The first week of Game of the Year nominations for the PSXE readers is complete, and the top five will move on to the finals.
Heavy Rain was the leading vote getter for this first batch, followed closely by Red Dead Redemption and Gran Turismo 5 . These were by far the most popular, and the last two to squeak in were Call of Duty: Black Ops and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker . Most probably could've predicted the titles that would move on, but it's interesting that Heavy Rain topped the poll. Given the popularity of Gran Turismo 5 and the wide mainstream appeal of Red Dead Redemption , we would've picked one or the other to take the lead. But we have to remember the readership 'round these parts is a bit more intelligent and mature, and we probably shouldn't underestimate the reader's interest in intellectual, progressive experiences. The question is, can Quantic Dream's masterpiece topple what many perceive to be the overwhelming favorite, God of War III ?
It wasn't easy to pick in last week's poll, and it won't be any easier this time around. Many claim Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is superior to Black Ops , Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood has a staunch following (although not so much at this site), and there are plenty of Final Fantasy XIII fans out there. Also, don't forget about the dark horses like Joe Danger … Vote now! The top 5 will round out the final 10!
Heavy Rain definitely deserves this, such a truly fantastic game. Really moving, such a great experience. GT5 definitely deserves all the praise it can get, one of most underrated games I have been lucky enough to play in a long time.
I'm pretty steamed about the VGA results but I won't get into that.
I cannot believe Ethan Mars did not get a nomination for best character. I mean Woods?? You've gotta be joking. He's just a hot headed solider oh boy haven't seen one like him before.
Yeah, Woods winning was awkward.
Thats what I call "Rigged"

I personally think that Heavy Rain will beat GOW III as GOTY. This is primarily due to the fact that it is just so different from every game and in the best way possible.
Also the poll say Need for Speed : Brotherhood.
I'm voting GOW3.
Need For Speed: Brotherhood sounds interesting, I wonder where it takes place.
Need for Speed: Brotherhood takes place in the hood. Gangsters shoot at you while you race for pink slips.
Roam
NFS: Brotherhood. You know, the game where you race horse chariots while trying to outrun Centurions and hoplites. It was the perfect balance of quality and innovation =p
I thought it was about a secret society of assassinating cars .
assassinating cars?(Cole already can do that) or cars assassinating people?
"An unsuspecting hapless victim enters a seemingly harmless car. He's entirely unaware that the car WILL soon drive him over a cliff…" well, wait. the car would die too. So that wouldn't work.
yeah, I'm having too much fun with this =p
me too, phase II gonna be clean sweep for GOWIII
In my book, nothing deserves GOTY more then Heavy Rain.
If the game would have been called Call of Duty: Heavy Rain, the VGA would have been all over it.
It's continually disappointing how everything in my country (USA) revolves around someone with a gun and foul mouth.
sigh….
God of War 3!

Heavy Rain. Nuff said
God of War III.
You put Bayonaise on there as a slap in the face to WorldEnds, didn't you?
No, I put it on there because of review scores.
God of War III is a great game, easily one of the best experiences this generation, and certainly the best on this list by a distance.
But despite it's brilliance, it wasn't the best game I've played this year (which says something about the quality of games released in 2010). For the sheer amount of innovation it brings to the table and for pulling off a seemingly impossible gameplay mechanic, Heavy Rain takes that cake, followed closely by Gran Turismo 5. Red Dead Redemption would be tied at 3rd spot with GoW for me.
Hey Ben, for the awards that you guys will pick, are you going to have a separate category for PSN games? Since these are usually low budget productions, gems like Joe Danger and Tumble would miss out.

why was there no love for Heavy Rain at the VGAs?
it should have at least been nominated for best character or best musical score
It was nominated for best PS3 game but lost out to GoWIII.
As I said above, people were to consumed over COD Version 25.
@MaxPontiac
I think you mean CoD version 1.25…
It's a tough call but GoW had such a high level of awesomeness that it probably would be illegal in some parts of the globe. lol. I vote GoW III.
I voted HR last week–I feel so intelligent. But not so much cause I haven't played the full game–yeah, I R suck. It just seemed most deserving to me. RDR probably had a shot at it, too. Though, it sort of seems like a GTA in a Cowboy's body.
Anyhow, this week I'm picking GoW3. It's this year's best looking game(OH THE GRAPHICS!) and it's the most incredible blend of exhilarating cinematics and game play. Granted, the game genre itself still plays out pretty last-gen and the dynamics of it's play doesn't quite stack up against a few of it's rivals. But in the end, it's a not to miss experience that will raise the bar for all others to be measured against by way of visuals, artistic direction, and unbelievable cinematic scale.
Heavy Rain is one of the best games I have played. It truely deserves to get nominated :). By the way, this poll is much harder. It's difficult choosing between GOW3, BF:BC2, and AC Brotherhood. I think I will choose GOW3 though; I don't want Kratos to get enraged, and rip my head off because I didn't choose his game :D.
GOW III is kicking major @$$ in this week. Glad to see heavy rain squeaked through.
GOWIII, the goriest, sickest, most mind-blowing action game this year.
Heavy Rain Changed Video Games!
still have to pick up Heavy Rain…LOL…played the demo but other than that, i've been too busy.
whose gonnna be the lone warrior to vote for rock band 3 lol
I guess that would be me.
i don't think assassins creed deserves any kind of goty nomination.
nor does call of duty.
thats right. i think black ops was an overhyped, overrated game
both games just did the same crap as last year
(EDIT) heavy rain is deserving of this goty nomination. there was many deserving games, but this game pulled on some heart strings rarely pulled in video games

