There has been a lot of talk about Dante's new look in the Devil May Cry remake. Well, it's because Japan (aka Capcom) told Ninja Theory to "go crazy."
In speaking to Develop , Ninja Theory's Nina Kristensen said "the concepts for Dante went through a lot of different iterations" and that the team "went really far out with some." It's becoming clear that Dante's redesign was a major focal point of the game's development, and it's also clear that Capcom – not Ninja Theory – pushed the designers to twist Dante even further. Said Kristensen:
"The first time we sent our initial concepts to Capcom Japan, they said no, no you need to push it way further. Because, obviously, Dante is a big character for Capcom, we stuck fairly close to the original design template. But Japan said we needed to go much further, go crazy with it, and so we did."
The redesign hasn't gone over well with the long-time fans, and even the original Dante's creator, Hideki Kamiya, doesn't seem too thrilled with the overhaul. He recently said he misses his old creation and when pressed on his Twitter page to comment on the DMC reboot, Kamiya simply replied, "whatever." Hardly an excited comment.
But if you're one of the haters, make sure you point the finger in the right direction. Ninja Theory may have devised the look, but only at the behest of Capcom…a publisher that desperately wants to cater more to Western audiences, like many Japanese game companies today.

I like the idea of mental asylum Dante now that I've had time to think and reflect on it. I may not like the new character look, but I'm sure I can get used to it. My biggest worry now is in the combat. Both of NT's games so far have used a simplified combat system in order to keep the focus on the story, but that will need to change for DmC, as that isn't what this franchise is about. It'll still be fast, but I'm worried as to how it will turn out.
Peace.
They said that they're fans of the original series themselves & that they wanted to make the gameplay like the cool ass cutscenes DMC is known for so this will probably be the 1st game were they actually do something more with the combat, but what do I know I'm just speculating at this point.

Still looks pretty good, but I have to agree with the folks who say DMC doesn't need a reboot yet, it needs to go forward. But then I had no problem with Nero, I know a lot of people did.
He, I didn't have a problem with Nero either. I had a problem with Raiden though, but got used to it.
I worry more for fans of the franchise because NT is involved in general. The design is just fun to make fun of. 😉 NT are overrated in my humble opinion. 🙂
I don't think NT is overrated. I do think they are performing below their capabilities, be it for whatever reasons. They haven't met the quality that Heavenly sword had recently, and they also need to develop more to form a proper judgment.
@World:
DMC doen't need a reboot, here are my reasons why, from a previous post:
"I'll give you an explanation…
They're trying a reboot….WHY??? No more stories to tell about Dante?? Well, here are some ideas:
–Dante's descendent into Hell itself seen at the end of DMC2 and having another epic battle against Mundus…
–Vergil's journey into Hell after DMC3 and his eventual defeat at the hands of Mundus…
— How about Lady's story and how she became a devil hunter herself??? We've had other games where a girl is the main protagonist…
Those are my reasons for disliking the new DMC and the whole reboot thing…"

