Next Final Fantasy MMO Not On PS3?

This oughta fuel rumors about just how diverse Square-Enix is going to get in the next generation. Of course, it's the format of the game in question that makes the difference, but still…

We all remember Final Fantasy XI , the MMO set in the FF universe that turned plenty of heads. It enjoyed decent success on the PS2 in the U.S. and especially in Japan, so another FF MMO was expected to be in the works. What wasn't expected, however, was the possibility that the next one might not make it to the PS3. This may sound odd, especially considering that the publisher is keeping the main installments in the series ( Final Fantasy XIII , for example) exclusive to the PS3. But at the same time, this is an online-only game, which means Live is apparently their program of choice.

According to a recent quote by Final Fantasy III remake producer Hiromichi Tanaka made during an interview with Pro-G , the PS3 is a "possibility," but not definite, like the 360 and PC.

"I'm still working on XI as it's on-going but we are also working on a next-generation MMORPG for 360 and Vista but PS3 is a possibility."

We were under the impression that the PlayStation Network was fully functional, despite lacking a few of the cosmetic perks offered by Live. But perhaps there's another reason behind this….we'll just have to keep an eye out, and hope more details surface soon.
