Cage Thanks Fans For Heavy Rain’s “Real Success”

We recently awarded Heavy Rain co-Game of the Year 2010 , and part of the reason is because it was the most progressive, forward-thinking game of the year.

And Quantic Dream boss David Cage believes his successful, ambitious project has paved the way for "richer storytelling in interactive entertainment." In speaking to PSM3 for the publication's "100 Moments of 2010," the studio head wanted to send a heartfelt message to everyone who supported the masterpiece in question:

"If I may, I would like to add a message for all the people who supported us and bought Heavy Rain, and to all my colleagues in the industry who voted to give awards to Heavy Rain. I would sincerely like to thank everybody for their trust and support, and for having made Heavy Rain a real success.

This game granted credibility and respect for the ideas that we believe in, and I am convinced that Heavy Rain has and will open doors to others to approach interactivity in different and more mature ways. I always said that the success or the failure of the game would send a strong message to the industry. This is now done. Thank you to all the people who believed in us and gave Heavy Rain a chance."

We remember being very concerned before Heavy Rain arrived, primarily because we knew Cage was right: if it failed, it would prove gamers simply hadn't grown up. And that is a very discouraging thought. But most critics loved it and instead of a meager few hundred thousand in sales (which was initially expected), the game went on to sell over 1.5 million units. As for Quantic's next project:

"We are working hard to invent the next revolution after Heavy Rain, and to surprise all the people who believe in our vision and to convince the others that games can become a more meaningful medium."

We couldn't be more thankful to Cage and Co. for accomplishing what they have, and we're overjoyed at the success of Heavy Rain . Therefore, we will be keeping a very close eye on their new title…

I'm glad Sony developers can see success in their franchises even though they don't hit record sales numbers like Call of Duty. Japanese developers should learn some from Quantic Dream. Their games can still be a success without trying to appease the twitch gamers.

They should, but they won't. Nobody in Japan is interested in Heavy Rain so I doubt Japanese devs will somehow turn their attention its way.

Mr. Cage forced me to take notice of his work a decade ago with his first work ('Omikron'), made a follower out of me with his next ('Fahrenheit'), and then put me in the position of wondering what he could possibly do after the masterpiece that is the aforementioned 'Heavy Rain.'
It is I who should be thanking you, Mr. Cage. We need more people like you in this industry.

I was really worried this game wouldn't sell very well, and on any other system it probably wouldn't have. Alan Wake for example sure didn't, despite being lauded as a great game. It all comes back to the theory a lot of people here at PSXExtreme hold, that the PS3 crowd are the most diverse of this generation. If it weren't for the variety of tastes, we wouldn't get gems like this. This is why total consoles sold don't necessarily mean anything: if you don't have the consumers backing up alternative games like this then you just don't get the variety.

I guess that's why a lot of developers are jumping ship to Sonys console now. Unless your game is a FPS or an already established franchise, you probably won't go far on the Xbox in terms of sales. It's a shame really, I own an Xbox too but I don't play it very often at all. I play it for Mass Effect and that's about it. This year isn't looking too flash either.

Anyway, congratulations Quantic Dream. You've really opened up the future of adventure games on next generation consoles, something you guys deserve to get all the praise in the world for.

Just out of curiosity, are you going to stay with Mass Effect on Xbox to carry your saves forward on into ME3 or finish out the series on PS3?

edit: or both.

I was tempted to get the PS3 version, but I think I'm gonna stay with the Xbox version, but only because it transfers the characters over and story decisions. Also I kinda wanna have a reason to use the Xbox, and I like the controller too. 🙂

Never try to argue with an Xbot about the value of variety. They just don't get it. Thankfully, we do, and as such encourage new ventures always. As long as Sony keeps providing us with different experiences, I'll continue to buy them.
Peace.

Hear Hear! I put some faith in this by preordering (my second preorder ever) and was well rewarded. Simply put, they made the statement that you don't need to appeal only to violence and youth to do well in this business.

Not only that but, surprisingly enough, those of us who have grown up gaming have NOT destroyed our minds and can appreciate things on a higher level.

I look forward to their next project and hope others continue to take notes. Here's hoping L.A. Noire is another experience in adult drama that takes us a little further than point this, shoot that.

I kinda feel bad because I bought Heavy Rain used. I wouldn't have but I got it for $35. I made up for it though because I convinced 3 people to buy it and I know they all bought new copies.

Is there some need for gamers to grow up?

I've been gaming a long time. I wasn't aware I was supposed to be living up to the expectations of those who view gaming as childish.

I just finished playing Heavy Rain for the second time and I cannot wait to play it again to see the other possibilities in the story. I am sure that I am going to get my first platinum with this game.

First game I played on the PS3, first game I finished playing, first game I beat more than once, and (soon enough) first platinum trophy.

Thank you, David Cage and everyone at Quantic Dream, for giving us such a brilliant game!

Been through Heavy Rain 4 times and still finding new endings.

Definately warrants a playthrough every few months just to remind yourself how great it is.

GOTY in my opinion. Only game to make me cry!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it is a psychological predisposition to conflict. He has to have some form of negativity and conflict in all aspects of life.

You are most welcome, Mr Cage. And, I must offer you a thanks also. Thank you for giving me an experience unlike almost any other to be foind in gaming. Thank you for bringing gaming a step closer to legitimisation in the eyes of the general populace. And thank you for being one of the most forward-thinking people in the video game industry today. And in advance, thank you for continuing to aspire to greatness, and similarly inspire it in fans of your works. Never give up on making games.

Now I really want to know what the team is working on next. Something that will surprise us, and will also be a revolution. I'm sure he can do it.
Peace.

I wish more games were going in the direction of Heavy Rain than COD, but I guess I can at least be glad there are some companies willing to do something new and creative.

There is no need for David Cage to thank us. "If you make it they will come" sound familiar, well certain developers have this phrase plastered on their forehead whether they know it or not and Quantic is one of them.

No need for thanks just keep doing what you're doing and we'll call it even.
