Sega Buys GameWorks

It might be hard to believe, but as recently as the early 1990's, arcades were the place to go to play the definitive version of the latest games. Now almost extinct, there may be a glimmer at hope for the arcade concept. SEGA has announced that its US arcade subsidiary, SEGA Entertainment USA, already a shareholder of GameWorks, has acquired the company outright. GameWorks is an arcade/bar/grill, and while initially successful, the company filed for bankruptcy a little over a year ago.

Sega plans to add an Arena Sports Bar and Grill concept to locations, as well as replacing the tired old games with – gasp – new ones! As someone that misses the old days of spending a few hours at the arcade with friends, it would be nice to see Sega pull this off.
