It's our view that most critics didn't quite "get" Medal of Honor , in that they missed the big picture and if players want a taste of the real war on terror, EA's latest production is actually quite authentic.
We're always interested to hear what real servicemen have to say about the ongoing Medal of Honor /Taliban controversy, which is why we read Ex-SAS Operative turned author Chris Ryan's comments with interest. Ryan, who has written a prequel novel to go along with the game's launch, talks about the realism in the game, which he tries to recreate with his writing. "Visually, and the sounds, it is very realistic and you can tell that they've had ex-Special Forces members helping them produce the game…" And although he agrees that such matters should be dealt with carefully and sensibly – this is a modern-day conflict, after all – he reminds us that those risking their lives on a daily basis are "very different" than the armchair quarterbacks at home. Said Ryan:
"There's always going to be controversy when you're talking about something that is actually happening in real-time. All I can say is this game is very realistic, right from when I was a child I used to watch war movies. Some of the most famous movies that are out there are war movies. Take Hurt Locker, which is a recent movie that was set in Iraq which is very current.
Now my brother is the Regimental Sergeant Major of 2 Para. He's about to deploy on an operation out in Afghanistan. I would not get involved with anything that wouldn't pay tribute to our brave servicemen. These guys are going out there, men and women, risking their lives on a daily basis. This is entertainment. Now let's get these boxes straight."
Ryan finished by saying he thinks it's "human nature" that people want to be involved with war stories and gaming, because it's still "escapism" in some respects. And in the end, Medal of Honor is about putting yourself in the position of a soldier, which most people don't really want to do, but they wouldn't mind trying it when the risks (like death) aren't involved.

good that they have a ex sas guy helping them out with realism ive only played the beta so i dont really know how realistic it is…. but i do aggree about the escapism…..i play games because i cant be in the position or the character iam playing as and so find it entertaing. MGS is a great example of this.
its a huge improvement over the Beta!! …but then the Beta was really poor.
yeh thats what i heard 🙂
Well Ryan seems to know plenty about war. But I have to question his knowledge of good gaming.
Amen.
Why the thumb downs?
lol yeh
Why the thumbs down? Satanists.
They need to know what you were AMENing about. There is a post above you from Alienange saying questioning ex SAS man Chris Ryan about his knowledge of good gaming.
MOH is a over looked gem. I really enjoyed the game. Plus the multiplayer is very good. Maps on the other hand are somewhat broken. Kunar Base comes to mind. I am glad a real vet praised this game. The ones that gave it a hard time are obviously COD fanboys that wouldnt know quality if it bit them on the behind.
you sir are spot on about the COD fanboys and MOH being an overlooked gem.
This operative's praise just adds another in the plus sided column, along with all of those other "POSITIVE" special forces articles I've added links to here, over the last few months for MOH.
And I expect that list to grow substantially as more & Spec Ops soldiers get to see it too.
ah SAS.. biggest badasses on the planet.
oh well, medal of honor is still 100% bargain bin material!
the sas are super bad ass….i dunno dude i dont think moh looks that bad mp looks solid and sp looks pretty good
It will always be in debate how much realism we want in games. I think if that's what they are going for, it aught to be taken into consideration. Obviously nobody could accomplish all the wild platforming and climbing that Nate Drake does with just his bitty fingertips, but Uncharted is still the sweetest of games.
This site usually stays on top of the aim of a game though.
its a good game, very good.. with a nice bit of (free) DLC and some well thought patches, it could be a great game.
I know I wont be picking up BO when its out next month, I will be too busy playing this and Fallout. that's not to say I wont buy it, but MoH isn't the lifeless poor mans hobby that the trolls will make you believe it is.
Fallout will own my life for some time.
im just thankful its nothing like MoH and will fit nicely along side it.
roll on Friday!
I just beat the campaign last night and really enjoyed it. Played it on hard which wasn't to bad but I thought the story and action were great. Specially loved the ending. I have also started enjoying the online more. It's not the best but it can get better. Hell BC2 was really supported, which has a new expansion coming, so maybe we'll see the same support.
I expected MoH to be something that average a score of 9.
But at least it's not a bad game, maybe I'll wait till the price drop but Killzone 3 might be out by then.
Gimme MW2
I have to say, since MW2 has that barebones mode, ive started playing it again. but to be honest, im just a lil bored of it. im lev 68.5.. i know im so almost there, but the will isnt.
im more likely to buy BO in a few months then finish MW2. this MoH is supplying me that TDM that was lacking in BC2, so im a happy bunny
do u play with any mates dude its alot more fun with em
killzone 2 weapon wilding felt a bit more real like to me
Of course this trained government killer/murderer(what I basically the see the entire US military as) is going to praise the realism, afterall its no fact that the american war machine have been turning to their attension to video games as a new form of training tool. The fact we had a combat simulator n the form of Full Spectrum Warrior even demonstrates this.
Anyhow the mere fact that this ex-SAS operative is promoting the realism of this game just demostrate the fact games like this do nothing but promote militarism.

