New Silent Hill Will Use Silent Hill 2 As Primary Inspiration

Silent Hill: Homecoming was okay, but horror fans really just want the next big production to arrive.

That is what is currently known as "Silent Hill 8." And thanks to a translation posted at Hell Descent , we have a new update: Czech gaming site Doupe spoke with the Lead Designer of the new SH installment, Mark Berka, and first off, he explains how they'll be "moving away from the more action-oriented feel of Silent Hill: Homecoming ." In fact, they're trying for something more similar to Silent Hill 2 as the latter survival/horror classic on the PS2 will be a "primary influence in terms of atmosphere." Oh, and if you're worried about the team taking any inspiration from the movie – which went over well with some, but not with others – Berka says this won't happen. We also like to hear they're going to place a big emphasis on the psychological horror aspects of the franchise; after all, this is the reason the games are so damn freaky. It's not about blood and gore and it certainly isn't about action; it's about the sensation . Ask Hitchock.

Silent Hill 8 will follow the story of escaped convict Murphy Pendleton's journey into the haunted village. Berka says a convict is a good pick as a main character because he has "so much background and depth." We can't wait to hear more!

Though I personally thought the atmosphere of the first Silent Hill was a HELL of a lot scarier than SH2, this is still good news to me. Though I don't really have too high hopes for this game, I'm still looking forward to it.

I agree, but it's better than staying with how Homecoming was going, right? lol. SH2 was still good, I wouldn't have minded if they used SH3 aspects. That game had some crazy happenings, it's my favorite one.

Silent Hill (1) is my fave of them all. Definitely the scariest too.

Though SH4 was wow….I can't even begin to tell you how anxious that game had me. They really went all out with SH4. But yeah SH1 was really something.

I have yet to play 3 and 4, but I'm hoping to get some used copies pretty soon. 1-4 are the only ones I care about owning (possible exception for the new one, time will tell), as they were the only ones developed by the original team. It's the only series I've ever had to stop my play sessions due to the excess anxiety involved.

Good to hear they've finally found out what actually makes a game scary, I look forward to hearing more about this 🙂

I wasn't as pleased with SH2 as most, but maybe that's because I waited until recently to play it. Homecoming was good but broken in the respect that if you ever get down to a tiny bit of health there is no mechanism to help like a life refill after continue or dropping items. And the combat mechanic is set up so that it is impossible to not be hit when you are ganged up on.

This new one is sounding cool though, I bought the PS1 classic and put it on my PSP and it's good times.

Everytime you continue in homecoming you had a half full life refill even in hard….

I don't remember that at all. Though I suppose it doesn't matter when the only way through the part you are stuck on has you against two sharkheads and three dogs at once. I'll have to start it over some day. Running just makes it worse.

Trust me, you do get the refill, I played that POS 5 times to see all endings…

Major f*cking dissapointment and waste of time….

EDIT: Make that 7 times, had to play 2 more rounds because of that infamous "PS3 date error", it screwed up 2 of my saves…

Damn man, I think if I got through the whole game I could only stand it once.

Yes, imagine my frustration when I get all endings and they last no longer than 1 minute at the most each…

Something I could have watched on Youtube wasting maybe 5 minutes instead of wasting almost 5 to 7 hours per round….

Maybe he meant MORE than just ONE…

Or maybe he is hoping RE returns as survival horror which I REALLY doubt

i played REone for the gamecube…
THAT was survival horror. always being low on health supplies, critically low on ammo, scant pick-ups, and no store to restock ur supplies. on top of that, those zombies were damn bullet sponges, and the atmosphere was as creepy as neverland ranch… with zombies.
i would totally play a game with that setting

Don't be wreckless, Dead Space is much more Survival Horror than RE5. Unless you are comparing the Dead Space 2 multiplayer to Survival Horror, that wouldn't make sense though.

In RE5 ammo was plentiful and there was no horror. Not exactly survival horror. Resident Evil USED to be survival horror. 5 officially killed it as a survival horror franchise.

Like Booze said, Resident Evil Remake on Gamecube is survival horror. Play that one if you haven't. The graphics are still decent for a game that's as old as it is.

@Booze, those Crimson Heads were horrifying. That remake was the best horror game i have ever played.

There's Siren Blood Curse, arguably the scariest game this gen.

OMG remember the first time u encountered one? n u realized that all the zombies u killed actually had a time limit before they became crimson heads?
my exact though was "wait, how many zombies have i ki-……. uh-oh."

"And if you're worried about the team taking any inspiration from the movie – which went over well with some, but not with others – Berka says this won't happen."

Really? Because the trailer looked A LOT like the movie and Homecoming…

Anyway, I am hoping this franchise returns to its roots and I was hoping they took more inspiration from SH3, IMO the scariest in the series…

It's good to hear that this one is staying far away as possible from the action genre, if someone can say SH:H had any action at all…

Have all the SH games (Homecoming isn't a SH). Just missing the psp one. Ok ok don't have them all. But I have the 'main' ones.

Great series. Definitely scary and very enjoyable in its own adventurous ways.

SH while very psychotic is pure quality. The story alone is always top notch.

Hope this team does a good job. The trailer they released a while ago looks solid. Can't wait to see more. Hopefully the fact that it's multiplatform doesn't hold them back.

2? Crap I must have missed more than I thought lol…

Ahem, will need to get them then.
So, Origins and Shattered memories

They both came out for ps2 as well so getting it on that, better.

I've only got the third game. Haven't gotten around to playing for any real length of time. The controls annoyed the hell out of me. I'm so used to be moving relative to the camera that moving relative to the direction of the character threw me. Not to mention that it took me forever to work out how to use weapons. So yeah, I've played about an hour of it. I'll get back to it before 8 releases though.
Peace.

please konami enough of this torture porn, gore for the sake of gore ala homecoming that was just stupid!
thats not what silent hill is all about, its about claustrophobic tense atmosphere.
its not about the combat, its not about what is around the corner, its about what could be around the corner.
its so disappointing to see the horror genre take such a steep dive this gen, ps1, ps2 days you almost had a horror game a month and all were fantastic!
to be honest theres not one game i could call a horror game this gen.
F.E.A.R was close, a great game but too much action not enough scares, fear 2 was a repeat of that but more action less scares.
same for RE5, dead space, and siren blood curse was more of a stealth game than a horror game.
yea, go hide in the closet till the "murderer" disappears out of sight.
yea thats real fun just stare at a guy walking past for 10 minutes.
yea thats how i want to spend my free time!
thats soooooooooooooooooo much fun!!!!!!!!!
