Kojima “Throwing Out The Old Ways” For Next Project

Hideo Kojima has been busy with the Tweeting recently. After making an interesting comparison between Western and Eastern development styles, he has moved on to talk a bit about his next project…whatever that may be.

As a follow-up to his first set of statements concerning design, Kojima now says he wants his team to "throw out the old ways of production." But don't freak out; this isn't the dreaded Japanese company attempt to "go Western;" it's more about an artistry choice. You can check Siliconera for an assembly of Kojima's recent personal Tweets; here's what he had to say about creating a "beautiful world:"

"For my next project, I’m going to mention to the staff to throw out the old ways of production. Do not create pretty images, create a beautiful world. Designers shouldn’t focus only on their part, but also borrow the programmer’s strength to maximize the quality. We shouldn’t measure quality by parts, we will measure by the quality and completion of the entire world."

You know, if you think about it, we really do remember the "pretty images" from MGS4 but we don't necessarily recall epic vistas. In fact, I can recall minute details of the characters, choreography and special effects, but I don't recall too many of the game's settings and environments. It appears Kojima has noticed this as well and wishes to give his next project more of a sweeping, memorable landscape.

But what is that project? Well, it isn't Metal Gear Solid: Rising . Added Kojima:

"Had our first meeting for the next “A HIDEO KOJIMA GAME” with the core team members today. Some member are also participating on [Metal Gear Solid] “RISING” so 10 people total this time. We will have a meeting every morning to discuss planning, testing, research, and scouting. An open environment to talk about important issues and share our dreams and concept for the project."

Kojima has spoken about Rising as "passing the torch to a younger crowd," so-to-speak, and he's more of a producer than a lead designer, as he usually is with his projects. Here, he's talking about his next game, and…well, maybe it's the oft-promised Zone of the Enders 3 . Or just a true-blue MGS6. Who knows? We just know we need to hear more about it.

..and this sounds related to what he said the other day about western and eastern design approaches. It looks like he's going to adopt his so-called "western" way of design philosophy for future projects.

I remember MGS4;s settings quite well. There were only 5 of them:
the Middle-East, South America, England, Shadow Moses, and the navel ship.

The Shadow Moses environment was phenomenally well done. A true love letter to the fans, and a brilliant level for everyone else.
Peace.

That's exactly his point, there are not to many "ow shit, look at that" moments. If you take Uncharted, you walk around and are truly amazed by the many statues and backgrounds like mountains and so on.

Als Red Dead was full of amazing settings, the overall world is much more live.

Temjin, the third place was in Prague (I think, it was one of hose Eastern Europe countries), not England.

Revisiting Shadow Moses, seeing how dilapidated it was, coupled with the song that played, made me cry.

They could slap kojima's name on that old ET game and I'd buy. I may cut off my thumbs and gouge my eyes later but I'd still buy it.

I'm not worried, it's not like his game is either Japan-ish or American-ish in the first place.
Find an MGS clone and I'll find you a chick with 4 boobs.

I'd say Syphon Filter or Splinter Cell but Ben would slap me. I can spot you 3 boobs on Total Recall though.

I think both SF and SC wanted to be MGS clones at first but ended up being very different creatures in their own ways.

Lol, funny how in the game Snake couldn't reproduce or be cloned and in the real world its hard to find a "Clone" of MGS.

Yea, funny indeed.

But he can get cloned actually, that's why he get old quick and die fast so no one can get their hands on Snake.

That would sound pretty vague to most people, but I think I know what he means. The problem is, it sounds like the idea for the project doesn't even exist yet. I don't think HE knows what it is, so he can't tell us.

I do think it is an original though, not a sequel to anything. Maybe he can be inspired by Last Guardian to create his "world".

"Or just a true-blue MGS6." Is MGS: Peace Walker officially MGS5 now? If not, it might as well be.

I think this sounds like how Santa Monica built the GoW games. If you watch the behind the scenes videos you see how the artists and programmers work closely together to make a better production. I think it really helps in the end. Also, the GoW games really feel like complete worlds–and a complete world overall throughout the series–instead of different levels making up the world.

Know that you mention it GoW ALWAYS had something going on in the background.

That's one of the reasons GoWIII was something of a let down, not much for backgrounds and vistas like in I and II.

Yeah, Poseidon was awesome but III didn't have anything on the Steeds of Time from II.

Yes World, close quarters… there were some epic sequences, but much of it was quite closed in.

We shouldn’t measure quality by parts, we will measure by the quality and completion of the entire world." — This is the golden word for this entire generation. Amen….

At first, I thought that maybe he was thinking of doing an open world game, but after reading the comments, it seems to make more sense. He's aiming for cohesion in the settings of the world, and perhaps making it unique. I'd hate to see him take the drab, grey-brown route of so many developers nowadays, but nor do I necessarily want to see him make his 'world' uniform. I really liked the numerous different environments of MGS4.

As for the new game, I'd say he knows more or less where he wants to go with, and the way he's talking I'm guessing that it's either going to be ZoE3, or a new IP. Speaking of, I was thinking today about MGS:Rising (don't ask me why because I couldn't tell you), and I realised that I don't mind it being canon. I would actually like to see his young team strike out and expand the universe through the eyes of a variety of different characters at points in time of the series between what we already have: example Ocelot between MGS3 and 1. Just a thought.
Peace.

hope its that "taboo" title hes been talking about.
ive developed such a craving for things weird and different ever since i finished heavy rain.
sick of playing the same games over and over again, we need a few games to break away from the convention and create a new genre if you will.

here here. Catherine has got me so pumped, it's my most anticipated game right now I think. Kojima behind a similar effort would be heaven. He can really push the envelope.

Whoa MGS6 O.o? I personally haven't seen a 5, but ok =P

And if anyone says to me "MGS5 was MGS:PW Vic", it is, but only spiritually, not officially.
