3D gaming is still in its infancy and many have complained about the lower resolution and frame rate that seem inevitable in the face of a new dimension.
But things change; technology gets better. SCEE boss Mick Hocking also said 3D allows for designers to do new things with games, which will ultimately let said games reach more consumers. In speaking at the Develop at Liverpool conference, Hocking said that 3D will make everything "more accessible" and combining PlayStation Move and 3D is something that is quite appealing to those seeking new, immersive technology. The title of his keynote was, "Seeing is Believing: 3D a New Creative Medium for Games," and he also addressed the concern that 3D is little more than a gimmick: "With 3D, unlike other mediums film and TV, we can interact and innovate in far more ways," he said. He also said 3D brings various improvements to the experience as well, such as accuracy of control and timing, and a better sense of space, height and distance.
However, Hocking did add that when it comes to pre-rendered cut-scenes in games, developers should be aware that they will require "50% extra storage space." He also said that if designers want to be truly successful utilizing 3D, they'll have to "educate their creative services, QA and marketing staff to better understand what makes good 3D." He finished: "I really would urge you to start converting your game into 3D now. We're here to help you and can help with training." In a few years, he wouldn't be surprised to see "all" games be 3D-compatible.
Well, we're not sure if that will happen, but we do know 3D is an intriguing option for many gamers out there.
Did anyone notice the rather conspicuous 3D compatible label on the GT5 box?
3D is here, and I suspect that whatever anyone says, it's here to stay.
Yup, i saw that too (it made me kind of depressed since i do not own a 3d tv yet). Usually, whenever people say somethimg is a fad, it is here to stay. Curious, i suppose.
Bell Bottoms.
LOL @ World,
Dude, I've lived long enough to see f;ares in fashion three times now (three times too many IMHO), so fads and fashions do come back, even the bad ones. Every now and again an idea that is far ahead of it's time arrives early and fades away before returning at a more opportune time.
Tell me about it, this is my second go round with skinny jeans in fashion. Can't people just wear regular jeans ever?
Does anyone actually own a 3D compatible television?
How is it that Sony is focusing on 3D, when most of the consumers do not yet own 3D compatible TVs.
(I'd love a 3D TV, but the prices are to high)
It will, 3D is an option, any 3Ddicted people will get it.
I have yet to experience gaming in 3D so I'm not really hyped for 3D.
To anyone who has, how does the experience differ from standard gaming?

I had honestly forgot 3d gaming even existed until I saw it all on the GT box. Thanks for reminding me Sony, I still don't care, I'm not wearing glasses while gaming or watching films. I don't "need" a forced dimension. I can feel the emotion fine in a film without it. Not to mention you need to film high lighting so your essentially not able to play with shadows really in camera, you have to do it in post.
At this time 3D is an acquired taste. I enjoyed what I have seen so far. It will only get better. The technology is there. It's up to developers to utilize it properly. Tacking it on is.. Well.. Tacky. Show me you care enough about your product and blow me away.
I agree with you. I like what little I have seen so far.
Optional to me so far.
It will get the young and mid-age people excited but won't get the handicapped (some, bless u guys for a diffcult life than the non-handicapped people) and seniors attention.
I have a new 50 in 3d samsung and I will tell you what gran turismo in 3d is about as real as it gets to driving a real car very nice detail when it comes to the driver view of the nascar well done as for the games to come if you haven't seen 3d in your home and see what it has to offer I can only think the game developers will get much more out of it the more they use it
I can see how 3D is good for Move as you will be able to move things back and forth (toward and away from the player) with better feedback. But that's about it.
Then there's the headaches.

3D will never, and I say NEVER take-off on consoles because in the end its an expensive committment(as with all add-ons) for gamers and developers
Right now the only place that 3D have a good chance of growing(gaming-wise) is the arcades as we're now seeing, but on consoles it'll be nothing but a passing thing.
Other than Sony's idea that 3D is going to take off(on consoles)is nothing but false hope and one that is already blowing up in their faces.
TheHighlander, 3D is not a fad but rather the next extension of gaming as it always have been. The same can be said about VR technology.
Right now the biggest only hurdle for 3D(and VR) is cost…it cost too much for gamers to adopt and being so its pointless at the moment. The only reason why Sony is so bent on promoting it is so they can sell TV's, but in the end its a dead aim.
Technology costs are never static when there is sufficient competition, which we have an abundance with TVs. So the costs will gradually come down as more people buy them. Some folks were saying the same thing about the PS3 in late 2006 and early 2007, and look at the system now.
It's a big expensive gimmick for both the customer and the developer. We'll see just how many devs jump on board to get their staff trained for this kind of tech. There's gotta be quite a few wondering if the returns will equal the expense.
Well from what Guerrilla has been saying converting a game to 3D is rather easy since the game is all ready a 3D world. All you need to do is figure some depth issues and where to place the HUD but over all it is a simple-ish process.
On the consumer side it is a slightly different process. Right now it is rather expensive but I see it like the whole HDTV thing. More and more people will slowly adapt to it as time goes on.
So as more people adapt the 3D process will start to pay of and since the developers that are doing it now are early adopters they will be able to do it more efficiently than developers adopting later. So it is probably a good thing that some developers are learning this all now.

I just finished my first race on GT5(Just got my Collector's Edition today :D) and was wondering how to download the 8gig install. Nothing came up to do it and I can't find anything. I'll get my 6 DLC cars then hopefully somebody has an answer for me in not to long. I'm bringing my PS3 to my cousins and we'll be playing it all night on a 60".
Please somebody, please reply.
The long, long wait is over, and that first race was worth it 😀
See you all on the track 😀
I still have this t.v. that my mom says is around in the 1980's in my room. Which I play with all my video games with. So yeah, never had a plasma, hd, and definitely not going to have a 3d. Unless I absolutely have to upgrade.
Funny yes? Definitely not joking when I say I'm more of a gameplay person than graphics, but I do have to admit that I can't stand any graphics older than a super nintendo, sega genesis, or game boy color and even some of those are iffy!
As a side note, all of current gen video gaming graphics are spectacular!
i dont think so.
anyone who is interested in games is interested in games, adding 3D is not going to change that.
adding 3D to anything is not going to bring new people to that just because of 3D.
than theres the cost of it, i mean 3K for a 46 inch 3D TV?
i could get a 60 inch 2D TV for that price!!!!!
It's gonna be a loooong time before it catches on where I'm from. I don't think the stores here even sell 3D TVs yet; newest are the LED's.
