Xenogears, Vagrant Story Slated To Become PS1 Classics

The PlayStation Store is now home to tons of fantastic PS1 classics, and role-playing fans have been quite satisfied with current offerings.

But they're about to become even happier, as a new list of games rated by the ESRB continue to prove that the PS1 was indeed an RPG juggernaut.  Whenever the ESRB re-rates old games and lists the PS3 and PSP as intended platforms, we usually know the score before the official announcement arrives. According to Examiner.com , several notable titles are on the way to digital reincarnation:

Obviously, the most notable are those last two, arguably two of the greatest RPGs to grace any platform ever. It's a tad depressing as it only further illustrates just how awesome Squaresoft really was, and just how far Square-Enix has fallen, but we'll try not to think about that. Instead, we prefer to think of it this way: some of the greatest games ever will soon be available to a new, wider audience.

And for the record, while I was the RPG king in those days, I regret to say I never played Xenogears . Not being a fan of the mech/sci-fi setting and preferring my Final Fantasy , Suikoden , and Wild ARMs games, I stupidly passed on it. Maybe if there's a lull next year I can give it a try…

I'll definitely be buying 'Vagrant Story' and 'Xenogears', two games I already own, but which are getting quite worn (especially the former). And possibly 'Arc The Lad III', which I remember wanting to try a long time ago, but never did. Great opportunity to play catch-up. Keep 'em coming!

For once, I can actually say Australia got something before the US.

I got Vagrant Story on the Aussie PSN about 9 months ago. Great game. Graphics are pretty old school, and the first closed dungeon basement area got old pretty quick, but the game really would've been great for its time. Great story too.

I really am quite surprised it hasn't hit the US PSN yet, I really am!!! You guys are in for a treat.

Also, is Xenogears worth getting? what kind of game is it?

Yes! Xenogears, finally! Was gonna use more exclamation points but didn't want to overdo it…

YES!

Xenogears is an immediate purchase.

Yeah, I think I'll finally take the time to play Xenogears. Once I finish FF9, of course–I'm getting close I think.

Highlander, I am very excited for you to play Xenogears. I absolutely KNOW you will like it!

Finally Xeno and Vagrant will be definite buys for me. Hell all of them except R4 will be definite purchases.

I played a good chunk of Vagrant Story back in the day, it was cool. I remember being impressed by the dialogue and vibe. It was pretty hardcore detailed, too, in terms of memorizing and understanding all the attribute types etc. I never finished it, but maybe someday now.

I also never got a crack at R4. I like the RR series a lot and I remember R4 being praised as one of the best arcade racers on PSX, way back when. I think it even runs at 60fps.. a rare feat for most games back then (outside of fighters).

I was really excited that they put up Front Mission 3 but finally, they're gonna put Vagrant Story on the store. Its been on the PAL store for a while but I've been waiting for them to put it up here. Xenogears is a great game(I still own a greatest hits copy of it). Lots of old school Square goodness coming up.

I'm borrowing a copy of Xenogears from a friend and I feel bad cause I'm not playing it as fast as I should be. I can return his copy and buy it for myself now (without spending a fortune, I might add.)

This is just great! I have a copy of Xenogears, still in mint condition but sometimes there are games that you simply just don't feel bad about purchasing twice.

As for Vagrant Story, I've been sitting idly waiting for it to come to the PSN and wouldn't you know it, here it comes. Thats awesome. This is one I've never got the chance to play so I'm ready.

But really, where are we going to find time to play all these games. Classic PS1 games and kickass PS3 games on the horizon. God forbid PS2 and Dreamcast games hit PSN soon.

I play all my PS1 games on the PSP now. Of course the few I have on disc now can't be played that way, which is why I'm so happy that Sony is still bringing PS1 classics to PSN.

The Dreamcast games are already there, with more on the way 🙂

Highlander, what about Remote Play? That's how I play my PS1 FFs on my PSP.

