The PlayStation 3 is currently half the price it was when it first launched in 2006. However, it might be due for another cost cut…
With the Next Generation Portable and the Nintendo 3DS on the horizon, it might be possible to see the PS3 drop in price before the year is out. PS3 sales have been popping up at various retailers, including Amazon, and UK retailer Tesco appears to be selling the PS3 Slim for less than £200. And apparently, this isn't just a coincidence; it's all pointing towards a price drop: according to an unnamed source , Sony is preparing a "massive price drop on all the official slim PlayStation 3 SKUs when the 3DS releases." This same source said the NGP would have a price tag of £250 in the UK, which isn't out of the realm of possibility. This European source may or may not be correct but we wouldn't be surprised to see a $50 price drop when the holidays roll around again. And according to this, it might even go into effect sooner.
Many will claim the PS3 is quite a decent deal for $299 but then again, the lower the price, the more accessible it becomes.
If it does drop again I will definitely be upgrading to a slim. Some days I feel like my phat is about ready to expire.

That's a downgrade in my mind.
Agreed – the only upgrade for a PS3 is a 500GB HDD upgrade on a launch PS3 phat with Backwards compatibility.
Yeah, I miss my 60GB with backwards compatibility and 4 USB ports, too. Oh, well. Maybe I'll find a reputable seller online someday and get another one.

Well don't worry I would keep my phat. B/C doesn't really see that important to me with all the HD remakes coming.
Yea I get that feeling too… I think my Ps3 might expire soon from all those 24hr races in B spec im doing on GT5 🙂
Although my Ps3 has been on for more than 24hrs straight. All I can say is Playstation3 is a well manufactured piece of hardware. The death percentage is like none! Unless you try to mess it up, it wont die on you.

Well, at the moment I have 2 PS3's. My original phat model 60gigger with PS1 and PS2 backward compatibility (in hardware) and a newer phat Silver model. Both of my PS3's have had HDD upgrades. My 60gigger is now a 750gigger and my Silver 40gigger is now a 250gigger. I am not pining for space as it strands.
As World said, I think selling off my original phat model wouldn't be wise, however I may eBay off my Silver 40gigger and then buy a new SLIM model for everyday use.
My orginal phat PS3 is being kept at a lower firmware for Linux usage at the moment.

Mine's pretty close to that Sven, I put a 500 giggers in my fatty 80gig with software compatibility. It works with most PS2 games, sadly not Shadow Hearts II though. Good thing my PS2 is still alive n kickin.
My launch model died 🙁 still haven't buried her yet.
Is it just me, or does most people who frequent these boards have a launch model PS3 that's died. Or knows someone personally who has had one that died?
Seems like a lot.
I'm one of them.
Two 60gig launchers one upgraded to 250GB (used by my wife) and the other purchased already upgraded to 320GB, then I upgraded to 500GB (the 320GB drive is iffy). Got the second 60G with 320 upgrade through an Ebay reseller at least a year ago now, both launchers are going well.
We also have a 40GB system upgraded to 60GB in the house too – had to do something with that 60GB drive I upgraded. My son get's that one.
3 gamers, 3 PS3s, I love tax rebate season. 😉
I have the fat 80GB MGS4 edition, used every day for the last 2 1/2 years. Works like a charm. Has a WD 500GB hard drive as of early last year.
I'm looking to get a slim, but only because I want another blu ray player and there are a few games out which have these weird glitches that only affect random fat ps3's. For most people not a problem, there is an easy work around, but I have like Titanic bad luck and they always happen to me in a way I can't get around them. So I'll be playing those games on my slim once I get it.
Yeah, I have a phat 80GB upgraded to 500GB. I had a chance to buy a slim and chose the phat. I just can't shake the feeling that they skimped on the parts for the slim to cut costs. I am sure that isn't the case, just superstition. I will pick up a slim for $250 if it happens for a 2nd bluray player.
Got to say the phat PS3 is more attractive then the slim PS3. That's why I saved about 50 bucks before they started releasing the slim.

