Insomniac Committed To PS3, To Stick With Resistance

With the new Game Informer featuring Resistance 3 , one had to assume several little nuggets of valuable info would show up on the 'Net.

Perhaps two of the most encouraging details – especially in regards to PlayStation 3 fans and ardent Resistance followers and defenders – came towards the end of the GI feature. As noted by PS3Center , Insomniac has reiterated their desire to keep working exclusively with Sony's machine. They've also hinted that Resistance 4 isn't out of the question, although we assume the retail performance of R3 will go a long way towards determining that possibility. After stressing that they remain a PS3-only company, Insomniac was asked if R3 would be the last in the franchise:

"I don't think so. I think Resistance 3 is a story within the Resistance universe that can be expanded upon. Doors will be shut, but they won't be slammed."

Well, they're introducing a new main character so that alone should allow for a few more story branches in the future. And considering this studio's talent and potential, it's great to hear they want to stick with the PS3. It's the one console that gives them the best chance of realizing their vision(s); or at least, that's what we assume. Anyway, we can't wait to hear more about R3. Game's gonna be bad-ass .

Cool, I'm glad they're committed to the series. I suppose it's safe to assume that they'll continue to tap CELL power with their future games.

Hopefully their continued experience lends itself well to the games they do that are multi-platform. That is, multi-plats that don't come up short on PS3.

@Temjin,

I'm sure this is one developer that will definitely lead their multiplat game on the PS3… unlike Ninja Theory.

I really liked Resistance 1 and 2, especially because this was one of the first games that supported 64 players on multiplayer. Remembered my first time playing this at my friends house.

They are truley welcomed to stick with the PS3.

I'm starting to question whether humanity can come back from the brink that they have clearly been pushed to. Will we be fighting a doomed battle in future games?

It sounds like the battle is fairly doomed in R3, since humanity only exists in tiny secret pockets scattered about.

True. I also wonder if we'll ever find out about the excavated towers…

Can't wait for their next game, if they can release a stellar game every year, imagine the next one when they're not releasing a game in 2010.

If they keep making them I'll keep buying them. Resistance and Killzone are the only FPS this generation that I've liked. Does anyone remember Area 51 on xbox1? That was awesome, wish someone would do a new one.

I'm waiting for my video out cable to arrive to play Resistance Retribution so I can play it with the DS3 and on the big screen. Maybe Insomniac should look into a PS3 3rd person Resistance if R3 sells well.

They came out with an sequal to area 51, it was called blacksite. It didnt get good review though.

resistance and resistance 2 were… underwhelming. bosses weren't frightening, firefights weren't intense… but man, those grims were a whole nuther story!
but im gunna watch this one. they may get it right this time

They got it right the other 2 times.

Not sure what game you were playing but R:FoM was awesome! Second one was good too but it lacked something compared to the first. Either way I have no doubt 3 will be just as amazing.

I found the greyjacks more frightening than the grims, particularly when you come into that room and there's about ten of them in tubes… I got murdered so many times.

Blowing their heads of with a shotty, very satisfying. R:FoM was the superior game but R2 is still a gnarly game!

I have a feeling R3 will sell incredibly well. R:FoM didnt sell well because nobody had a ps3 back then, and they made a lot of odd choices with R2, but they are the kind of guys who are smart enough to not make the same mistake twice. I feel like R3 is going to have all of the great things from FoM and 2, making quite a great game. I'm a little sad they didnt announce it for this fall, but whenever it drops it should make quite some noise.

The child in me just screamed YAY!!!! I love this franchise and want too see as many resistance titles as insomaniac can dish out. Just one thing that irritates me about resistance is how insomaniac doesn't push far with resistance's graphics. I don't expect insomaniac to make a title with killzone type graphics, but the thought of sniping a chimera in killzone 2 graphics is just bada**.(especially since the single player campaign takes place in huge cities)

now this is good news. once again, insomniac not selling out. they will always be respected in my book. 🙂 oh yeah, @ charger7302, insomniac is not taking the graphics from Killzone 2 (to a point kind of,) but either way, they're both exclusive so they're all on the same team, different devs. 8)

I know they aren't but i wish they would. Resistance needs the kind of polish killzone 2 got(not saying that killzone 2 is superior too resistance2, in my book resistance 2 is better in every way except for graphics)

I'd like to see them create a new IP and definitely one that isn't a FPS. Gawd I hate console FPS…especially seeing talent wasted on a game genre I'll never play.

It's not wasted for everyone, you know.

bigrailer19

So because you won't play it, they are wasting talent? Hmm, why does that comment not surprise me?!

It would be nice to see them branch out eventually, but in regards to R3, the fans are excited!

Sorry guys but when it comes to my entertainment the thought of others being entertained doesn't offer the same excitement and joy that sitting down and playing a game I want to play does.

So yes, I'm flat out being selfish. It would be one thing if it was a developer I've never enjoyed games from before in the past but I like Insomniac and I have the same feeling I'd have if James Cameron was coming out with a Dawson's Creek movie.

Don't know…I never saw it and at the time I didn't mind its release since I was still a youngin and too busy chasing tail and playing FF7/RE/TombRaider.

