In order to keep the shooter fans satisfied, the developer needs to continually offer fresh content. It seems to be a rule of the new generation.
And in retrospect, DICE believes they didn't correctly support last year's stellar title, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 . Now, Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach says they have "a lot of really interesting plans" to keep their new title relevant. In speaking to Game Informer , Bach had this to say on the subject:
"We have a big focus on sustaining the game. To be honest, Bad Company 2 was a bigger success than we anticipated. We did not account for that. We sold a lot of copies and don't feel bad about where we were, but looking back, we should have released more, bigger content earlier.
The challenge is to build a game, and then have more people coming on before the project is done to start building extra content because it takes a lot of time to get stuff out. Even if you're done with something it takes another one-to-two months to get it on the net so to speak. We've learned our lesson now, and have a lot of really interesting plans for how to keep the attention of the players. We can do better in that area."
The first piece of DLC for BC2 didn't release until three months after the game launched, but it seems clear DICE won't be repeating that mistake. Is it too much for us to hope that some of that bonus content will be single-player-related? Oh, I know…nobody cares.
Related Game(s): Battlefield 3
The problem with Bad Company 2's DLC isn't that there wasn't enough. It was way over priced for what you got. Onslaught was cool for about an hour but was not worth $9.99. The vietnam expansion was a bit better but still not worth the cost. They need to release better quality content for less money if they want me to buy DLC from them in the future.
Yeah, they clearly didn't plan ahead for it. But it seems like they have their act together now (hopefully).
Rock and Roll Jawknee! I was a BC2 beta player on day one and was so freakin excited for ANYTHING DLC related but was verrrry disappointed in it. They gave us 4 weapons that everyone already had except, oh my, its camo WOOHOO! I destroyed Onslaught quickly and although the addition of the old fave of Oasis was amazing it was only fun for about a week then I was back on the Harbor. Battlefield 3 is shaping up to be awesome so the DLC should be too! I'm still always gonna be a huge Dice fan!
Agreed. 🙂
I care about single player Ben, I care.
I'm one of the few that thought single player in BadCo 1 & 2 was awesome.
I thought the single player in Bad Company 2 was well done, but I was hoping for a little more length.
No. They clearly haven't learnt their lesson. That would be to put every little tiny bit of content that they could possibly put onto a disc, and actually give the players value for money, rather than trying to wheedle money from them through DLC. Yes, I'm bitter.
Peace.
I agree with that. Too an extent. I mean I'm ok with dlc but when I'm at the point I need new content. So say 3-4 months after release I could use some dlc. But all this month after release dlc needs to be on the disc.
I thought the maps on BFBC2, apart from a select few, were rubbish. They seemed bland in design; minus harbour, nelson, the one where you jump out of plane (long time since I last played), & laguna. The rest are just horrible. I literally dread playing them. No real DLC then is fine with me (even if I was VIP >:[ )
Oh and umn, I just published a level on LBP2 that I had worked on for 5 months in LBP1. Any of you guys wanna check it out? If you do, search my username and play the Calamity cavemen one. My head hutrs trying to fix all the bugs before I let it be played by anyone so tell me if theres any bugs.
BLEH all my thought have been took over with LBP now lol..(you need to fix a door you say? No problem, just place a microchip on it, place a timer on it then set it t…oh yeah, just get a hammer and nails works both ways I guess.) XD
LOL FPZ and DLC nonsense is always golden comedy to me.
I'd rather they just put enough content into the original release that I didn't need any dlc for 5-6 months.
Then I might actually purchase the dlc. Make the single player 20 hours of really good awesomeness and give 10 different mp modes with 20-25 maps, I'd be happy for 6 months easy.
But no, every fps is the same, 5-6 hours sp, 4-5 mp modes with less than 10 maps and most maps only playable on 1-2 modes.
Dlc never includes sp or even mp modes, just maps and they want too much money for me to play the same game in a different map.
This game looks so damn sharp the footage has to be fake, even makes ps3 exclusives look last gen.I know its prob pc footie but OMG!!!by the way KZ3 online is where it's at best shooter this gen.
"even makes ps3 exclusives look last gen"
Not quite. Look at the screen shots. By the way, the version EA has been showing off is the PC version. 🙂

aight, maybe not last gen, but does look a cut above. For now KZ3 the king Richard around here.
I thought the Dice supported BF2 pretty well. Its not a bad thing to have it released 2 or 3 months after the game, when dlc is release a month after a games release, its hard not to feel like it should have been on the disc from the get go, as others have pointed out.
The other problem with DLC maps for online shooters is that as soon as they release you fracture the online community; You have one group that buys it and another that doesn't and then you have the people that were originally online not playing in the new maps.

$9.99 for an unlock code always p*sses me off, and DICE was a great example of this with Onslaught and Vietnam. Hopefully they've done away with that crap, but it seems like they've replaced it with another evil: DLC announced before the game is released. Not as bad as the former, but it still annoys me.
Lair let's just say 90% of disc-based games from here on out will have DLC so prepare to be annoyed a lot 🙂 I have a problem with Bach saying that they didn't think BC2 would be as big a success than they anticipated. They had to be prepared for a contender against MW2 right? Wasn't that their eventual goal? Cheap excuse for lame DLC if ya ask me.
tis why DICE are my favorite developers!
only developers who actually give a f*ck about the PC community!
still pissed there not releasing mods for the game, but at least this time we get a proper PC game instead of the crappy PC ports we have had shoved at us for years!
tis why people say PC gaming is dying, because 1 we have to put up with crappy console ports, and 2 its just a pain in the a$$ getting the games to work!
bulletstorm for example, 3 drivers later and i still cant get the game to play in 3D.
someday Nvidia will learn how to organize themselves, and release profiles on release day not weeks later!
god, there almost as bad as sony!
i switched to console gaming many years ago because of install issues, drivers, gfx cards etc etc as many companies of the era put graphix over gameplay and accessability. now after playing through kz3's rushed and lazy excuse for a fps single player campaign i am afraid that hype and flash will trump character development and plot continuity. GG better iron out the kinks in multiplayer or the game will fall to the wayside when BF3 drops. what a broken product. wwwwhy, man, wwwwhy?!
I burned thru KZ3 co-op pretty quickly it ended up being a race at the end – run till you see red eyes so we can get this nightmare over kinda deal. Hate to say it, but the game is so disappointing I'm thinking of trading it in so I get max value for it and I NEVER trade back games 🙁 how many times did Rico and Sev tell the Cap that their orders were BS? At least 11 by my count. And that poor excuse for a cover system was used…hmmm never. How did we get on a KZ3 rant on a Dice DLC article? Sorry my mourning of KZ3 is taking over my thoughts…
okay nat, im glad im not the only person on the planet that is somewhat dissapointed in KZ3.. hate to say it.. never wanted to. and with this community being so into it, i was afraid to. but i havent even played it in several days because im frankly bored. they need some serious help to keep interest imho.
Now this puts the whole pre-release turmoil about the claimed "Killzone scandal" on this site into quite an interesting perspective.

I could've sworn there was another PSX article about this exact same subject some time ago. What's the difference in this one?
This article has those flashy "Quotation Marks" See, flashy right?
It's a new quote for sure, but the other one surely had "Quotation Marks" too lol.
Hi:
COME ON, Ben, not this Crap. I don't, REALLY don't understand why people support this kind of "strategy". Why someone important like you (honestly, for Me you are an important people in this business) don't realize that paid DLC (10 or less months after release date) is like steal.. why?
Red 5.