The first Suikoden is there.

yeah, I snagged that for 50% off a few months ago. Really, I should move to Suikoden after FF9, but Xenogears is tugging at me harder. It also helps that I really liked Xenosaga.

Temjin, are you sure it was on sale? If I had seen Suikoden on sale, I would definitely have bought it. Which is ridiculous, because it's a steal at its regular price of $6.

The only reason I haven't is excessive back log.

edit: Was the sale for PS Plus only? That would explain why I overlooked it.

I used to own Vangrant Story. I lost my copy before I could complete it. I might pick it up though I remember kind of getting a meh feeling at the time.

Speaking of Sqaure Enix's decline, when do you supposed was the turning point? Seemed like they started off well enough. Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favorite JRPG's to date. I expected great things from them then they just seemed to fade away. Was it when Wada became CEO?

I've gotta say the merger.

They released great games after the merger, but every decision since then seems to be wrong in some fashion.

Wada certainly seems to be the culprit, though.

Still have my original copies of Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Unfortunately I never finished either one. There was just too many RPG's back in those days and I had too many saved games on my memory cards to keep playing all of them. Wonder if they'll bring Tales of Destiny, any of the Tecmo's Deception series, Brigandine, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, and Beyond the Beyond to the PS Store.

These 2 games were before I got into gaming and I've been trying to get a hold of them for years, but they are impossible to find at an affordable price.

This article just made my day. I can't wait.

Geobaldi

Agree about the price point for those games. That's just another reason I still have my copies since the prices tended to keep climbing for them. Now I might sell my copies before the prices really fall. Did the same thing with Marvel vs Capcom 2. Got just under $200 for it on Ebay. Last I looked it was around $50 for the disc now. These re-releases are great but it hurts the value of the originals from a seller's point of view.

TheHighlander

Unless you're holding on to them for sentimental reasons, now would be a good time to get them opn Ebay before the availability of Xenogears on PSn kills the value of the original disc. Then again, I'm not sure that FFVII and FFVIII declined in value after becoming available on PSN. Anyone know?

Geobaldi
Geobaldi

I'd say they did. I sold my original FF VII for around $80 or so. Picked it up again a few months later for $14 and you can still find copies that cheap with no problems. The same goes for FF VIII also. The PC versions of both I have is worth more last I looked them up.

And ladies and gentlemen, this is why subscribing to PS+ is a great idea. Instead of paying full price for ps1 games you get nice discounts.

My quest is to buy all the ps1 games I can get my hands on (and that I actually like of course).

This is really nice, will finally own Xenogears. Have Vagrant Story.

Ben, if you can't wait, I'll mail you my copy of xenogears! its that awesome. It does start of a tad bit slower than other rpgs back then BUT the pay off is worth it

Brilliant and Ridge Racer Type 4 too! the best car racing game of the PS1 (discounting Crash Team Racing). I hope we in the UK get Xenogears for the first time, I already have Vagrant Story from the store 😛

Now no one has an excuse to not play Xenogears!!! It always has been and likely always will be, my number one favorite game of all time, period.

Unfortunately, it was released the same year FFVII was, and it lived in it's shadow as a new IP. How many of you can find the Tifa poster in Xenogears!?! 😉

And Ben…. the MOMENT you get a lull, you need to start playing this title. In fact, just throw it on your PSP's memory card and play it every time you need to take a long trip the the john.

Yay, I will play Xenogears again on my PSP/PS3. I think it is better to hook the PSP to the TV instead of making the PS3 stretching it.

Work well with FFT so we'll see, must say I've been waiting for this to come.

Now all I need is Chrono Cross on PSN and should be pretty satisfied.

I mean if there are no Turn based RPGs anymore. the only way is to go back and play the ones from golden years again.

wish sony would add more PS1 classics to the PSN!
tis the reason why so many people have there PSPs hacked, so they can actually play there favorite PS1 games.
wish they would add bugs and taz time busters, or sheep raider.
by far the best ps1 games ever released!
