Local Campaign Co-Op Returns In Resistance 3

You know, I had a lot of fun going through the Resistance: Fall of Man campaign with a friend. Too bad I couldn't do it with the sequel.

Resistance 2 featured an 8-player co-op mode that was sort of unique and plenty entertaining, but it didn't boast a real story and it wasn't a fantastic substitute for the regular campaign co-op. But thanks to this month's big Resistance 3 feature in Game Informer, we've learned that standard local campaign co-op will return in the new installment. A reader turned us onto this fact, and we've also found out that the aforementioned 8-player co-op is gonna disappear…and we can live with that. The campaign co-op will also feature two playable characters (Capelli or Harper), and both local and online co-op should be allowed. Although large-scope online multiplayer matches in shooters have become the norm this generation, nothing quite beats sitting down with a friend and going through a story-driven adventure. David Jaffe agrees with this assessment, by the way, as do many other veteran gamers and designers.

So if you know someone who will go through R3 with you, let 'em know. They'll have to wait a bit but at least the option will be there.

It better!

The original implemented this so well, really fun.

Sweet. Loved having this in the first game, and seeing it again will be good. I wonder though, whether this will mean that Harper plays such a large role in this sequel that it'll be almos like two-player all the time. If I remember correctly, Player 2 in Fall of Man was some random dark-skinned fella.

Gimme a date and make me happy.
Peace.

Nice but I'm curious about the local-online-multiplayer capabilities that were in the 2nd one. To clarify I'm talking about how you and a friend could both play online vs from the same console. I really liked that feature!

Yeah definitely glad they are bringing that back. It was sweet doing the campaign with my bro and with friends.
Can't wait.

Better question: Are they gonna go back to expand on the awesome multiplayer from R1? Or are they going to stick with the s*** formula that produced the multiplayer for R2?

I hate R2. I ranted about it many times 2 years ago. I feel like that game failed on almost every level. I will not apologize for that.

Multiplayer doesn't really matter

As long as the campaign is really good it really doesn't matter. Uncharted 2 is a great example of that. Killzone 2 as well.

I'm with you all the way on this one Shadow. When the first game has great multiplayer you'd naturally expect the second one to improve on the formula. Alas that is not what we got with R2. The co-op was just ok and the rest was forgettable.

@ Scarecrow – How can one of your comments say "It better!" and the next one be "Multiplayer doesn't really matter?"

Yeah, I hate to admit it..as much as I loved the single player campaign in R2…I would still pick R1 over R2 for fun factor. That fact that they are bringing back a split screen Co-op mode for R3 makes me wonder if perhaps you won't be able to also do a 1-4 player co-op campaign mode as well. (which, if that is the case, Frost, Mackid, Deadman, Viper and Turbey…Set your calendar's for D1P on this one…)

The biggest part of this game that I'm wondering about is what are they going to do about Hale? Everyone wants him in the 3rd installment, but there's been no hints as to how that would happen. The only thing I can think of is the *****SPOILER ALERT****** ending. Where Hale said, "Isn't it beautiful?" and, "This is just the beginning." (or something like that, it's been a while since I played) It's the exact same words that Daedulus said….makes me think that we're going to see Hale in R3 in one form or another.

Regardless, though few games are D1P's for me and I'm not a huge FPS fan…Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 are at the top of my list of games to get. Thankfully they aren't releasing this fall, because there are already too many other games for me to spend my money on, I don't need these 2 draining my bank account as well….

I think this is gonna be a D1P for me anyway. I've a hardcore love for this series, mostly because R1 was my first FPS to play.

R1 is by far the superior of the two games. I was just playing last week with Viper both online games (R1 and R2).

We couldn't get a match other then co-op in R2 as there was no-one still playing the online.

We tried a couple of days later playing R1 and not only were we able to find matches but they were all full to capacity.
Even when Viper created his own game, it wasn't long before there were people logging in to join.
I think it's a universal acknowledgement that R1 is far superior. I hadn't played it in so long so when I seen how good the game looked last week, even comparing it to R2 which also still looks good, it was just great to be back playing in that alternate world war setting again.
I just got to say though, although R1 is much better then R2, I don't think it'd be fair to call R2 a bad game. It's just not a great game when compared to it's predecessor.

I like the story campaign co-op, but I have to say that I enjoyed the alt campaign co-op of R2 more. I wasn't just replaying the same campaign that I had just completed. Also the whole 8 person vs hundreds of enemies was so intense.

"r1 was just replaying the campaign?"… Ehhh… The coop in r2 was nothing but replay the damn circle of maps over and over and over and over again! R2 was the worst excuse of a coop game I've so far played. It was so repetitious that my coop buddies and I threw the game away long before we even reached the third circle of maps. And we *always* complete coop games as a rule.

