Twisted Metal On Store Shelves In “Less Than A Year”

David Jaffe has been busy lately. But the question everyone has is, "how much longer, Eat Sleep Play?"

We are of course referring to the upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive, Twisted Metal . We have never had an estimated release date for this promising entry in the long-running franchise, but it seems we're now allowed to guess: according to one of Jaffe's most recent Tweets , maybe we can expect a holiday 2011 launch:

"Holy shot! Less than a year & our baby will be on these [store] shelves! I can’t wait AND I’m fu**in terrified! :)"

A little later, when prompted by a reader, Jaffe responded that a release date announcement will be coming "soon," so maybe it'll show up and surprise the hell out of everyone at the Spike VGAs… After E3, we wouldn't put it past them. And you know, if we're going to speculate, has anyone considered the possibility that Twisted Metal , Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 will all be out between October and November of next year…?

That's just too ridiculous, isn't it? It probably won't happen but the way things are shaping up, it's not impossible. Maybe you should just start saving up now; gotta be prepared, ya know.

Wow, I didn't think there were that many great titles this holiday season and I have a major backlog already. If all those drop next holiday I'm going to be in trouble.

I know I'll draw some thumbs down for this, but unless it's a complete game changer, for some reason I still can't get excited about TM. I played the others on the PS2, but as fun as they were, they never had that "wow! got to have Day one" factor for me. They were more of something to do to pass the time as opposed to suck you in enthralling game play to me…

So unless Jaffe has got a completely different monster up his sleeve, then I'll probably be passing on this one…especially if R3 and U3 are coming out at the same time…

I agree. I enjoy TM, but theres nothing about it that makes me want to run out and get it right away. I might get it if the price drops to $30, but with everything else going on next year, TM isnt close to the top of my list.

I only seem to recall one TM on the PS2…

…like I said, one TM for the PS2.

No offense or anything; I guess the point I'm trying to make is that we haven't had a true console installment of Twisted Metal since 2001 and Twisted Metal: Black.

And this is the reason I think not more people are excited.

If we're going to argue semantics, I guess I should clarify that I have played the others on the PS1 as well…but again, (and this was the main point) for me..(note the reference to personal opinion) TM has never had that WOW factor of a a list game.. They have been entertaining but instead of being a "gotta have it game" it been more of a "huh, that's neat" kind of game..but Maybe Jaffe is creating a beast that will change the style…if it becomes a Burnout/Ace Combat style hybrid…I'm in!

We may have not had a real installment on the PS3 yet, but still…unless the game play is changed… Graphics aren't going to make me run out and buy this.

Last twisted metal I played was small brawl and it was fun(all of them were) but I have 2 agree with you; they never really made me want to run out to the stores either in fact by the time I got my copies they had all drop in price to $20.

The Million Dollar Question is why change the gameplay? And exactly what would you like to see?? The only thing i think they can do differently is maybe some destructible environments.

What I'd like to see….Hoo boy. For me the game before was pretty cut and dry. You spawn in an arena…you drove around and tried to survive while taking everyone else out…But now? Open World maps, Destructable environments. (I know TM already had that to a certain extent) Co-op and team play experience can be amped up with online. Like I said earlier, I guess what I'm looking for is a game that makes me feel like I'm playing Burnout in a fighter jet. Heck why not make it a la GTA style where you can actually play as the characters. Have a little more storyline character development. Who wouldn't want to have Sweettooth get out of a car and do a little hand to hand combat while he hunts for a new vehicle? I'm not sure what Jaffe has in mind for this game, but for the first real version to grace the PS3? It's got a lot of potential, I'm just a little curious as to how it will turn out…

You have drive an Ice Cream Truck that'd give Death the creeps, but you wanna get out on foot, in the middle of a vehicular war zone to look for a new car??

Not asking you to like it..these are just my ideas for the game because I always found that the previous installments lacked something….Getting out of the vehicle and using the characters was my way of character development..From previous installments of this game, I'm not hyped about another one…It needs to do something different…but again, that's just me…you obviously have your own thoughts one it…

Just to make that clear, it's Gears of War 3 Vs Uncharted 3, Resistence 3 and Twisted Metal.

And let's not forget Littlebig Planet 2 in early 2011, and Motorstorm Apocalypse having a mid-2011 release as well.

Honestly, it's as if MS has just given up on exclusive titles and are focusing on Kinect, and ONLY Kinect. Their key audience don't wanna move around to shoot and throw frag grenades, and Kevin Butler has already proved that the PS3 is the perfect Home Entertainment all-in-one box for your living room.

Unless MS brings out killer games and apps for the Kinect over the next 2 years, 360 is slowly going to fade into the last-gen tech category, joining it's older, bulkier first brother.

I'm sure they'll try to pump out another Halo at some point.

PS3 exclusives would still have the edge, of course, but then again, they pretty much always have. 🙂

But who will develop the next Halo? Microsoft don't have many first-party devs, since they spend all their money buying (temporary) exclusives.

I'm sure Halo 4/5 will sell, based on the name, but will it be counted as a AAA title without Bungie?

And, at this point, who really cares?

Well, I hope to be back on the road by the end of next year, and I will put my plans on hold to play Uncharted 3 if it releases before the end of next year. However, I don't think TM will have quite the same effect for me. So, I hope that it will release before November, and I really do think that R3 will actually be a drought release. That'd be awesome. Good to see Jaffe and the team is progressing swiftly though. Can't wait to take Sweettooth for a run.
Peace.

Twisted Metal is one of those games that need to hit right befor summer to garner all of its deserved sales. Its a multiplayer game meant to be played with friends for hours, like the original that i played non stop with my friend seth. If they hit a May release and everyone has a chance to sit down with it for summer, we have a winner.

2011 will be the year of Playstation. At least for PS3 to say the least. They have been shaping up a lot of games and polishing them up for a 2011 release. I'm glad that a lot of AAA games are coming out throughout the '11 year. From games expecting to release as early as 1st Quarter & 2nd Quarter 2011.

It's perfect. 2010 was a decent year but Sony didn't have such a solid line up to fill up the year completely. Next year though…wow, I think we'll be looking at a lot of great and fun titles year 'round.

VGA is one week away, lets go!

Been a real long time for TM..even after seeing it in action a little, it didn't give me that "must have" feeling. I just don't see myself putting much time into at this point even though I'm sure it'll be one of the best out..Maybe a few more trailers and I'll be sold…

Yeah this is a must buy for me. TM is one of my most beloved franchises. Not much has been shown on this game but i'm sure it'll be super awesome. Jaffe is pretty top notch so i'll keep good faith in it.
