The world of video game technology continues to advance at a rapid rate, and there are no shortage of early adopters.
At least, that's how Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter sees it. The well-known industry analyst has predicted that both PlayStation Move and Microsoft's Kinect will hit 20-25 million combined sales before the end of 2011. However, he also warns that with the emergence of this fancy new hardware, we might see a dip in software sales. Said Pachter:
"Given recent guidance from Microsoft, it is likely that the two peripherals will have an installed base of 8 million by year-end, and depending upon pricing, we could see an installed base that approaches 20–25 million by year-end 2011.
These 20–25 million households are likely to buy 2–3 games apiece, resulting in software sales of 40–75 million units and publisher revenues of $1.6–3 billion next year. These sales are not all incremental; clearly, consumers who buy Kinect or Move are console owners, and presumably, they would have bought other games had they not purchased the peripherals."
Sony has recently revised their announcement of selling 4 million Move units worldwide ; that was a "shipped" number, not a "sold" number. They made a mistake in the press release they distributed. As it stands, the actual sales number is around 2.5 million; Microsoft has stated that Kinect sold over 1 million units in its first five days at retail. Both seem to be off to strong starts, but perhaps it'll be the compatible software lineup that will set them apart in the future…
So, you've got both Move and Kinect at home, right? You're all into supporting this stuff, huh? …okay, maybe it only makes sense to have one or the other.
Not to be "that guy," but SONY didn't make a mistake in their press release. Manufacturers do not report sold-to-consumer figures. When they report figures they are talking about "sold" as in "shipped to retailers" unless they explicitly say otherwise.
I love Move it's really awesome, but I barely play because of the lack of games that have replay value.
I'm waiting for Sorcery, but I have a Move. I was curious to see how it worked and I knew I'd be buying games in the future that were at least move compatible so I bought it even though I haven't purchased software specifically for it yet.
And I'm the "guy" who's telling you I've seen press releases outlining "sold" and "shipped" very explicitly in the text. It was a mistake.
well any new gadget that comes out, it needs some time to reach it's full potential. The Move is a new project from Sony.
As long as Sony keeps feeding their premium gaming audience with high production games, I hope Move is widely successful for them.
I'm not yet sold on Move or Natal as of yet. I don't think the Move controller is going to make any of my existing or future games anymore enjoyable to me. So, instead of putting any money there, I'd like to put that $130 into new games and content for the already great DS3 controller.
Wait a minute, Kinect sold 1 million even though MS said they had about 5 million preorders?
Things that make you go hmmm.
They did?
Epic failure if that's the case.
lol, it's because it didn't break on the costumers yet, when that happens about 3 to 4 times, it will get to 5 million in no time. lol 🙂

And I'll make bet that 1/4 to 1/3 of those kinects are being bought by hackers for modde on non-360 usage(Roomba Vacuum, for one).
Plus all those free Kinect's given out at those daytime TV talk shows, the Times Square launch(Hi, all you Chimera), and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America as being counted as sold too.
Don't forget the BK giveaway.
I really would have liked to win a Kinect from BK so I could sell it to get Move.
I have move but no good games to go with, sports champion is fun for a while, i really waiting for LBP2 and sorcery next year.
This is off-topic…but I used not mind seeing that boost mobile store manager on tv, but seeing him on this site makes him look VERY creepy. e_o
This shipped/sale numbers are all BS to me. Microsoft ALWAYS reveal their shipped numbers. Sony occasionally reveals ship and sometimes sale numbers. There's no way in hell does Microsoft have no stocks in any retails. It's not flying off the shelves at all.
Well I see both Move and Kinect selling millions. I personally have 2 Move controllers and a NavCon (already had the PS Eye with Eye of Judgement), so I'm pretty much invested. And I've been having a great time with the games I have so far (MAG, Hustle Kings Pool and Tumble). I'm waiting on the big games though, Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2 and Sorcery. Can't wait to see what else Move brings to the table next year.
I don't think the sales will go that high. There has been an initial surge, but that will quickly die down.. If they don't have the software, then it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to be purchasing it, does it? Promises are always good, but I demand proof.
Peace.
patcher pulling numbers out of his a$$ yet again!
i swear to god if move or kinect sell those numbers by this time next year ill eat a bulls testicle!
I have copied and pasted the address of this article and your quote onto a word document, and I'm keeping it on my desktop. I fully expect an entertaining youtube video if his predictions come true, and I'll hold you to it!!
Well all hold him to it.
LOL! Yet another contradiction by Cowpatty. Just the other day he was saying how Kinect "will sell millions and millions and Xbox's will just fly off the shelves as a result"
::facepalm::
since when does millions mean 20 – 25M?
kinect will sell well, already has sold 2.6M think it was, in not even a month!
but i seriously cant see either hitting those numbers in what will more or less be only 1 year on the market.
Move and Kinect are great in their own respect. Move is more intense and Kinect is more interactive…or is it the other way around? Either way, I played both and to be honest Kinect just doesn't have you thinking about the peripheral while Move does.
They are both very cool and only Move has the upper hand in going over boundaries simply because it isn't as limited as Kinect. Is Kinect doing it better right off the bat? Yes.
When people are ready to purchase the next and latest software game for each, will it deliver? Only time will tell. We all have high hopes for Move to set the bar on what games can be in this generation…let's hope it brings it.
The move is allot of fun, it just needs a few games.
I have both systems but I'm not getting move until some GOOD games actually start to show up (not entirely sure i'll get it even then), but as far as me gettin a kinect I don't think that will ever happen because I don't see myself playing any of the real hardcore games that the 360 has with that kinect thing (seriously though! how the do you play a game like Ninja Gaiden III with kniect???). Playing videogames with a controller in MY opinion sounds stupid especially if you can't play it with any of the hardcore titles then what's the point, but that's just ME. I've never had a interest for games like sports champions or any other of those party games, I realize that allot of people are so it is what it is.

Pachter? I didn't know people were still listening to what he has to say. Most of his Predictions that I've read kind of reminds me of a weatherman on TV…He doesn't really know what's going to happen but he has to say something so he can keep a job…
Pretty big number wouldn't you say? MOve is off to a goof start, but I don't know about kinect I haven't seen any numbers for it yet.
