It's Virtua Fighter mania right about now, so what better time to stage a big competition in Japan? It seems this is the time of year for such contests, as we brought you the story of the Armored Core 4 competition that's coming up in March. Unfortunately, while importers can participate in the latter by hopping on the PlayStation Network, the VF 5 tournament will be held only in Tokyo.
Sega is calling it the "Fight of the Century," and it's taking place at the company's gigantic AOU booth during the yearly arcade game exhibition. It's an annual event, consistently attended by plenty of gamers; the competition itself will have 64 players going at it. However, each must come prepared with their own VF.Net access card, so don't forget that one essential requirement if you plan on participating. The version they'll play is Version B, which is identical to the build that Sega ported over to the PS3.
Virtua Fighter 5 is a wonderful accomplishment, to be sure, and it's certainly a fun game. But make no mistake- this is going to be a very hard-fought and tense competition. If there's one thing the Japanese take seriously when it comes to their games, it's home-grown franchises like this one. There's no prize here, but the winner will happily claim his title of "Fighter of the Century." Good luck all!
