Square-Enix: Chrono Trigger Remake “A Possibility”

If you consider all the biggest hopes and dreams of old-school gamers, in their never-ending quest to see sequels and/or remakes to classic titles, there's one that always sits near the top of the list: Chrono Trigger . Chrono Cross was a wonderful RPG for the PS1, but it can't be considered a direct sequel, and the series has disappeared since then. In addition to a Final Fantasy VII remake, a CT remake is constantly hoped for.

Last week, 1Up spotlighted an interview with Hiromichi Tanaka, Square-Enix Senior Vice-President, and it was reported that he seemed "dismissive" when asked about a Chrono Trigger remake. But since then, the full transcript of that interview has come to light, and one particular passage keeps all that hope alive…if just barely.

"There's still a possibility, but since the main director is not working for Square Enix now — he's working on other titles in a different company, Namco Bandai, it's a bit difficult to ask him to come back and be the head of a team again. And also, Kato-san is working on the fourth game in the Mana series. So there's still a possibility that he might think he might want to make it again…"

Okay, so there are a couple obstacles. Square-Enix would need to convince a few key individuals to come back, and they'd have to squeeze in the project amidst other projects. It's probably the same obstacles they're facing for a possible Final Fantasy VII remake. But hey, "it's a possibility." For now, we RPG fans will cling to that statement like a life raft.
