Well, maybe they'll finally get their wish . During a speech at the Game Developer Conference, designer Yu Suzuki told the crowd that Sega "is going to let him make Shenmue III ." That was like dropping a bomb on the audience, certainly, but it seems nobody could get him to talk more about the subject. We've been hearing rumors about the possibility of another Shenmue for years, but nothing has come of all that speculation. However, Sega has indeed been interested in reviving old classics and although most return in digital format, this new installment in a beloved series might be exactly what they need. The original Shenmue on the Dreamcast generated very positive reviews and a huge fan following, and many assumed it would become the next big franchise for Sega. But it fizzled after the second offering and that was that.
Maybe now's the perfect time to bring it back. The only question is, does the name "Shenmue" still hold all the cache it did at the turn of the century? Would you be interested in a third effort?

I would definitely get it. They could release the first two in their Dreamcast games on PSN deal to remind folks and try to grab new fans. Provided the terrible voice acting didn't turn everyone off it could be cool.
I literally just said that to a friend..I want a third one..but also want one & two HD remakes..

good idea about bringing the first 2 to psn to build up awareness and buzz, however, i want shenmue3 to be a full budget commercial release. i take it that's what sega planning on.
I agree World, bring the first 2 back and then release Shenmue 3 later! Glad Sega is releasing revivals to the classic on the Dreamcast. That system was ahead of its time. I only need one more game and I'll be the happiest guy in the world: POWERSTONE 3!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Capcom, PLEASE…we waited 10 years for Marvel Vs Capcom 3..and now we NEED POWERSTONE 3….Or at least bring back the first 2 in HD!
Look to me like Kotaku is overstating themselves, but Suzuki said nothing about actually making a Shenmue III other than than the fact funding is a big hurdle in them making one:

Hehehe offtopic but kinda related, who played Yakuza of the End demo? is already on the JPSN.
Shooting mechanics are so so to me and it looks like is a parody of all the zombie games, I watched almost all the Left4Dead zombies in the demo and Sega isn't ashamed of it, they give them presentations ala Bayoneta when you encounter a new enemy xD.
Didn't like the combat but it was a fun demo.

I'll still be interested despite being angry with Sega over doing nothing about completing the story of Ryo Hazuki's quest to avenge his father's death at the hands of Lan Di. I like Shenmue.
I also thought it was a slap in the face to have Ryo in Sega's All-Star Racing because they knew there were people like me angry about leaving me hanging.
Hell, look at Duke Nukem. They are finally releasing the game after 14 years. 12 years waiting for Shenmue 3 isn't so bad, I guess.

Never played Shenmue, but given the general acclaim for it, I'd most certainly purchase a Classics HD compilation of the first two, and likely the third soon after. Sega have been good to me with Valkyria Chronicles, so I'm going to start being good to them. Definitely picking up Yakuza 4.

Cool. I never played Shenmue but my DreamCast owning friends loved it.

My thoughts on it can be read in the forum in the old school section.
If Yu makes it as before, and gets even more ambitious with it….then there it is. Segas greatest achievement gets what it deserves. Time MAY have caught up with Shenmue, people need to play them….two of the finest and most memorable game releases in history.

I wont get excited until i get a confrimation, but if we were to get Shenmue 3 plus 1 and 2 on the PSN i would be a very happy boy.

I'd love to see it. Especially considering Shenmue 2 had one of the biggest cliffhangers in gaming history. The only real reason I hold onto both of my Dreamcasts (yes, I have two) is because of Shenmue.
I just hope Sega does the series justice and releases a Shenmue 1 & 2 HD combo pack to bring gamers up to speed with an epic series that's been absent for far too long. I have to remind myself this is Sega we're talking about, so I really shouldn't hold my breath.

Loved shenmue 1 and 2.
They never finished the story, so they need to make a 3rd one. They should also make HD versions of 1 and 2. I havn't played 2 in english yet XD
Hell yeah!!! I still have fond memories of the Shenmue Dreamcast days & Shenmue II on the original Xbox.
Do it SEGA, get a third game happening & please for the love of god get VF5: Final Showdown out on consoles before this year is out.

Never played the 1st two but heard nothing but good things about them so if they do re-release them as an hd collection I'll pick those up along with the new one.

Great news. I've been waiting for that for years. But I want all the series so please SEGA make them in HD and I really hope they keep the original Japanese voice act with English subtitles 😀
I wonder if this might mean I'll be able to play the original in some way at some point. Never owned a dreamcast. Probably the only series that was worth owning one for.

This would definitely be one of the most anticipated game realeases ever. We have all been waiting too long for it. I had the 1st and 2nd ones on dreamcast and loved them. The 2nd I got was an import just so I could play it. That of course was before they released it on xbox but I had to have it.
Another game I would like to see a sequal to was Jade Empire…