McClane you silly double poster!
Nah, I was just trying to make a point, sometimes people don't read the whole thread…
I agree with you, there was much more universe to explore. Apparently the second your sales slump you have to reboot these days.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark here. I think Ninja Theory is probably not that big of a development team. I mean they've come out with 2 games in the past 3-4 years. I will also say that i don't think they are overrated. I think they just need to hone their skills more. I'd say that they'd at least need to have 3 games out to make a proper judgement on them like Ergi said. 2 games is just not enough to really show how versatile they are. In any case their first 2 games are quality titles. Maybe not elite but hey, you gotta start somewhere. Don't think there have been a whole lot of developers that just make an Elite AAA title right off the bat. Oh well most of the bashing comes from the people who are already cynical anyways. People who complain and hate 90% of the time. Nothing is ever good enough. Sad…
I don't think dantes new look will kill off my appreciation for the game. It's not like this is a date I'm going on and quite frankly I very rarely pay attention to the character I'm playing.I made it through 8 bit characters and expect to survive a characters appearance despite the difference.
it's a shame that these companies aren't hearing out our voice on this whole japan thing. western style isn't japans business.this fad about our taste in america is getting stupid! If I wanted western style graphics and gameplay, I wouldn't be interested in japanese companies when in fact its the exact opposite.
If japanese game companies fall off the boat, it's purely their own misled fault. Sad. its like they think we all like the same food and haircuts too. stop being r-tards!
if they take jump canceling out,i'll never touch this game.
In lieu of all the recent character overhauls Gearbox is "re-imagining" Duke Nukem! haha man people would be pissed! The only time I care about how my character looks is if I can see the tops of boots sticking through pant legs or another problem. The Fun Factor, Design Quality, and Playability are all paramount to character design in my opinion.
The redesign sucks. Who the hell is actually trying to convince themselves otherwise?
Capcom's only great franchise at the moment is Street Fighter. And they still haven't ruined Megaman and Monster Hunter. But other than that all their other franchises are a shadow of their former selves.
They didn't ruin MeganMan?
Megaman Legends >.<
I've learned in the past not to be too critical of a game till I've actually had a hands on play through of it and I will apply that train of thought to this game. However my jab, like many others, is directed at his new look. So they're trying to appeal to the west yet his redesign is somewhat typical of a Japanese inspired manga character or what have you. Remember when we played as Raiden in mgs2? A lot of people were like "wh…what? Where's Snake?".
I know the demograph they're focusing on is mainly males but as a female I'm not inclined to choose the young male model look. Then again I hate the beefy ones as well. I don't know, heck the game might turn out to be so damn fun that I won't care what he looks like, kinda like mgs2 in the end.
I don't know bout you guys but I think more franchise are going to be handed to western developers.
They don't wanna risk it with new IP so they're letting them doing the franchise instead.
Maybe insurance so that if the game failed to live up to expectation it will at least sell based on brand name.
This is just my theory though.
While I have many doubts. Hopefully this experience helps Ninja Theory become more of a leader in this genre of play.
I just really hope they don't gimp the fps to 30fps. UE3 powered and Ninja Theory's game's have all signs pointing to 30fps.. What makes me more concerned is the hiccuping, popping and skipping that can be felt in Enslaved… lets hope none of that makes it in =
I like ninja theory. I just hate they had to reboot the series. I still have a lot question especially about Sprada.
Capcom went nuts and will fail, just second behind sqeeeeenix, epic fail!
DMC's Dante is one of the coolest character in video gaming, does not need any change whatsoever!
honestly, can someone please explain to me what the ^%$%# is wrong with capcom?
pleasssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!????????
they completely change and f*ck up DMC4, the fans come hurling rocks.
so to fix that they do the same with RE5.
so to fix that they do the same with DMC reboot?
ok, our fans completely hated this so to win them back were going to do the same???????
ok, can someone please explain to me the logic in that?????????
normally if people hate a certain aspect of something, your suppose to change it, NOT KEEP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats it, its official, crapcom are now officially the worst company in the video game industry!!!!!!
worst than $E, sega, and antivision put together!!!!!!!!!!
I was disappointed at first, but now I'm curious to see how it evolves. Let's see some gameplay. 🙂
well to those that took my comment personally need to look at it like this…i was talking about me personally. i can be direct with no problem but thats not why im here.
if a strange dude walks up to you and say "hey i like your hair & your clothes" im sure in all honesty you would feel a little akward & slightly think that guy MIGHT be a little gay but if a female say it your confidence gets a little boost. i dont knock anyone on this site I understand everyones point of view but hearing guys complain about another guys hair and clothes makes me a little confused. if it was female character i could understand. like guys who wear pink…i dont understand ( i have friends who do) i wouldnt put pink on my son. i guess im from another era of men. no offence to anyone who do.
Fine I won't blame NT for changing his looks (I don't even mind that part particularly), but I can still blame them if the framerate doesn't hold up and the combat system is inferior to the original series.
what i dont like about him now is that he doesnt have white hair, that was one of the many things that made him cool, hell almost every young male protagonist that has white hair is a total badass, now hes plain, because he has black hair