..and yes I know you were trying to crack a joke and we both know you've seen the movie and own it in multiple forms.

LV, their EA project is supposed to be a new IP, is it not? Given the creativity in their studios, I seriously doubt that Insomniac would be looking to do another FPS, regardless of the sales they might achieve.

Also, as others have said… not wasting their talents, merely taking them in a different direction.
Peace.

Wait, I'm a bit confused about this. According to John, Insomniac says in GI, that they remain a "ps3-only company". Wouldn't that imply the multiplatform project with EA got canned or has become exclusive to ps3 (which would defeat the purpose of going with EA instead of Sony for it)? I'd assume otherwise, and that they are no longer "ps3-only", though the exclusive Sony franchises are still on track.

Lawless SXE
Lawless SXE

Actually Shams, that is a good point, and I'm slightly confused by that. But then, they have a contract with EA do they not, thus necessitating the creation, or completion of that project. This is what makes me think it will be a port to 360, with an EA team handling it.

Oh, and just to be involved, Titanic was not a Dawson's Creek movie. It had a giant ship that sunk, and nudity…
Peace.

Brief nudity of a chubby ginger does not make for yummy….and the entire movie revolves around a poor nobody getting busy with a high-class bimbo. That sure sounds like Dawson's Creek to me.

Heh, I never saw Dawson's Creek. Also, I liked the tragic romance tale of Titanic. It played a nice contrast to the epic tragedy of, well… Titanic.

Nice catch, Lawless. That alternative makes sense as EA has handled ports before, like in the case of The Orange Box for Valve.

I guess i was under the impression since the beginning of this year that based on Ted Price's comments and Insomniac having opened their 3 story office building in NC, their intention was to do multiplatform development themselves.

Being a longtime gamer I remember how in the late 90's how developers weren't really committed to really producing sequels, but was more interested in putting out bigger and better stuff(hence why certain franchises continue to remain dormant).

Looking to the 2000's it seem to me that the video game industry have picked up hollyoowd's bad habit of overdosing on sequels, the very habit that hollywood have been chastised about.

Looking back at the game industry, it doesn't suprise that industry have managed to find iself on the same fruitless path as hollywood. Then again it doesn't suprise me that even mainstream media have been taking notice and have began to chastise game game industry its business practices e.g. lack of innovation, high game budgets and overreliance on sequel as examplified in this accurate article pennedy by Evan Van Zelfden of Slate:

Brilliant. I really hope that they continue making the Resistance brand into the PS4 generation, I just love the games that much. I would also love to see another PSP spin-off to further exapnd the mythology. Also, it's good to hear that there is potentially already ideas floating around for Resistance 4, as that really gives them a lot more time to flesh out the story and perhaps future direction for the series. I complain about sequelisation a lot, but I will make exceptions for Resistance, Uncharted and few other IPs.

Judging by the above comment, I'm guessing that they're project with EA is going to be developed on the PS3, then ported over? That is something I would love to see, as games that are developed that way seem to run better on both consoles. Use Burnout: Paradise and DMC4 as examples. Either way, I know it's going to be good, but I wish that we could at least find out a genre.
Peace.

P.S. Ben, when is the Insomniac interview being published… Or has it already been and I missed it?

the gameplay looks absolutley freaking SWEET!
the chimera in some of the GI pics looks so freaking cool!
the AI, and cover mechanics, return of co-op, return of weapon wheel.
this is turning up to be the sequel resistance 2 should of been!

story wise……………. oh dear!
short and sweet, why has the human race turned into a bunch of pansies!?
ok, yes, your outnumbered, out gunned, but how is hiding going to fix that?
story wise this is shaping up to be a bigger disappointment than resi 5!!!!!!!!!

Lawless SXE
Lawless SXE

Place the story into a realistic context… I seriously doubt, that were the human race decimated, many of us would be willing to get off of our azzes and shoot a bunch of uglies for no purpose. It would be utterly hopeless, consequently demoralising, and as a result, pretty much exactly what Resistance 3 sounds like so far to me.
Peace.

i kno, i kno but your thinking of it as real life, its a game.
wheres the enjoyment of hiding?
war is about fighting against immense odds, being a man and fighting to the death.
tis better to go out with a bang, than go out with a whimper.
the earth is being taken over by chimera, how is hiding going to solve that?
is it better to live in a world of tranquility but at the cost of freedom, or is it better to live in freedom but the world be in ruins?

its so cliche too, i mean how many games have we had where a father was ex military or something is retired but now goes back to save a loved one?
honestly, that has to be one of the most over done storys in the history of not just video games, but the whole entertainment industry!

Lawless SXE
Lawless SXE

I'm just thinking logically here, as I have this peculiar notion that the world needs to make sense, and having an annhilated human race fighting back against impossible odds is not logical.

I agree that it is overdone and cliche, but if Insomniac manages to get it right (and I trust them to do so), I certainly won't be complaining.
Peace.

Let's hope the game is bad-ass. I think what plagues exclusive FPS on the PS3 is the lack of consistency. They're always changing and apparently don't have a working formula just yet.

I just wonder if Insomniac will make new Ip's for Sony, or if they will just continue to make the ones they previously came up with or existing Sony franchises?
