Square-Enix President Talks DQ, PS3

Whenever you want a juicy quote in Japan, you simply give Yoichi Wada a call. He's got plenty of thoughts and opinions on all kinds of things game-related, and in his latest interview with Japan's Nikkei BP, the chairman of the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (and president of Square-Enix) talked about the latest Dragon Quest installment and the future of the PS3.

We know that Dragon Quest IX has been confirmed for the Nintendo DS, which has caused plenty of debate amongst the Square-Enix faithful. Will the RPG-oriented company change their focus back to a Nintendo platform after over a decade of dedicating most of their efforts to Sony consoles? Well, no, that's not the plan, according to Wada.

"Following portable machines, we see the market for the PlayStation 3 and other next generation consoles taking off, so we will develop for that," he said.

He further stated that the next set of DQ games aren't confirmed for any specific platform just yet, saying they don't plan to "fix the series on the DS." Besides, if we look at his later comments concerning the PS3, it's very possible the team is seriously looking at Sony's next-gen console for their upcoming projects. But he did mention that it's "still early," and for them to commit to a future project (presumably outside of Final Fantasy XIII ), "it will take a bit more time."

Wada predicts the PS3 market will "take off" in 2008, and elaborates on his concept of "high vision" in the game world.

"Some journalists don't understand that there's a difference in the amount of time hardware takes to spread and have taken the tone of 'the world of high vision, high quality gaming has come to an end.' However, once you see the world of high vision, there's no going back."

Well, "the world of high vision" may indeed take some time to develop, but when it does, we can fully expect Wada and Co. to be standing by, waiting to leap on board.
