Next GTA Is “Rush,” Contemporary Los Angeles Setting?

We're sort of hoping the next Grand Theft Auto goes international, but might GTAV return to a familiar region…?

Web-surfing sleuth Superannuation may have located some evidence concerning Rockstar's next entry in their most heralded franchise:

It began when the site dug up an actor's resume that featured a since-deleted mention of mo-cap work for "Grand Theft Auto V." Now, this came from a casting call involving an "interactive project" called "Rush," that supposedly refers to a "contemporary LA-set GTA game." The casting call began on December 6 and sought actors for motion capture and voice work for "8 additional principal characters" on that project. The personas they were seeking included an "annoying, wise-cracking, highly successful FBI agent" and a "Welsh monk, cult leader, yoga teacher" type. Then there's the "weed evangelist," "swinger, mellow California divorcee," and the "publicist for an actress known as America's newest sweetheart." Lastly, pro wrestler Robert Esparza Tweeted- "Got body scanned for my role in the video game "Rush," coming out on Rockstar Games."

So is that enough? Are we talking about GTA or something entirely different from Rockstar? It seems they may be leaving the idea of a period piece behind; Vice City and San Andreas were set in specific periods and places in American history (1980s Miami and 1990s LA/SF). But GTAIV was "contemporary" and set in Liberty City (i.e., New York), so maybe it is indeed time to return to the West Coast. What think you…?

Yeah it would be nice to do a foreign country but if they can remake Cali even better than GTA:SA then I'll still be pleased

Ditto Crazy as far as size, innovation, customization, soundtrack and all around G-sheet that was the best game of all time for it's time I do believe.

To be honest I really want Vice City again. I just loved the feel of Vice City. Just so memorable. San Andreas was the best gameplay wise, but feeling wise for me – Vice City was so awesome hands down.

But if we really want a new place to have crime in. Europe is ok, but I don't care much for it. Tokyo is already done by Ryu ga Gotoku so it's alright.

How ABOUT SINGAPORE FOR A CHANGE!?!

4 down, more to go. Logic dictates the Rockstar will not make GTAV in LA. Unless maybe they are doing a crossover with L.A.Noir. Which would be absolutely ridiculous. Or complete genius. Who knows what R* has up there sleeve.

I think it was NWA that told me LA was the gang capitol of the world. I'm sick of my 1-shot-kill cold-blooded gangbangin' killa characters getting dissed by lil punks in Rockstar games kno-wa-imsayin? Here's hoping this "annoying FBI agent" isn't going to stick his D in my mashed potatoes a la Frank Tenpenny. I can't wait to do fetch quests for some weed evangelist in the back country of LA for a jetpack…oh wait that was San Andreas too. Maybe they should try something else… how bout Hawaii – they have a bad drug problem right?

A Lite San Andreas? I but i'm with you Ben. I'll cast my vote for somewhere in Europe.

On a side note, if they do San Andreas again, I hope they bring back James Wood's character.

I preferred the San Andreas setting to Vice City, so this is welcoming news to me. Though I agree with the London idea. It makes me think of Guy Ritchie movies, and that setting would be great for a game.

Liberty City in GTAIV looked like New York. Some I'm guessing LA will look like LA in GTAV. Still…I'm not sure I want LA, no imagination at all. We're in 2011, imagination needs to take place.

How about "GTAV: The World" where you can play on the entire Earth. I was hoping for that. Although that might not happen in a very long while from now, haha.

I'm sure Rockstar will please its fans somehow with this next installment. =]

dont care!
no, seriously, i doubt will see this anytime soon because R* north are hard at work on agent.
not to mention were still waiting on max payne 3 and the rumored and definitely in production RDR2.
i want a GTAV more then the next guy, IF they do it right, but i doubt we will be seeing it anytime soon.
not to mention R* always do spin offs before a full increment.

They could have offloaded it to one of their other studios. And I don't imagine RDR(3) would release until at least a year after the next GTA. They're both solidified blockbuster series, so they can now rotate them over two, or even four years, to keep the formula of either burning out, as well as giving themselves more time to come up with new, entertaining mechanics and constantly engaging stories.
Peace.

another studio!?
they have no studios left!
plus, you cant announce LA Noire, max payne 3, agent, all but confirm RDR2, and then announce GTAV without releasing a single one of them!
plus GTA is one of the most popular series of all time, so announcing that would be so self destructive!
announce that, and watch the interest and hype for LA noire, max payne 3 and co sink faster then the titanic!
once all those games are out, then announce GTAV.
till then, theres no point, and i doubt 2K are that stupid!

Rockstar has nine studios all told, one for QA and one for Japanese localisation. Leeds and London do portable games. North is on Agent Vancouver is on Max Payne 3. San Diego did the MC series, as well as RDR, so they have to be working on the one of them, and I'd imagine New England is probably working on the other. Which leaves Toronto as the most likely choice for GTA: Rush, as they ported EfLC to PS3 and PC, as well as developing The Warriors.

