Call of Duty is big. In fact, based on numbers alone, it's the biggest video game franchise of the generation.
But over time, Crytek believes it can match Activision's series in terms of overall popularity, by continuing to produce more iterations of their own franchise, Crysis . Bear in mind that they're not necessarily predicting that Crysis will someday be as popular as CoD; it's more of an optimistic, ambitious viewpoint. When asked if Crysis would one day become a widely adored and respected series, Nathan Camarillo gave Eurogamer a simple response: "Why not?"
"As the franchise grows down the line, there's no reason it can't be as big [as Call of Duty]. It's very appealing in that it's a near future military setting. It appeals to sci-fi gamers as well because of the sci-tech, science fiction elements. It's not a space opera. It's not set 300 years in the future. It's 13 years in the future.
It's something people identify with and can take this small leap of faith to get into this world and this universe. By offering a great single-player campaign, a great multiplayer experience and giving people something fresh and different than a normal soldier can do with the nanosuit – it's a pretty powerful feeling."
Clearly, Crytek plans to release more Crysis titles in the future and Camarillo adds that they're "taking it very seriously." In the end, provided things go well, this could mean we'd see " Crysis 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9… Crysis Infinity ." So perhaps in 2018, everyone will be clamoring to get in line at midnight launches for Crysis 5 . Hey, we applaud ambition wherever we find it but considering the competition…well, we'll just offer Crytek a hearty "good luck."
Related Game(s): Crysis 2
Unless Crytek pump out Crysis annually, there's no way in hell it will ever.
And before talking about CoD's popularity, they should be talking about catching Killzone 2's popularity first, then Halo and then CoD.
Because PC gamers and Console gamers are very different people and require different products
They optimized their games for PC mainly and left the consoles in the dust really
I think it's a good mindset and goal for a studio to believe that the sky is the limit for their ambitions.
Whether it's probable or not that they ever beat CoD in popularity, I don't think it's as nearly as important as a set of talented devs aiming to produce something that in their minds may become number 1 some day.
CoD, while milked, still manages to be a respectable and quality franchise, and if Crytek aims to usurp that quality then we have some healthy competition that helps both business and consumer in the end.
its a little funny to see people talk about setting unrealistic goals. not to say it would never happen but i personally dont see it happening.
hey great aim for the stars, just make sure you dont land in new jersey instead
There's a big difference between being just as good or better, and being more popular.
I don't know why but this developer bugs me. They talk to much. Before their first console game is even released they are proclaiming "king of the mountain." I'm not going believe anything they or EA say about this game. MoH proves EA likes to hype their games to no ends only to fail once delivered.
They did that with their PC releases, so I'm not really surprised that they continue to do it with the consoles.
I agree. I can already hear the excuses of the limitations of consoles.
On topic, they probably should set the bar a bit lower for their first outing. They may (or may not) be the best PC dev but they got some massive shoes to fill as far as console devs go.
Wishing them luck tho.

@Jawknee yea the hype is annoying but at the same time Activision hypes the crap out of COD and its nothing spectacular either.
I'll wait to see what Crysis 2 looks like before I make any judgments but regardless, even if when it's released its viewed as undoubtedly the best FPS ever, you know it still won't sell even close to half of what COD sells.
@elass Just to clarify there, they aren't setting the bar that high for this Crysis, they said sometime down the line so its kinda like it'll happen eventually statement.
What else have they made? Sure Crysis is pretty but it doesn't look like it's all that great. The art direction is pretty bland and that guy in the armored body suite looks ridiculous. Not a very nice character design if you ask me.
Personally, I'll take Crysis over CoD any day.
i have to say they have a point. why cant it be as big a COD. infact if Crysis 2 is extremely well recieved critically and comercially i can see alot of PC players converting to PS3 especially if move controls are implemented as they boast a simularity to a mouse when playing the game. However it is a big ask for it too get to COD status though due to the marketing machine that activision has, with things like manufactur and celebrity endorsements. Sony could learn alot from the Activision marketing crew. They could release a bad COD and it would still sell. i just hope Sony start marketing and putting KZ3 into the hands of people that can make a difference on social networks etc as KZ3 as it stands at the moment is looking like a genuine COD beater but i think the sales after launch might suggest otherwise.
Crysis my favorite fps right after Half Life 2.
They don't need to be more popular or just as popular, have you all noticed something, that the latest CoD really didn't score as high as MW2. You know why? Because the CoD name is starting to loose its accreditation. People may have bought millions of copies but the reviews speak the truth. Bad Co. 2 is superior to Black Ops face it. As for Crisis 2, it really is shaping up to be epic and once people realize how amazing the game is they will buy it, me included.
It's Treyarch. They're still having a hard time copying MW success.
because cod isnt a serious shooter its fun to play with ya mates and more arcadey
Not going to happen. CoD dominates based on name recognition. Their 'goal' is possible in theory, but in execution it is simply not going to happen. Why? Regardless of the scores, people like to play it safe. Even Halo isn't as popular as CoD, and Halo fans are absolutely rabid. Crytek can do what they want, but aspiring to be as popular as Call of Duty is ridiculous.
Peace.
Good luck with that, Crytek.
Just put your skill where your mouth is.
Yea but hopefully by the time 2018 hits this weird trend where the market is flooded by over-hyped carbon copy FPS's will be long gone and we can get back to having more than wide variety of genres with many quality games to choose from… *cough* RPGs *cough*
*thumbs up*
However I think we have to realize that shooters, being it off- or online, first- or third person, will totally dominate for many years to come.
After spending some time playing black ops, I personally don't think it's very pretty. Textures look stretched and their character models look like most suffered from horrible acne. I think crysis can easily topple cod in many aspects, but that says very little. Its like something taking the crown away from gta.. cod will have to suffer as a series in order to be taken down.
Update: so it seems I had some sort of a glitch? Game day 2 and the games graphics are much more smooth. odd.. I don't understand what happened. It's pretty enough, now… I know it ran the right resolution (tv displays prompt of resolution once it changes) but nothing looks as stretched out as they did the first time I ran the game…
Crysis Future Warefare and Crysis White-ops coming soon.
Why do these devs not realize that gamers love being a "normal soldier?" The super suits are ok, but the online suffers because people can't relate to it.
Speak for yourself, mistah. Being a "normal soldier" is just plain boring imo. I vote yes to fantastic stories and imaginary worlds.

Crysis who?
*waits for Uncharted 3*
just hope crysis 2 has not been "consoleized".
crysis was and still is the PC gaming benchmark, it took years for a card to come out that could run it everything maxed out!
so i have the exact same expectations for crysis 2, this better be the impression crysis was, this better be the best looking game since solid gold otherwise crytek are going to have allot of pitchforks and flaming torches to answer to!
rumor going around that its going to be delayed so they can add extreme tessellation to it.
nvidia just spent 2M pounds to crytek, so everyone assumes it was for a little more than advertising.
there releasing there 580s soon, the worlds most powerful single card!
so, there going to want crytek optimizing the game for that, making sure people get the decent performance boost over the 480 otherwise theres going to be allot of unhappy customers!
