So what if it doesn't have "Modern Warfare" in the title? It's the "Call of Duty" part that counts, right?
Last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 eventually topped $1 billion in sales and remains one of the most popular games of this or any generation, but Treyarch may top Infinity Ward in the pre-order department. According to what GameStop senior vice president of merchandising Bob McKenzie told GameSpot , Black Ops may surpass its predecessor:
"GameStop is tracking to all-time, record reservations on Call of Duty: Black Ops. We are ahead of where we were with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year, which previously set the industry standard."
We don't have any concrete numbers but we'll take his word for it. However, as GameSpot notes, McKenzie's words fall in line with the pre-order prediction made by Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson this past summer. Of course, Activision always thinks every new CoD installment will break records and become the "biggest entertainment launch of all time" but you can't really blame them…because it keeps happening. Still, Wilson and other analysts don't believe Black Ops will top Modern Warfare 2 in terms of overall sales.
…not that the anticipated 12 million units sold this holiday season is something to sneeze at.

Yay? *sneezes*

anyone else want to see a cash cow die, its already old and getting shitier the more they rush and dust in some new stuff
Ouch. I thought MW2 was teh best game evah?!
Are you not an advocate that sales, don't make the game?
Should I have left the sacasm tag?
I must say that Activision has to really love the CoD series. It is raking in an obscene amount of money for them. However I am not sure if it will top MW2. I know a few of my CoD fanatics are not going to buy this one, I think it's because they think the series is milked out or something.
Wait a minute, the ridiculous amount of pre-orders for this "set the industry standard"? No good game can ever live up to the crazy mainstream sales of CoD. That isn't really fair to the other games out there to be held up to such lofty preorder standards. Only the truly mediocre can gain that status.
Bank Machine.
I really don't find it fair, CoD is a great franchise but unlike Rockstar, they don't spend huge money on the game.
While there's no massive budget on their games, yet CoD manage to sell like it's a $100million budget game.
I don't know what is running through the CoD fans head.
I find it best not to look toward the CoD fanatics inner thought. It is so twisting and contradicting it's just plan disturbing, trust me I know a lot of them. However it would make a good Twilight Zone episode.
I sort of envy the CoD fans, it isn't THEIR franchise that is being destroyed by developers and publishing houses who want the massive sales that a whole different genre gets.
That's interesting because as a fps fan I feel genuinely regretful and even a little guilty that my support for the this oversaturated genre is having the effect of limiting the overall diversity of the medium.
On the one hand, its great that there are more options for shooter fans than ever before, but on the other, because this is now the most profitable genre, the financial incentive is reduced for developers to create experimental IPs and to innovate other less popular genres, which isn't good for the health and evolution of the medium.
u feel guilty oh good god its just a game
This is rather surprising. I guess Treyarch releasing game footage that looks very similar to MW was a plus.
COD fans are amazing, u gotta give it to them. If activision starts releasing two COD games/year, still they'll make the "biggest entertainment launch".
Well that's odd. Most of the people that I've spoken to on the topic say that they'll be getting MoH instead as they feel as if CoD is getting burnt out.
Peace.
CoD is falling off the grid i feel. Only reason that this one MIGHT break the record is because zombies is on it and everyone i know is getting it for that reason alone. Friends told me they're getting MoH for the multi an CoD for Zombies. I may have to break down an get it for zombies..i miss it.
The Call Of Duty franchise has yet to put out a bad game, so I hope this one's on par with the rest of the series. I don't have this one pre-ordered because I want to wait for some reviews. Treyarch makes me a bit nervous.
I don't know what you are nervous about. Treyarch put out the best COD game to date with W@W and I think Black Ops will be even better with the return of Gary Oldman and the addition of Ed Harris. I can't wait. Treyarch can really put a storyline together.
Don't listen to this guy. W@W was boring and the sp suffered from major design flaws.
yeh lol the only thing w@w had going for it was zombies tbh it barley had a story and the mp was no where near as good as iw's effort
black ops looks like its gunna b an absolutely enormous title. with top notch multiplayer, what appears to be a more engaging single player campaign than MW2, zombies, theater mode, wager matches, 3d… yeah, its gunna b great.
will it shut the haters up? hopefully, but not likely.
Well, can the possibly be campaign be less entertaining than MW2? Seriously, it was pretty much 5 hours of mind numbing plot.
i dunno y everyone hates on mw2 single player i love it…..its short but so sweet and i love cpt price and poor ghost
i don't hate it at all! i luved it, but it just felt like it was missing something… oh well.
call me a cow 4 buying this game, but ill be a happy cow.
and happy cow's come from california 🙂
Because it just wasn't that good Godslim, glad you like it but most people didn't.
I dislike it because it was a nice little story but over all it like "Wait, that it?" after you finish it. Way to short and sorta a plot boring, but it does have a nice twist in there.
However I do think Black Ops will be better due to the better story in W@W, specifically the Russian.
no surprise.
as ive said many times, COD, FF, halo are 3 games that could be a cow eating grass for 10 hours and they would still sell millions!!!!!!
CoD…make your money. Crazy how popular their franchise has become, but it shows how mainstream America loves average shooters. CoD has beautiful controls and plays it part well, but…it's kind of tired and weak when compared to KZ. KZ2 really set the level for me just like Ben said. CoD has razor sharp aiming while KZ has that either lovable or annoying heaving feel, but outside of that…Killzone just has better gameplay…though I am not taking anything anyway from black ops. I might pick this up too because I need a new online game. Blacks Ops looks like it going to turn out to be a very good game. MW2 wasn't bad…but I'm not sure it should have sold so much…how MP gaming is killing simple logic.
Agreed this is exactly my thoughts about kz2.

That's just sad.people are buying without knowing
is it a good game or not.just sad.
This game will have it flaws just like other Duties (RCXD, balckbird china lake etc….) but It will be the best duty since cod4. If you ask me this is like a prequel to duty 4. The timeline actually relfects with that one guy from WAW as he is in BO now. I guess there must be a family timeline as well between dude from WAW and Cpt Price
"…GameStop senior vice president of merchandising Bob McKenzie…"
Oh, so that's what Bob McKenzie is up to these days. I wonder if his brother, Doug, is there also or still at the brewery.
Or, it could be the (TSN?) hockey analyst.
Im not surprised really. When I stopped by to dig for some PS2 games I want to add to my collection the GameStop rep kept asking me to pre order this game. I kindly declined(have 20USD on MOH) but he pestered me no more then 6 times. I told him not interested and grabbed my game(Ar Tonlico 2) and left. Its like they are trying to bully you into it.
I would not be the least bit surprised if the employees are getting prizes for reaching certain levels of pre-orders. Do 10 Black Ops pre-orders get movie tickets or itunes store gift card, 25 pre-orders get the game itself free, etc. Then probably other prizes for best
in store, district, region, country.
I'm going to get Black Ops, but i don't think i will be getting any new installments after Black Ops.
The only reason why i still play them is because of friends and i still need to get other games that are out as well, I'm falling behind. :/
The "Friend" reason seems to be why many of us end up buying CoD games.
Indeed.
MW2 was a failure in multiplayer. Good thing I didn't buy it. BFBC2 is so much better. Treyarch did a good job on W@W and Black Ops set in the cold war, this will be great with different weapons and doing it with style.
I like to bash games I don't own too, it makes me feel better.
Thats doesn't mean he didn't play it. I know plenty of people who played MW2 and didn't buy the game. They borrowed or rented it and felt the same way.
i loled at bfbc being better