No studios, honestly.
Peace.

i cant see north handing of there baby.
plus, you refuse to consider announcing GTAV now would completley destroy any hype 2K have created for any of their other games!
its like bombing your own building, why would they announce this and completley upstage their own games?
wait till there out, then announce GTAV.

Well, the characters certainly seem odd enough to be from a GTA game. Now, Rush could be a codename. Or, someone could have their wires crossed, and Rush could be the second R* PS3 exclusive that was rumoured.

Whatever it is, I hope that R* get their ar*** into gear after the release of L.A. Noire and start telling us about Agent. Feel free to announce this Rush alongside it and hype them both, just throw me a bone damnit! They must be working on more than just Max Payne 3 and Agent, and I want to know about them!

As for the setting, I hope it isn't L. Ehhhh… I just realised something! San Andreas was L.A., yeah? Well, using some slightly broken logic, does anyone else think that this may refer to GTA: San Andreas Stories for the NGP?

Whatever, I'd rather not see them go back to area that they've already done. Give us Washington or Detroit. Hell, why not Alaska or Texas? There are still plenty of places they could go in America, but I can't deny that I'd love to see London, Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane.
Peace.

Sounds iffy at best, I would personally vote no to it being in L.A.

My question though is, who is this Robert Esparza guy, I've never heard of him and he isn't known to wikipedia either.

As long as it's more fun than GTA IV, and has more trees and vistas to make for sweet sweet eye candy, I'm really not overly fussed where the next GTA is.

San Andreas had really nice countryside areas, a whole freakin' mountain, little country towns and 3 whole cities!!! AND the gameplay was deep and the story was long.

I hope Rockstar go the way of the previous gen GTAs, GTA III and IV being the simple design city with concentration on tech over content, but future entries (ala Vice City and San Andreas) taking those established mechanics and tech and simply adding gameplay content.

Going back to GTA III after playing San Andreas and Vice City was NOT a pleasant experience. I'm hoping the same goes with this next GTA. So much fun and so much content that GTA IV feels boring and lame next to it.

Again, location, don't really care. As long as it looks good and is fun to play in.

Yeah I didn't like GTA: London back then and wouldn't like it now. Sorry, I'm happy it's staying in an American setting, much more stuff to make fun of about society here. Love the humor. I have no beef with London, it's just that I don't want a Getaway game invading my GTA.

A Vice City reprisal is the only news which would get me hyped for GTA again. GTAIV remains my biggest disappointment in gaming.

NotGoofingAround: D in the mashed taters? that is fresh. Rack Em! truth be told i'll reiterate that although Rockstar's mockery of the american way was mad fresh in '99, it is not a trick they can return to in 2012. no matter where GTAV is set if they return to the same old 'lets all take a crap on the main character' routine their new game will go the same way of GTAIV: drink coaster. or dust collector. or 15 dollars credit at gamestop.

Obviously you didn't realize GTA4 put Rockstar on the map as one of the better Development studios out there. Oh and did I mention the game made buttloads of cash? Oh and did I mention that Red Dead Redemption was Game of the Year. Yeah all from the same guys that brought you GTA4.

I'd be quite interested in bringing the game back to London. I'm still ticked off at The Getaway being cancelled/postponed so GTA London would appease me a little but what I really want is an HD remake of GTA VC & GTA SA!

I'm not the hugest fan of re-treading the same territories over and over again in any game, but if there's one world that BEGS for a new take it's San Andreas. A spectacular game, an unbelievably deep and fun game world, but clearly pushing the PS2 further than it was comfortable going. You put the PS3 engine into that world — and keep in mind this will be the second GTA effort this generation, meaning Rockstar is surely primed to really push the hardware — and this could really be something special.

I'd play GTA in any city, and a London/Europe game would be fantastic. It would be nice to see Rockstar do a satire of a city/country that WASN'T America, too. But I won't complain at all if we get to go back to San Andreas.

i liked the add ons to gta4 way more than the actual game. they brought a lot of the fun back that seemed to be lacking in the main game. surely, r* has been working on the game engine to bring the graphics up to date.

overall, i'd have to say san andreas was the best game in the series so far. i trust r* to deliver no matter the setting.

i know it would be hard to pull off, but it would be cool if we could travel around the world with stops in say europe or tokyo.

I think L.A, as not much a departure as it is, could be a well placed GTA for today, considering the current climate of the reality era of entertainment and Americas troubles overall, it could sit well for GTA's satire.

I'd vote for one that involves the diamonds of africa (kind of like Far Cry 2 GTA…) or in Brazil? maybe? I think GTA needs to go global and draw in some new areas…