whats there to get?
its by far the buggiest game I HAVE EVER PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!
honestly, last night i was starting to think someone had screwed up and given me the beta code.
almost every level has glitched out on me, from friendly AI running into walls, to friendly AI refusing to buddy boost you, to at the end the last mission as you kick the door in your suppose to go to a cut scene.
but i did not, i kicked the door in than everything went black and i had full control of my character.
could fire, through grenade, blow myself up, turn NVs on.
by far the buggiest game i have ever played!
forget fallout 3, forget lesuire suit larry box office bust, forget mercenaries 2.
this is the buggiest game in the history of video games!
besides that, it was ok, not great, not as good as MW2 but ok.
a 7/10 i think is more than fair!
i really did like the tactical side to it though, the constant info from your team mates trying to encourage the player to use stealth.
in MW2 you walk up to a group of unsuspecting victims and your team mates and you will run and gun.
but in MoH your team mates always tell you to wait and see if they separate, try and flank them, see if you can pick off one or 2 without anyone noticing so instead of getting into a fire fight with 10 people you can narrow it down to 8.
you really do feel like a soldier, your constantly having to be really careful what situation you put yourself in, you cant run and gun and rely on QQC because you wont last long!
one thing that really bugged me was.
1 your CONSTANTLY using the same weapon mission after mission after mission!
why am i always stuck with the M4?
yea theres AKs and SMGs you can take from your enemies, but they really did not have much of a variety in this game, not like BFBC2 you feel like you have 10 types of each weapon in that!
2 your constantly placed in a situation where you need to snipe but dont have a sniper.
how the %$#@ am i suppose to snipe with a machiene gun?
last time i checked machiene guns make a really bad sniper!
might as well ask me to use a pistol as a sniper, actually no that would be much easier!
3 there is absolutely no recoil in the guns, and GOD DAM they are stupidly accurate.
like the last mission in the game where you get stuck behind the machiene gun.
hes so far away, firing full pelt and constantly keeps getting head shots on me.
as if a machiene gun like that would be that accurate on full auto fire at that distance.
hes sniping with a LMG!
WTF?????????
overall its a ok game, the stealth and tactical side of it really saved the game for me, it really does make you feel like a soldier unlike BFBC or even COD.
those feel like any other shooter, this really makes you feel like your knee deep in warfare.
just the bugs which really spoiled it for me, those and the ridiculously accurate machiene guns!
You know I actually never noticed many problems with the game. There was a few times during the cut scenes that look like it was going to freeze but it never did. When I was playing I never had a problem. Fallout 3 was worst then this game. I had that game freeze up on me many times which made me not finish the DLC.
The game isn't perfect and in some peoples eyes, not mine, can't live up to MW2 which was glitchy as hell. Plus the game still has not been fixed. I will be picking up BO and hopefully it won't end up the same. I do recall Treyarch saying they would do a beta but I guess that won't be happening.
theres no beta for BO, they announced that a while ago.
you were lucky with MoH allot of people have been complaining about it.
MoH is worse though, cant remember which mission but one of the spots where your buddy gives you a boost up he would not get into position, he just kept running into the wall.
threw a grenade at him nothing, shot him nothing, swiped him with my knife nothing, i could not get him to stop running into the wall and get into position to leg me up.
so had to reset the system, and start again luckily it did not happen to me a second time.
fallout 3 was buggy but it was not game breaking, allot of the time it would freeze than un freeze like when friends signed in.
MoH is game breaking because when it does glitch out the only way to fix it is either die or sometimes you dont have control of the character so you have to turn off your system.
now if the last checkpoint was 10 minutes ago, well………
these things are luck of the draw, CLOS another prime example allot of people have had there game saves corrupted by it.
i have not downloaded a single patch, am up to the 3rd chapter now with no problems.
Wow, what system did you play it on? I only ran into 1 issue. That's right, one. In one level I jumped ahead of my squad and entered a room that had absolutely nothing of significance. My squad moved forward and one guy blocked the door so I was unable to leave the room.
That's it. Sure, there are clipping issues, AI issues, etc. Every game has that. EVERY GAME. Even Game of the Year Uncharted 2 had some buggy moments and plenty of clipping. That sure didn't pull me away from the core experience.
I never cared for any of the Medal of Honor games. This was the First MOH that I actually enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to experience the life of a soldier in Afgan.
I'm a happy gamer.
all in all a good game, multiplayer is good and enjoyable on the home theatre system it sounded great..but tis buggy!! on multiplayer i felt like the game was slowing down towards the end of the map sum kind of memory leak ? there were quite common on early dice products (pc)
when the map starts sometimes i can get straight in other times it seems to take ages!
I'd like to see an army operative (or any other military personnel) comment on MoH who isn't directly or indirectly involved with MoH production, to get that clear, unbiased viewpoint on how MoH reflects their status..
Currently playing the campaign and thoroughly enjoying it. Online though really didnt do it for me so im putting mw2 back on for that side of it.I honestly believe the single player is better than mw2.
