Sony Sends Over A Half-Million GT5 Copies To France?

Another day, another obligatory Gran Turismo 5 update.

The more we see and hear, the more it becomes likely that a new release date will be finalized this week. Firstly, several sources are reporting that Sony will provide everyone with a new launch date in only a few days time. Secondly, the Sony Style store still gives GT5 an approximate "on or about November 30" date, which goes along with a few other retailer expectations. Thirdly and finally, we now hear from a European source that Sony has shipped – or is planning to ship – 550,000 copies of the hotly anticipated game…to France alone. That's 450k of the standard version, 100k of the Collector's, and 5k of the Signature edition, and if we understand the translation correctly, the implication is that the delay was so Sony could really flood the market with copies. By comparison (again, if we're understanding correctly), Activision intends to send/sell 650,000 copies to France, which is merely 100k more than GT5. Of course, GT has always been super crazy popular in Europe so perhaps that isn't a big surprise.

Okay, so maybe it's only a matter of days. And when that date finally shows up at our doorstep, all the anxiety and fear will end…you know, provided it really is coming out this year.

I hope they flood Europe with GT5 copies… When GT4 came out, 2 stores near my house were out of stock on day one and i had to search quite a bit to find a copy…

What concerns me is that the discs are printed and apparently shipped, but Sony hasnt said anything about the date. What are they waiting for? At this point nobody really cares about what the date is, we all just want to know so we can plan around other game purchases.

They are waiting for the new software update ,I think ,for the ps3 to be released
because the main reason for delaying the game is the security thing ,hackers of the Ps3 did only bring us problems

BTW NoSmokingBandit I did see the link you gave me to the GT5 Editions, I wanted it right away but I was spending too much in 1 other game so… have to get the regular.

BTW Was there going to be a new software update anyways or did polyphony made Sony release an update?

Sony could release the update at whatever time they want, you have to remember that it will be included on disc regardless.

Killa Tequila,
The update is at Sony's discretion and appears to be primarily related to security concerns. In short, yes, it wasn't planned until extremely late in GT5's production schedule, which resulted in last minute changes to the code.

Considering this is going to be update 3.50, I would expect something more to be added than just security though.
Peace.

Maybe they plan on a huge FW update along with GT5 in order to push the game. Cross game chat perhaps? Theres really no other exclusives this fall so if they can make everything hit at once it should sell quite a few PS3s this holiday.

That is a ridiculous number of units… But, it isn't out of the realms of possibility. I mean, GT is, beyond all other titles, Sony's flagship franchise. That, combined with the serious amount of hype that has built up since its initial unveil will sweep away all competitors on a tide of sales unseen since Black Ops two weeks before. If this is true, and if Jelopnik was telling the truth, then we can feasibly expect Sony to be intentionally holding off on a release date to really build the last minute hype. Keep people guessing as to the release date and when it is finally given, and written in for a little over a week away, you can believe that the hype machine will explode.

Seriously, this is the only way for Sony to play it. They cannot afford the slowburn hype offered by even three weeks. That will result in disappointment. It needs to be here, NOW.
Peace.

Didnt the followers of this game create enough hype just by anticipating the release date when ever a news update shows up?
I think a a lot loyal PS3 owners will go ahead and buy this game when ever it will be released beside the huge number of pre-oders
beside that there is no such a game will be released on any game console that can provide what Gran Turismo does , Simulation Driving , the only game that was close enough for that was Froza and by now after one year of releasing that game people will still look for something new , and also we can consider that Gran Turismo 5 may have a long time span of steady sales since a lot of people will be looking to other interesting games like Black Ops but still the believe in the realisms and the originality of Gran Turismo and with no any other replacement the have to buy it

Of course the game has already been hyped beyond the stratosphere by the unofficial delays, and of course it is one of the most coveted games of the year, but an immediate release date would be better than one a couple of weeks away. Why you ask? Well, in that case, Sony can focus their entire advertising budget for the title over the span of one week. This will result in an epic amount of ads for GT5, while spreading it over three weeks would reduce both the immediacy and the impact. At least, that's the way that it seems to me.

Although I do agree that there will be a huge immediate pick-up on the title, easily outstripping any other PS3 exclusive (4-5 million units by the end of the year?), but there will also continue to be a slow burn. GT is the kind of title that can, literally, last a player years, and I would expect people to continue adopting it until the hype machine for GT6 kicks into high gear. Lifetime sales in excess of ten million? It's a distinct possibility.
Peace.

Cool, I guess… it would make sense to produce numbers in their initial shipping of the game. It would also sort of explain why a set date hasn't been determined. what has changed since gt5p released is the vast number of new ps3 owners, world wide. So taking into consideration the additional copies needed and the limitation of how much can be produced and shipped, I'd imagine some shortage counter measure may be put in place.

Still. Its been almost half a decade. Why would market flooding suddenly be a new priority that wasn't enacted upon at the beginning of this year rather than now…?

GT5 is coming, and soon!
This is great and every copy is going to be sold on launch day. I Preordered my Collector's edition back in July, so I'll be safe(playing on day one.
They does need to be millions of copies on launch day, Sony's best game won't last long on store shelves. I'm sure people are going with out GT5 for a few weeks.
You should of preordered.

Amazon sent me a notification that the publisher had given them a date of Dec 31st – take that anyway you care to, I take it with a large pinch of salt.

I'm still wondering whether Sony might be trying to pull the wool over our eyes and is about to announce a shipping date of Nov 23rd (in the US). It would fit with a 3 week delay to the original date, and announcing this coming week gives a two week lead time for even more pre-orders and then a Holiday (in the US) weekend immediately after launch.

It would really steal the thunder of more than a few others.

I think that a Nov. 23rd date is very likely, just by my reasoning above, and also that the blokes at JB said that it would be releasing on the 26th here in Australia. The 31st of December is obviously a placeholder, and if not, then it is pure foolishness on the part of Sony. Fingers crossed that we aren't let down.
Peace.

it wont be the 31/12/10 every time they have that date in it means this year but god knows when this year.
game do that all the time when there not sure when a games going to release.

i doubt it will be the 26th here thats a Friday games have never released on a Friday, from memory the last game that was set for Friday was ninja gaiden sigma but than it ended up releasing a day early.
a couple of online retailers are saying the 15th of December.
thats much more likely, some games do release on Wednesdays, actually if memory serves me well GOW3 released on a Wednesday.

I was told by my local Gamestop store manager that the reason Gran Turismo 5 was delayed was because of a software exploit that was caught during final product testing. It had to do with older PS3 models that don't always take new firmware updates properly. According to the store manager, you could install the entire game onto the HDD and not need the disc to play the game. So in truth, the game was already stamped once and packaged for shipment when they had to write in a fix, which only took a couple of days, but they had to destroy the already stamped copies and stamp new discs with the security patch added. There were supposedly also reports late last month of there being shortages of dual-layer Blu-Ray discs. This could very well could have been if they had to pitch out millions of the discs that were already stamped. Take my info as you wish, but this sounds to me to be as plausible of a theory as any that anyone else has come up with to date has been.

I received an e-mail from NCS, a well-known import online videogame retailer based out of NYC that also sells U.S. games, on Friday that claims GT5 has been confirmed for a Nov. 30 release, whether that is for the U.S. or Japan I don’t know.

We know it's called preordering, and wait, don't explain- we know what it is too, nobody asked you.

Preordering still does not resolve the problem of shortage of supply, now does it? No one asked you how to sleeze your way in life.

We are talking about enough GT5 for EVERYONE. Understand? Not how to outsmart everyone, but a concern about everyone.

You make me sick.
