Well, the rumor about film maker Guillermo Del Toro getting involved in video games was true, and now it appears he's in it for the long haul.
After the "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy" director unveiled his game project – in collaboration with developer Volition and publisher THQ – at the Spike TV VGAs this past weekend, it seems that Del Toro and Co. are planning to go inSane three times over. That's right, THQ has revealed that the game will be the first in a trilogy…even though that first title won't arrive until 2013. As for the director, he had this to say:
"With this new series of video games, I want to take players to a place they have never seen before, where every single action makes them question their own senses of morality and reality."
Del Toro is the creative director and although we don't have much information on it just yet, some say it'll be an RPG, or perhaps more accurately, an action/RPG (yeah, well, what isn't an action/RPG these days?). Furthermore, Del Toro will own the rights "to any filmed entertainment products" based on the game, so he could be going for a double whammy; i.e., three games and three blockbuster movies to go along with 'em.
As for intended platforms, the game's website lists PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and the corresponding PSN and XBLA services. It'll be interesting to see how an accomplished movie director fares in the interactive entertainment world. Given how close the two mediums have come over the past few decades, perhaps he'll be able to do some amazing things…
