Crytek UK Seeking Publisher For New TimeSplitters

Just a quick history lesson: Free Radical made the TimeSplitters games, which earned widespread critical acclaim and generated legions of avid followers. But the developer also made Haze , which meant they basically went bye-bye, and Crytek saved them. After doing so, the new studio became known as Crytek UK. The latter will deliver Crysis 2 at some point and we're finally hearing talk about a new TimeSplitters .

It had been rumored – or perhaps even confirmed – that Free Radical had been working on the fourth TS installment when they were forced to close their doors. When they became part of Crytek, they were obliged to work on Crysis 2 but now that that project is nearly done, it seems they're looking for publishers willing to put out a new TimeSplitters . During the GameCity festival at Nottingham last week, Crytek managing director Karl Hilton said:

"We're talking to publishers at the moment about whether that's [TimeSplitters] a viable route or not. There hasn't been a TimeSplitters game for quite a while. Obviously TimeSplitters is a FPS with a strong multiplayer element. The question is, is that the way to go with another one, or should it go down a different route, or should we be developing a new IP altogether?"

He says if they find a publisher who wants to adopt the project, Crytek would be "happy to do one." But it's still very much up in the air right now, as they're willing to be flexible; i.e., "whether the TS is like the classic TS or whether the TS is a new imagined TS," will be part of the publisher hunting process. So how are publishers responding thus far? Well, everyone knows the name "TimeSplitters" and Hilton says depending on who you talk to, "they either look at it as a really successful product or as a product that was almost successful but could have done better."

He did add that if they do happen to make another TS, the style might have to change. He said it was "very British" with its sense of humor and these days, that's "too niche" and it doesn't work. So they would need to create a new "characteristic and personality." Lastly, Hilton added:

"TS had a very high profile within the industry, among press and game developers and publishers. That's great. And certainly within our team there's phenomenal enthusiasm for it and we'd love to do another one. But everyone realises it's a hard commercial climate out there, so you've got to do something that's commercial but still has integrity. That's the balance you're going to have to find.

But yeah, we'd love to do it. We don't want to get self-indulgent with it. We want to produce something that speaks to a lot of people and a lot of people play. That's the best thing: when you make a game and it sells a lot of units, not from a financial view, but because it's great to see your product out there that people are enjoying it and playing it."

Sweet, I loved the series on PS2 and would by that over Crisis if the original team is doing it. I'd buy a HD remake off PSN of TS 2 in a heartbeat.

Never got into the series at all. Would pay attention to it if Crytek is running it though.

EA is not willing to publish this game?

That's what I'm thinking too. I would have though this would be a non-issue, they're the ones that published TS:Future Perfect plus Crytek seems to be publishing everything through EA as of late.

Finally! The TimeSplitters series was my favourite of last generation. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect had, in my opinion, the best offline multiplayer experience last generation had to offer. My friends and I still play the Arcade mode regularly, despite the fact that we have some great offline multiplayer titles on our PS3s. The Mapmaker was also pretty awesome.

Same here! Offline multiplayer was the best in this series. I cannot wait for the old Free Radical team to make this! I am a little worried about the idea of changing the humor though ….

Yeah, one thing Future Perfect did still strive on was multiplayer. However, the story co-op was pretty disgraceful that time around.

@Lemon_Saint
Yeah, I hope they don't try to "reboot" the series. I really like its gameplay and overall style; and its humour too, to be honest.

@Lotusflow3r
The story coop wasn't anything amazing, although I still thought it was worth playing. I may be slightly biased, though. xD

Wahey, Notts, my home town.

The 1st two were brill!

Then publishers stepped in and commercialised it too much….it became too generic with Future Perfect.
…and look what this guy said about it being niche and too British…..is he for real?

I guess Free Radical, even though still physically here, sold their soul to Crytek.

Ah well, i'll be optimistic for now.

A true next gen TimeSplitters would be great. I just hope the right people get the project or we're going to be sorely disappointed.

Agree with Alienage if it is changed too much and doesn't feel like the old TS it's not going to do too well. The same humor and style should be there just updated graphics and the such. Companies now a days i.e. Capcom and SE try to market to a new crowd and change the game so much it alienates all the original fans who supported the series. Every thing has to be mass market commercialized garbage now a days or publishers won't publish it. New IPs are one thing but when u have a million + record with a solid following it should be a no brainer. I need a game company, who has some capital?

TimeSplitters is one of my favorite games. Whoever gets this better keep the multiplayer intact and keep all the funny characters available.

PLEASE make this happen! There has been a frustrating lack of offline multiplayer games this generation and this would make it so much better! We still have friends game developers! There's nothing better then playing a multiplayer game with a bunch of mates while trash talking.

And if they do end up making this, I hope they don't go the "realism route". One of the best things about Timesplitters was how insanely fast and easy to play it was.

I know Crytek can make a solid game, but can they make an overwhelmingly fun one?

Truer words have never been said.
