Crytek: Crysis 2 “Demands More” Than The Unreal Engine

While the Unreal Engine is immensely popular, developers with bigger and more ambitious visions usually create their own engines, simply because…well, what is popular isn't always best.

Crytek is using the CryEngine 3 for Crysis 2 , and they say their new engine is powerful enough to drive just about any game out there, but Epic's Unreal Engine wouldn't have been capable of running their upcoming sequel. Thing is, Epic boos Mike Capps recently stated that he was surprised people would take Crytek seriously as a multiplatform studio ( Crysis 2 will be their first console game), so Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli was asked if he's confident the CryEngine 3 can face down other technology, like the new Unreal Engine 4. Well, Yerli's reply to CVG seems plenty confident to us:

"I think we've never cared about what competitors do. That might sound arrogant and ignorant but that's not the point. I'm trying to do what we think is the right thing to do. We're trying to build an engine that's the most productive from a flow perspective, one that allows designers, directors, artists, programmers and everyone else in the whole development chain to be as efficient as possible.

Most importantly, right now we're looking at multiplatform development and I just think that our competitors' engines couldn't deliver Crysis 2, and that's the most important statement for me."

Yerli added that Crysis 2 simply "demands so much more" and while he isn't claiming Crytek boasts the "best engine in the world," he does say there's plenty of room in the industry for multiple available engines. And the bottom line is that they created the CryEngine 3 specifically for Crysis , so we should be satisfied with the result. Finished Yerli:

"Whether our engine is better or not is something to be judged by the people who use the engine, but I can say that Crysis 2 wouldn't have been possible with any other engine, but pretty much any other game that has been shipped with out competitors' engines could have been done with the Crytek engine."

"I think we've never cared about what competitors do."

"I just think that our competitors' engines couldn't deliver Crysis 2"

He negated himself right there.. Weird.

Not really… he's basically saying, "we're doing our own thing, not worrying about what others are doing, but now that our engine has been used to create Crysis 3, I can see that it's a product that our competitor's engines wouldn't be able to handle."

From the gameplay videos Crysis 2 doesn't look all that great. Especially when compared to Killzone, Uncharted and God of War III.

What I primarily didn't like about what he said was he's basically blowing his own horn but the screens don't really show him off as waaay better.

Unreal 3 gave us what so far?
bioshock, arkham assylum, gears of war, conviction, mass effect

What crytek gave us this gen? what?
yeah 2 awfully unoptimized PC Games

Epic is EPIC, comparing them with crytek is like comparing a GT3RS with a corolla

Going to have disagree with a few fellows here, I'm glad Crytek realizes the unreal engine really isn't capable next to most other engines and it cannot yield the same great results cry engine 3 can achieve. Crysis 2 really is shaping up, and for a multiplat it looks really good.

Slayer, those games would have been better with a better engine. They were good games but it doesn't change the fact Unreal is poopy.

Stay3rs point is a good one though. Crytek isn't exactly known for optimizing their PC game engine. They are, on the other hand, known for producing a game or two that are total hogs of GPU resources.

A lot of talk… Hmm… let's see how good the ps3 version is when the game is released. If this dude is saying how good the game looks the ps3 version should be the best looking next to the pc version.

In other news, water is wet.

Unreal doesn't seem capable of powering 90% of the games that does use it. All this talk from Crytek about their engine over the actual game makes me think Crysis 2 is going to be all fancy graphics with halfassed gameplay and story.

Jawk, have you seen RDR… I think it has some of the best water effects in any video game. Looking down at the river from high up and watching the water ripples and the movement is beautiful… one of the best environments of any game, bar Uncharted 2 and GoWIII.

Lol…damn straight they haven't got the best engine in the world. Naughtydog Engine 2.0 is!

I've saw gameplay vids from E3 and I wasn't impressed..considering these are supposively the best graphics on console they's got a long ways to go before reaching the levels of KZ2…which erm, was released 2 years ago?

While I don't believe they'll have better visuals than ND, GG, ect, E3 was a long time ago, they could have been busy polishing and optimizing since then.

I'm looking forward to see how Crysis 3 will run on the PS3. However, I'm not getting my hopes up.
I can't see how they would optimize this engine for the PC/Xbox, and also be optimized for the PS3.

If they were to optimize for the PS3, it would require some radical changes to the engine design (memory allocations and math calculations). I just don't see them doing that…

In games like Battlefied 2, they just have the SPU's handling the jobs that the 360's threaded cores would be handling. So basically, no net gain for PS3 users.

I do seem to remember Crytek claiming that Crysis 2 is "currently" running better on PS3. But we all know how those claims go once the rubber meets the road.

Someone should ask him, "so how well would KZ3 run on your engine?"

big6

He's covered all the potential holes in his statements:

"right now we're looking at multiplatform development"

So that excludes the qualities of such games as Uncharted, Killzone, God of War, etc.

"but pretty much any other game that has been shipped with out competitors' engines could have been done with the Crytek engine"

Noticed he didn't say "all". He said "pretty much". That means the odd multiplatform game could not be done better with Crytek 2 engine.
But which games are those? It's up to you to decide.

Temjin001

I'd still ask him anyway just to see what he'd say =p
So what about KZ3, huh? THink your new fancy engine can handle that, huh? ……. yeah, didn't think so

I guess to be fair to Crytek, he seems to be specifically talking about multiplatform developers. Maybe he's just speaking in terms of being the best when it comes to multiplatform development. At least I hope that's what he has in mind. If he thinks he can make a multiplatform game that can out do Killzone, God of War III and Uncharted, he's smoking something.