No, they didn't.
yes, they did
Then don't ever review games.
Both games have similar gameplay, and yeah, Black Ops has a ton of problems that I'm discovering the more I play it.
But it can hardly be said that both games are doing the exact same crap as last year. There's enough change in both to warrant them being unique titles.
Heck, AC:B isn't even another number. It's meant to be a sequel specifically to AC2.
yeah, Underdog, kinda like Halo 3 ODST… =p
btw ben, u should definitely do categories. theres too much quality in some of those games on the list. many deserve honorable mentions
Damn, I've only played three of those, and as good as FFXIII was, Lightning is no match for Kratos. God of War III it must be. Although I'm saddened by the lack of a mention of VC2 on these lists… That is one of my favourite games of the year.
Peace.
I voted Heavy Rain last week, and I voted God of War III this time. Too bad we cannot choose at least three, as I would have chosen Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and God of War: Ghost of Sparta as well. I know people are rooting for Assasin's Creed, but I cannot vote a game I haven't even played yet.
This week is easier then last week… God Of War III all the way baby.
True that! God of War III has this one in the bag
I am a HUGE God of War fan, but I would be tremendously disappointed if it won GOTY here at PSX. The truth is, the pacing and storyline doesn't even come close to touching God of War 2 or the first one. I had the misfortune of playing Bayonetta (on 360) before this, and I was pretty let down by the combat too…Not that God of War 3 was a bad game in any way. Quite the contrary. It had more "Holy ish…" moments than any other game I played this year. Still…that doesn't mean it deserves GOTY. As unique as Heavy Rain is, I don't think it deserves a GOTY award either. I would assume Red Dead Redemption will win, but the truth is, the hands down GOTY in my mind is Mass Effect 2. No other game even game close to matching its brilliance. PS3 owners should be VERY excited to be getting the game next month.
2011 on the other hand…I can't even imagine choosing between:
1. Little Big Planet 2
2. Mass Effect 2
3. Killzone 3
4. inFamous 2
5. Resistance 3
6. The Last Guardian
7. Twisted Metal
8. Uncharted 3
9. Dead Space 2
10. Dragon Age 2
And I'm still missing a TON of games like L.A. Noire, possibly Agent, and others…scary lineup.
I already want to get all of those games. Plus Motorstorm 3. I'm gonna need a job.
i'm disapointed that uncharted 2 isn't nominated, but i dont remember when it came out so it might of been in last years awards
Uncharted 2 was 2009.
Awesome Line up of Games for PS3
Mass Effect 2
Killzone 2
Yakuza 4
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD collection
Infamous 2
Batman Arkham City
Resistance 3
Uncharted 3
and The Last Guardian
I have to buy all these superb games.
I love gt5 my review was 9.9999 its a oustanding game to me but…. I played Heavy Rain & this game was something else…. the story the level of interaction the sound the graphics aww man…. i was really into this game the characters, the game was just something new & refreshing.
I didnt get to buy GOW3 played the demo at least 20 times only 30secs into it i decided its a must have but im the type of person if i play a series it has to be from the beginning. (even borrowed all yakuzas on ps2 before i played it on PS3 another raw series by the way.) while playing all i could do was smile & say kratos is one solid, bad *%$@%#$%&*%$*.
Red dead: i really wanted to play but never even seen in it person yet just videos…
CODBO: bought it for my lil brother i was gone buy me a copy but i said naw… there will be another one next year.
ACB: this is one trill series & havent bought this one yet. i cant wait to see bout the story.
In all there are other games that were released 2010 but i go by what i experienced so between Heavy Rain & GT5……… i gotta say Heavy Rain
