Well, it might be the last month where you see a decline in the games industry, what with Call of Duty: Black Ops , Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Gran Turismo 5 hitting like a sledgehammer this month.
The October NPD results are in and the industry experienced a 4% year-over-year decline in overall sales; total hardware, software and accessory sales came in at $1.07 billion. The drop is mostly due to a shrinkage in the console and handheld market as hardware sales fell 26% to $280 million; the Xbox 360 was the only system to grow in sales in comparison to last October. For the record, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves launched in October 2009 and PS3 sales rose, so it probably isn't surprising to see that the PS3 was unable to match last year's monthly tally. On the plus side, while people weren't buying new systems, they were indeed buying new games, and software sales rose 6% to $605 million. The top-notch NBA 2K11 led the charge, followed by more sports titles like FIFA Soccer 11 and Madden NFL 11 .
Fallout: New Vegas hit the 5 million shipped plateau and came in at second place on the multiplatform sales chart. Medal of Honor was the third-best selling game and here's the rest of the list-
And here's Sony's official statement from SCEA Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, Patrick Seybold:
"PlayStation 3 has been building up tremendous momentum heading into the peak holiday season and we're seeing strong movement at retail for both hardware and software. PlayStation 3 software sales were incredibly strong in October and PS3 was the only platform that had growth in the software over September, to the tune of nearly 50%. With next week's launch of the industry's most anticipated title, Gran Turismo 5, we're sure to carry the momentum through the holidays. In addition, PlayStation Move continues to perform incredibly well.
The PS3 Move Bundle had a 15% increase in sales since launch last month, and we're working hard to keep the inventory up across the country to meet strong consumer demand. We continue to add great Move software from both our World Wide Studios group and our publishing partners with titles across all genres for everyone in the family including SingStar Dance, The Sly Collection, The Fight: Lights Out, Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Toy Story 3, MAG and NBA 2K11. With the growing content and services options for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network, including recently added Hulu Plus and NHL GameCenter, as well as the pending launch of Vudu on PS3, we're constantly adding additional value to the hardware and consumers are responding to the continuing proof that It Only Does Everything."
New Vegas is really fun but if it locks up my PS3 one more time Obsidian Entertainment is going to be on the business end of my Spetsnaz knife.
New Vegas has froze on me (to the point of rebooting the PS3) about half a dozen times.
Strange thing is that it always happens on the loading screen.
It never happened before my game saves hit the 7000 kb mark.
It's too bad Bethesda almost never releases patches no matter what. I dunno if that decision lies with Obsidian but I blame them for making it freeze so much in the first place. Still it's a great game even if it doesn't quite measure up to F3. Mine's probly frozen 8 times and I think one more will find Obsidian's nose sniffing my big Amish ass.
I got spurrrrs that jingle jangle jingle…
Freezing? Unfortunately, that's sort of what Bethesda does.
wow, you guys aren't getting nearly as many freezes as i am… it's locked up on me probably about 3 dozen times… but then again, i've probably put more hours into it already…
i love it!! i just wish it did this a little less than it does… i fear having to give my system a hard-restart every time… but this issue isn't keeping me from playing it though but, it is getting rather annoying…
@bOnEs
Games that freeze frequently often do so because their installation file on the HDD has some small amount of corruption, or because the temp files that the game caches to the HDD are encountering file corruption. You can use the service menu to fix the file system, which can remove most corruption such as this. There are instructions for this on the Sony Playstation forums and on the Sony knowledge base.
Castlevania: LoS and Enslaved are no where to be seen =
IMO I do believe Lords of Shadow belongs on the list. A great game indeed.
Enslaved is so low on the chart it fell off.
It would seem that people like competitive sports-like games most these days. I would recognize the online shooter craze as nearly belonging to the same category. These games aren't so much content driven as they are competitive-game driven. Just take a look at how many of those top games selling games fit into that category.

Great observation!
I'm surprised Fallout:NV did so well. I guess RPG zealots don't mind buying broken software. Pretty desperate if you ask me.
eh, when the experience is so great you take the bad with the good.
I thought Halo Reach was so invincible.
Top 10 two months in a row is pretty damn good, espcially when one of those months it was numero uno.
With all the games coming out in November, I'll be surprised to see it on that list again.

I'm almost done with New Vegas, it will be sad because it'll probly be 5 years and a new generation before we see Fallout 4. Ain't that a kick in the head?
Will be interesting to see if Fallout 4 comes out before the Fallout MMO does. The MMO is scheduled for 2012 currently.
I thought that project died on the table. I don't suppose it'll be free to play either.
Nope, Bethesda dropped their injunction appeal against Interplay after losing their court battle. So I wonder how the original Fallout company will handle their entry to the franchise after being away from it for so long. I hope it's not free 2 play. Pretty much all of those suck royally. Lord of the Rings Online is one of the few exceptions, as is Vindictus, though I still keep my paid subscription to LotRO.
hopefully the next one is built on the new engine they are using for RAGE and Brink, id Tech 4 or 5 or something… this oblivion engine is really REALLY looking outdated these days…
but i don't want them to completely overhaul the system though, just get it running on a better engine… the formula for fallout works too good to change that up…
I still have to pick up New Vegas. I just couldn't bring myself to buy it at full price with the reviews it's gotten.
surprise, surprise there not singing the same song and dance about sales……….
i thought move would help boost sales so they would see similar sales to this time last year.
oh boy, was i wrong!
eh, GT5 will soon change that.
or it would if they actually bothered to release that epically cool racing blue ps3 here!!!!!!!!!