Well good. Maybe with statements like this he can lure developers away from the Unreal Engine and over to CryEngine3. *cough* Ninja Theory *cough*

Speaking of which…

I'm having a rough time with "Enslaved" right now. I'm nearing the end of Chapter 3, however…the story isn't anywhere near gripping, and it's hard to keep interested in playing.

It's very formulaic. You start a stage, Trip uses the dragonfly to point out the endspot, mechs, bombs, etc. You traverse the stage, move on to the next.

I'm really hoping the story gets better in the later chapters.

Aside from that, I'm finding that I'm constantly fighting with the camera and the controls for Monkey are very herky-jerky. It's hard to place Monkey at a precise spot because he continues to move several frames of animation even after I've stopped moving my controller.

Ragarding Enslaved, while the gameplay doesn't get any better, it remains a decent blend of fighting, shooting, and platforming. My biggest issue was the constant hand-holding.

The good news is the story does get better, there's more comedy too, but the bad news is the moment it starts to become at all gripping the game is over.

@World,
Thanks for the info on Enslaved.
I'm going to try one more chapter and see if I can start liking the characters in it.
If not, then I'll likely jump straight into Mass Effect 2. I got the 1-hour PS+ trial and really liked it.

However, it took about 30 minutes just to customize my Commander Shepard. So really, I only had about 30 minutes of gameplay. (not enough)
But I must say, the actual game plays *much* smoother than the demo.

I recommend just knocking out Enslaved. It's worth finishing if you bought it. It's only 12 chapters and they go fast, unless you aren't having any fun at all of course.

crytek is a great developing team, only problem is their more only for pushing visuals/graphics out than focusing on gameplay etc. Crysis still the best looking game on PC probably. the gameplay of crysis was so boring. People who are comparing killzone 2 and god of war 3 to crysis sorry to say crysis looks better, not by much but better.
With uc2 looking better than crysis that's debatable. Uc2 pushes the ps3 visuals/grahpics into what games should be looking like on ps3. only problem its not mulitiplat. what i mean most exclusive games look outstanding on ps3, but mulitiplates look like garbage on ps3. Only two mulitiplates actually that look good that i think of is Dante inferno and ME2 now. I wont believe crysis 3 will look good on ps3 till actually seeing real gameplay footage on ps3. To many epic fails when mulitiplates are on the ps3.

Is that a typo or is it actually "Epic boos Mike Capps"?
Anyway, why doubt them when Crysis was one of the best looking game of all time?

They are sure to provide a game with all-awesome graphic but we'll see the difference between CryEngine 2 and 3.

And I'm sure is looking forward to Crysis 2, FPS-crowded generation but 2011 looks to be the best of them all.

Well, visually, i think it's the best multiplatform engine out there…
But since their games need to be the same on both platforms, they pale in comparison to ps3 exclusives…
But i won't be quick to pass judgement to his words until they make one ps3 exclusive game… 😛

CryEngin3 isn't the best engine, the Uncharted engine is… I do think CE3 seems better than Unreal Engine 3 though and I hope more mutiplats will use it over UE3 if they can't make their own engine which would be the best option. Games made with UE3 have plastic looking characters, too much bloom and most environments look sterile and lifeless which is OK for futuristic sci-fi space operas and post apocalyptic wastelands but try making a lush jungle setting like in Uncharted 1 with UE3 and it wont be pretty… I'm so tired of all these mutiplats using the UE3, make your own engine that perfectly fits your vision or use another engine besides UE3.

Yeah the Uncharted engine isn't used by third parties directly. However Naughty Dog does share allot of their engine tech with other Sony first party studios also I believe Naughty Dog added allot of tools that are used in the PS3 dev kits so third parties can use those tools if they wish.

I guess we'll see. I sort of like the idea of having a powerful sci-fi suit that lets you cater your play style to your tastes. Though, in light of KZ3, whatever this game is going to be pushing had better be something better than pretty good if it want's to get my money. I'm more excited to see the new Crytek engine in action then I am to play the actual game.

and pffft IGN

"While the Unreal Engine is immensely popular, developers with bigger and more ambitious visions usually create their own engines, simply because…well, what is popular isn't always best.

Developers aren't creating their own engines due the fact they have bigger or ambitioius viticious visions, but rather doing it for economic reasons.

You do undertand that that it cost a developer in the area of $700,000 just to license use of the UT3, right? Then there are royalties that Epic also collect on sales which IN real world numbers actually drives the cost of the engine higher.

Now in such an arrangment don't you think its makes better economic sense for a developer to invest in their own technology so they can collect 100% of the profits as oppose to sharing it?

Now for people that say Crytek's technology is inferior to that of ND, how many of you have actually played Crysis 2, yet alone any of the Crysis games? I'm asking because all I see are people who probably have never even touched a Crysis game.

And for the record, Uncharted games look inferior when compared to the first Crysis game.

Anyone who spent that much money to license that engine was robbed.

And in any case, if you can afford the investment in your own engine it will decrease cost of sequels (should your first game not suck)

Sorry it's just hard for me to believe that a game engine made for multiple platforms (CE3) will look better on the PS3 than an engine made from the ground up to take full advantage of the PS3's hardware (Uncharted Engine).

Also don't expect Crysis 2 to look as good as the original Crysis due to the fact that Crysis was a PC exclusive and Crysis 2 is running on CE3 which is a multi-platform engine and therefore probably wont push PC hardware anywhere near Crysis did.
