce that Jolie won't reprise her role, the rumors will start to fly: who will play Lara Croft in the reboot?

Jolie helped the "Tomb Raider" movies rake in $432 million at the box office. It may stand to reason that GK Films needs a star of equal drawing power…

I still haven't seen a TR movie. One reason for that is because game movies are usually a joke and I'm not a big fan of Angelina (nothing against her, just not a fan).

I did see some screen shots of the new TR HD collection coming to PS3. It looks like they've done a better than anticipated job with the ports. Cool thing. For some reason I enjoyed LEgends more than makes sense to me.

I haven't even seen the first round of films yet.

Am I missing much?

They weren't as bad as many believed they might be. They actually turned out ok. Of course, it's still depends on your taste in flicks. Jolie is pretty smokin'. And there's lots of action. It's the style of movie you would expect Tomb Raider to be, and for what it is, it's a pretty entertaining flick.

It's certainly no Forest Gump, if you know what I mean, but it's fun, none-the-less.

Like Underdog, I have to say they are much better than the critical reception would lead you to believe. regardless of Jolie, they are decent action adventure movies. Actually, in many ways they are better quality than schlock like Beastmaster or Conan, each of which has it's charm, but each of which is non-the-less quite poor in terms of production values. It's a movie based on an action adventure third person action/platformer. You get what you expect in many ways.

But Beast Master and Conan are classics and great for a laugh. Tomb Raider…not so much.

Beastmaster!? LOL! I like that movie, but come on, it's positively laughable at times. Hell, I start laughing from the first bar of the Battlestar Galactica theme used as the movie's theme music.

I'm not saying that the Tomb Raider movies are great, but as Underdogs says, they are pretty much what you expect – much like Beast master and Conan are.

Indeed. I can't watch either of those movies nowadays without laughing at how ridiculous they are. Sigh…good times. Haha

One of the things about the Lara Croft movies (at least the ones I've seen) is that no one decided that she was a crime family who were into antiques…if you get my drift. Could it be that not tampering too badly with the formula led to movies that were better received? Or was it just the power of Ms Jolie's assets? Who knows? Well, I personally am not that enamored with Jolie's assets, so I'm gonna go with the movies being alright, and not messing too much with the premise of the game – attractive adventurer finds antiquities and fights bad guys. Oh, wait that sounds like Uncharted, except for the gender change of course…not a bad thing in my mind. Actually, an excellent idea might be a Drake/Lara cross over game with the adventurers and their folks working together to save the world. I mean, why not? I'd definitely buy into that.

Agreed. She looks like a skeleton with boobs.

My wife made me watch one of these not so long ago. Those who thought these movies were "okay", watch them again. They're pretty terrible.

oh, of course they're terrible. Most action/adventures are! But for an action adventure, it's exactly what you'd expect. :p

I tried to think of something else besides Indiana Jones but it seems that is the only series I can think that's Acton/Adventure that's actually good. With the exception of the 4th movie. I try and pretend that movie doesn't exist.

Jolie has never floated my boat, but she seemed perfect for the role. The movies were ok, and will be nothing more then a rental for me.

one things for sure, who ever plays her, has to be english – lara croft is english, so should the actor – ive never heard an american pull off an english accent.

I think Brad Pitt did a decent job in "Snatch".
Leo DiCaprio does a pretty good job in "Blood Diamond".

But truthfully, there are a lot more going the other way. So many British actors with crazy good American accents.

Jawknee

Pitt's accent in Snatch wasn't British. It was gypsy. Considering I have never heard a real gypsy speak. I can't say if he did a good job or not.

DiCaprio was a Seth Efrican in Blood Diamond. Where'd you get the idea that was supposed to be British?

oh dear as pointed out
Bradd pitt was casted as the pikey, as he couldnt do an english accent.
And leo – was south african in blood diamond.

Oh I wasn't specifically referring to British accents… just British-esque accents (close enough).

Yeah, Brad Pitt was some Irish gypsy accent, and Leo's was Rhodesian (Southern Africa).
Still, they did pretty good jobs at their respective accents, I thought.

Jolie actually speaks in british accent in the TR movies.

Natalie Portman also speaks in british accent in "V for Vendetta"

My pick for a young Lara would be Camilla Belle (10,000 BC).
Although, a bigger money draw might be Emma Stone (Easy A) or Megan Fox.

However, I'm not sure any of the above could pull off a convincing British accent, though… lol

If they picked Megan Fox, that's a guarantee the movie would suck hardcore. The girl can't act and her mutant thumbs creep me out. eeesssh!

I have mutant thumbs! Seriously, the joint is interlocked and I can't bend them at the middle! Either one! lol My little sister used to call them "toe thumbs". AH well, whatever. Works well for volleyball, I guess… lol

I've never seen Fox's mutant thumbs, but having dated a girl who's main hand was a non-bendy one… it's really not bad! Not bad at all!

Haha, yeah, the thumbs distracted me in Transformers. I've heard that is a byproduct of sucking your thumb a lot growing up. Not sure if that theory holds water, but seems logical.

I'd never noticed the "mutant thumbs" thing until someone pointed them out to me. Is it something people really notice? lol

Kinda reminds me of the eyebrow thing that Nicole Kidman has. I never noticed until someone on TV mentioned it.

lol, well my thumbs were interlocked at birth, so unless I sucked on them while in the womb, I can't say it's true in my case. Suppose it could be true about other oral vaccuuming folks, though!

thanks for putting that image in my head….yuck.

the tomb raider flicks were pretty decent, actually. far better than those uwe bole crap films like alone in the dark, and bloodrayne.

The first movie I thought was decent, but the second one… Not so much. And Angelina Jolie holds no sway over me. I don't know who they could put in there, but I know damn sure who I wouldn't want to see.
Peace.

If you're a fan of 80's action flicks, then the previous tomb raider movies should be right up your alley. They are pretty much the same, but instead of Arnold, Dolph, or Jean-Claude, you get Angelina Jolie.

Personally, love action flicks for just some fun times, not serious good movie, just watch stuff blow up, relaxing. First Tomb Raider movie was definitely the best.

As for these new ones, I'd rather they pick someone who can handle their own stunts, can act, and has a chance of making it a top notch film, than just picking someone because they have a pretty face a big boobs.

Don't get me wrong, I'll probably watch it either way. 😉

Aren't Tomb Raider movies from the 90's? I don't know. There's something nostalgic about those 80's movies you listed. Tomb Raider…not so much.

The first Transformers movie, at the end when she's driving the tow truck with Bumblebee. She leans on the steering wheel. There is a clear close up shot of her mutant thumb. Ever since that moment, it's all I see now. hahaha

MyWorstNightmar

I have a problem. I look at thumbs, toes, veins in forhead (Julia Roberts), nostrils (Julia Roberts), how simetrical a face is (is one eye higher than the other eye, is one ear higher than the other ear), veins in the arms and hands (Jolie, Aninston, Madonna), nose leans to the left or right. Poor Owen Wilson!

I'm sick I tell you.

The TR franchise has never really been about thick plots and great story telling so if they've got their mitts on the property and want to reboot it with their own fresh ideas, I'll most likely see it.

As for Angelina, well she certainly fit the bill in the old ones, but yeah, let's see some new honey take the role to new heights.

I enjoyed the 2 Tombraider movies plus I like Angelina Jolie too so for me it was a win win situation. I will more than likely watch the the new movies as well.