I'm looking to buy a slim and so now I may wait a little bit longer to find out when this supposed price drop would happen.
my fat original $700 ps3 with upgraded 500GB from the original 60GB is doing just fine so i shall hold on to it. just ain't feeling the slim version but good for those that are still on the fence. the more the merrier.
HA! I have the same setup! Nice!!!
That would be great
I would definitely pick up a new PSslim and the NGP if this happens. I love my phat PS3, but if Im not gonna have the media slots anymore… then i may as well have a Slim.
(It will be my 3rd PS3 by the way, my launch 60gig died on me about a year ago )': )
I just bought a slim yesterday for my Dad's bday, he's gonna be so surprised. Best Buy gives you a fifty dollar gift certificate with it so I used some of it to get him the Remote Control (He's old, the DS3 will probably scare him and he just needs to play movies) and the rest of the money on the card will help in conjunction with another card I have to cover the cost of Dragon Age II 🙂
Nice one World, let us know what your dad had to say once he unwraps his new toy… is he a keen gamer, or will he use it primarily to watch HD movies?
Would you ever play with him online or is he not that way inclined? Unfortunately my dad is nowhere near as accepting of new technologies as your dad… my father still does not use a computer nor mobile phone. He sticks to the old land line, has no internet access at home and has never sent an email in his life… he is well off the matrix.
To be honest though, as he is not connected at all, he has a very simple, stress free lifestyle and makes more money than me – he has nothing to waste it on but earns a ton of it…
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
I've tried to teach my Dad to play games but he can't handle it. Too much going on at once for him to keep up with. Which is too bad because he was in the military and reads tons of Vietnam books. If he could handle it he would be an avid military shooter fan. He'll be using it for Blu Ray and Netflix mostly. But I'll try to wow him with all the other features if I can. Without me I don't think he'd be able to work a computer or a cell phone either. He's 64, not decrepit or anything but technology isn't his strong suit.
Should give your dad a copy of Killzone 3 with the sharpshooter attachment, see if that gets him to relive the good ol days..lol
If I could get him to sit down and commit I know I could make a player out of him. Some people don't wanna put in the work.
Cool, my dad and I race on gt5. Its pretty awesomne
Hey World,
If you want to get your dad gung-ho interested then try this just as a starting point, so you've given him a reason that he feels he really needs it.
Case in point, at least you've got a great way to get him into the net itself, just show him how to eBay/Amazon/1/2 price dot com/etc for the Vietnam books, DVDs, & all other related memorabilia.
Myself, I've always looking for biographical/autobiographical books on the Vietnam, WWI, WWII, & Civil War & I've garnered a nice Vietnam(& other American wars & conflicts) book & movie collection…….& for some pretty cheap prices too.
Hell, I just picked up 11 old paperbacks that written by the the guys themselves who had fought over there, for only a $1 each.
Anyway…. your dad could wind up not only having a new great hobby that he was not only an actual participant in, but also becoming a mighty proud owner a hell of a historical collection too.
Good!! Not saying it's too expensive right now or anything, but the cheaper it gets, the better. My fat is making weird zip zip noises now. Like a zipper. My fat PS3, not my flabby fat.
Slightly off topic, but it's still related to saving money for those poster's above….
If any of you guys needs an extended 1, 2 ,3 year or longer warranty on your stuff, then just use "SquareTrade" for great warranties at super-fair prices. They'll also warranty items bought from almost anywhere.

BTW, if anyone needs any cables, including the newer 1.4 HDMI, Ethernet, etc, etc, in almost any length, then use "Monoprice, the best & most upgraded cables at the best price & fast UPS shipping too.
(Example: I just paid only $4.34 each for 6 different color-coded 10 foot long 1.4 HDMI cables, and only $3.15 each for six 30 foot matching color-coded Ethernet cables, and $4.90 each for six matching color coded 50 foot cables)

Oh yeah, the lady at Best Buy was all upset that I wouldn't buy the Geek Squad protection bullsh*t. I didn't want to argue with her, but I think I pissed her off when she mentioned her sons xbox and I just kind of went stupid and let this slip out: "Oh xbox is crap, Sony makes solid hardware, I've never had trouble with my PS3"
Woops, hehe.
Loool, what was the reaction on her face when you let slip that 🙂 What a photo opportunity!
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
Don't feel bad for telling the truth.
She looked a little flustered 🙂 I think she was hoping for a commission or a sticker or whatever they give the employees for forcing that crap on people who can't take care of their hardware or feel guilty 🙂
The only time I ever get in store warranties is when I am spending over a thousand on a TV or something. The peace of mind that my expensive TV will be covered for 4 or 5 years is worth an extra $100 to $200 bucks.
Best Buy is really sad, they are stealing people's money. They offer to install your operating system for $100 if you buy a pc from them, which is dumb, because the computer really does it for you now.
For $50 they will even update your ps3 for you when you buy it. They try to tell parents who don't know any better that it's really hard to update. So lame.
1 of the things like there overpriced HDMI cables at bestbuy they sell but I guess when people buy an expensive TV over there it probably doesn't matter.