How to avoid replaying the campaign with a friend is playing the campaign with a friend the first time you play it, of course…!

now I loved the 8 player co-op in R2, in fact it was the best part of that game. That being said I am extremely dissapointed that it is not going to return for R3. However R1's competitive online was the single greatest part of that game and in my oppinion greatly outshined the competitive multiplayer in R2. So if they can bring back the same multiplayer experience from R1 where humans and chimera were very different (humans had radar and were small, chimera had rage mode and were big) and yet very balanced than it might be able to make up for the loss of 8 player co-op

That's awesome news. I LOVED the co-op in R1 and that's the first game my girlfriend actually enjoyed playing with me time and time again. Was a little saddened that it wasn't in R2 but she loved the multiplayer and I'd come home from work to learn she joined a squad and was leveling up all day and now with R3 we get to play together again. She will be so excited as am I because the only other game we play together is Peggle and Peggle nights and it kills me to act like I'm enjoying it just to put a smile on her face. Now we can kill stuff together again.

THANK GOD!
miss the good old days where almost every single game had co-op.
almost every 360 exclusive has it, every wii exclusive ive played has it so god knows why only a select few ps3 exclusives have it!
this gen has really gone backwards, yea games look and sound better than they ever have but at what cost?
there no where near as fun as they use to be!

PoP, R&C, GOW, MGS, splinter cell, RE, DMC, GTA, GH, NG, NFS, burnout, spyro, crash, COD, MoH, looney tunes, FC, battlefield, RF, TC, halo, FF, KH, NRL, hitman, SH, alone in the dark.
all these series were better in either the ps1 or ps2 days, most of those games have been with us since the ps1 era but every ps1 iteration kicks the royal crap out of every ps3 iteration!
GOW for example, the first came out and was so amazing, had such fluid flow from puzzles to combat, to platforming, had a real charm and was so brutal.
than its sequel came out, more of the same and had lots of epic boss battles.
than GOW3 came out and threw everything out the window!
1 and 2 were about pacing, it was not go in and rip everything apart, it was about exploration, scale and breaking up the journey.
GOW3 had none of that, your constantly in the same area so you constantly feel like your repeating the same level.

i wish games would go back to the ways of the good old days.
go back to making games focused on gameplay, not graphics.
that is what makes games like saints row, fallout and just cause so much fun!
yes they are buggy, yes they have poor graphics, yes there not very realistic BUT WHO CARES!!!!!!!!
i dont play games to get a life simulation, i play games to have fun and escape reality!

resistance was allot like that, id did not fuss over how big the enemies were, or how many enemies they had on screen, or how good it looked they worried about how fun it was.
i finished the campaign 6 times on my own, and in the tens of times when friends came over because it was the only thing with co-op.
did i ever get bored?
NOPE!
i finished resistance 2 twice, once on hard and once on superhuman and i was bored of it.
twice and i was bored, appose to the 16+ i finished the original and never got bored.

Very good news, i liked R2's online co-op too, but a FPS nowadays should have access to co-op play in the campaign mode.

This is truly deplorable! Bottom line…who do they think they are! Coop players have just as much to do with making RE2 the smash hit it was as multi-player. Words cannot describe how much I fell in love with this component of the game. Being able to work with teammates from across the globe night after night, have clans, master the classes, just fantastic! Yet someone decides "they didn't like the direction". Bottom line, look at the game hours logged under your coop players and realize that we are important to this franchise.

I personally didn't like the first Resistance nearly as much as RE2. Don't get me wrong as I am sure that sediment goes both ways, but you cant just scrap the legions of coop fans who continue to keep this game alive.

WOW, just unbelievable amount of disrespect here. The least they can do is give us purchase options for coop or something. Not to exaggerate, but I am one of RE2 biggest fans, and I am not kidding. I have the comics, the figures, the limited edition everything, the shirts, all things RE2, and its the coop that created this devotion.

Yes I love the campaign, and love the story, but the campaign isn't what keeps a person playing for hours on end. And multi-player…man I am so sick of stupid chaotic multi-player games where you get killed over and over with nothing but messy game-play and just overall crap. But hey, my best friend loves it. Guess what best friend, it appears they are taking that away too!

Oh, and that horrible weapon wheel, the reason I did NOT like the first Resistance. geeze, what is wrong with these people? I loved the ease of switching back and forth with one button. Made the gameplay more fluent and seamless…oh well, lets mess that up too!

They need to reconsider this very seriously! I better stop now before I get too upset!

YES!!! That was a deal breaker for me with R2. I bought the game specifically for local co-op to play through with a friend after we finished the first game. I promptly returned it the next day after discovering that it didn't support the one feature I bought it for.

If co-op campaign comes back for R3 then you can count me in!

I am sad to admit I have never fully played through both R1 and R2.. I know.. you hate me. But this news does give me alot of hope for the future. I have always been able to get more into the story playing with a buddy to get his or her opinion as we progress through the game. my bro in law loves R1 and R2 so im actually excited about this one. Thanks for the update!

Adding co-op to the singleplayer campaign is a great move. Taking out the 8 player co-op, not so much. Oh course, there's the slight chance they've taken it out to make room for something better.

And please don't make the carbine weaksauce this time.
