Only One Game Console In The Future?

The console wars are fun for everyone, even the competitors themselves. Competition begets a continuous chain of quality, if only because of the inherent one-upsmanship. But some, like Next Generation and God of War designer David Jaffe, believe the days of these wars are numbered.

The three major players in the game now may not be around forever, and Jaffe believes that in ten years, there will only be one console . There is a side out there voicing support for the formation of a video game standards commission, which would strive to develop a standardized console format. In other words, they want it to be like DVD players, which play all DVD media.

Taken from the article- "Honestly, at its current rate I don't know how much further the industry can go unless we do all band together and start watching out for our best interests as a community… Cliché as it might be, a united front is a strong front – and we've got a hell of a lot to offer the world."

At this point, though, we're a long ways from such a goal. If it hasn't been documented enough, one fact is relatively obvious- the technical capabilities of each competitor are vastly different, especially when it comes to the hardware design. And if the following generation sees another three consoles, it will certainly be more than ten years before game consoles begin to emulate the world of DVD and MP3 players. And for the record, we're mostly against the idea because we'd rather not see more co-modification of video games.