I really needed the price drop before I got back to college… Now I can't even afford Games. I haven't even picked up Dead Space 2 yet and Killzone 3 is about to come out.
I don't know y people are still waiting to buy a ps3???
I have to get one for my apartment because my family claimed ownership over the one I bought last year.
@Veitsknight
so u do have a ps3 already right?
Yeah, it is at home at the moment. Gotta get one for my apartment.
i'm talking about people who don't have even one ps3.
I don't think that it needs a price drop. They just need do what Xbox did and bundle the console with two games, but instead of putting in the crappiest games possible like Microsoft did, Sony could put some of their fantastic exclusives in with the system.
Well Whether you're a fan of the original PS3's or the slims this is a moved that will definitely make the PS3 more attractive to those whom do not own one yet. If anything the slims have a higher non-fail rate than the fats. Not that the fat's fail rate was that high to begin with…
thats the last thing they need!
there just about to release their phone and the NGP, so there going to drop the price of this bringing it ever closer to them?
you really thing people are going to shell out more for a phone which is a century old, or for a handheld?
at least at the price it is now it increases the gap between the prices so that helps justify their price.
not to mention sony just started making a profit on the ps3 so you would think lowering it again would just send them back in the negative.
and lord knows sonys going to need all the money they can get with their legal issues!
who said you cant buy the judicial system?
only in America could you get sued for doing something totally legal!
only in the country where you can buy a gun at 18 but have to be 21 to drink.
a bottle of JD is more dangerous then a loaded gun is it?
rolls eyes!
Except Sony isn't suing GeoHot for something that is legal in the US, and before you say it, I'm well aware of the precedent set about jailbreaking an iPhone.
Mr Hots is in hot water for, among other things, publishing a heavily copyrighted and protected encryption key. Sadly, that isn't covered by the iPhone precendent. Neither is computer misuse or circumventing digital protections…
Oh, and while we're at it, since there are PS3s used as part of a US Government super computing cluster or two, hackers with the right keys pose a threat to those systems…something that courts don't tend to take a positive view of.
"only in America could you get sued for doing something totally legal!"
Shows how little you know.
except those are not connected to PSN because they removed linux, if they were they would of had to give linux up like everyone else.
ok, so its ok for sony to break the law but not for us?
fine, as the saying goes dont do the crime unless you can do the time.
well were doing the time, so i might as well do the crime!
if M$ was to remove a advertised feature they would of found them in court seconds after they announced it!
OK, so leaking a security key is illegal.
so why is KB not getting sued?
surely, whats good for the goose is good for the gander!
"a bottle of JD is more dangerous then a loaded gun is it?"
I have two Police Officers in the family and I can honestly say that they are more dangerous when they are drunk.
1. KB is a fictional person, there is no one to sue, nor was that account the source of the offending tweet.
2. What law did Sony break? They removed OtherOS from future versions of firmware but left it in the old ones, so people who wish to can retain it.
3. You stated "only in America could you get sued for doing something totally legal!" and yet now you accept that "OK, so leaking a security key is illegal.".
You know what, there are times when your comments are almost worth the effort, and there are times (like today) when you are nothing more than a pointless waste of my and everyone else's time. If you hate Sony so much – as you evidently do based on months and months of reading your comments, I have to wonder why you comment at a PlayStation specific site. The hyperbole and emotion that blind your comments, the seemingly limitless number of baseless statements and near total lack of factual information that peppers your comments is incredible to behold. The fact that some people still take your comments at face value is scary in the extreme.
TheHighlander FTW!
Another price drop? Damn, if that doesn't persuade people to pick one up, nothing will. The indoctrination of the world by Microsoft needs to be ended.
Oh, and knowing the general love and appreciation for Xenogears diplayed on this site, I'm happy to inform you that it will be on the US PSN tomorrow. Well, the 22nd, which is tomorrow here, not so sure about there.
Peace.
