As time goes on, video games appeal more and more to females. And according to design guru Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski, one game that needed to be marketed towards ladies was Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain .
One of the minds behind Gears of War spoke to Irrational Games boss Ken Levine and during that interview , they somehow stumbled upon the topic of the innovative PlayStation 3 exclusive. CliffyB has never been known to be diplomatic when it comes to his comments so we're not surprised at a comment like, "they love two things in life: queso dip and true crime." But his reasoning might be sound, simply because Heavy Rain is a mature, well-written, story featuring a devoted father, a strong female character, and a certain darkness that – I must agree with Cliffy here – seems to attract women these days. Said CliffyB:
"I hate to sound misogynistic but it feels like such a great game for a girl who wouldn't normally play games. Because women love true crime! I don't know what it is. I've said it before – they love two things in life: queso dip and true crime.
"Y'know, you'd see Heavy Rain advertised in PlayStation Magazine and things like that. I'm like, dude, why isn't this in Entertainment Weekly? Why aren't you marketing this to the right crowd? There were scenes were I was almost literally dropping the controller it was paced so well. If you had that and shipped a disc with all those women's magazines you'd maybe have sold twice as much."
Before you make assumptions, we're pretty sure we've heard Bleszinski praise Heavy Rain in the past, and it's obvious he has played it. Love or hate Gears , the guy knows what a great game is, and there is some truth to what he says. I think somewhere in the Comments of our review , someone mentioned how the game could really appeal to wives and girlfriends and I replied that I hadn't thought of it, but it was certainly possible and maybe even likely.
Heavy Rain has sold extraordinarily well for a new, revolutionary, not-based-on-guns IP but maybe it could do even better than 1.5 million if Sony involved the ladies…
