NBA Elite 11 Delay Should Benefit The Competition

If you haven't heard, EA has been forced to delay NBA Elite 11 – designed to "emphasize player movement and skill-based shooting" – until they're positive they can "deliver a breakthrough basketball experience."

We're still not sure when it'll arrive, but it definitely won't show up next month, when it was initially expected to release. If you check GameStop's database, they have a placeholder date of March 31, 2011, which just so happens to be the end of the publisher's fiscal year. But you know, such delays can really hurt. According to GameSpot citing a note to investors penned by Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, EA has lost significant sales by delaying the highly anticipated game. Therefore, he lowered Wedbush's projections from $1.52 to $1.46 billion for the holiday quarter; a loss of around $60 million. Furthermore, because it won't be around for the holidays, Pachter believes it won't sell as much as it would've had it launched next month. Now, he thinks it'll only sell maybe 500,000 copies, which is admittedly only 50,000 less than the 550,000 he anticipated with the October release.

By the way, this should prove beneficial to the competition: 2K's NBA 2K11 could stand to inherit a lot of sales, simply because it'll be the only b-ball game around for the holidays. By the way, NBA Jam will drop for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this holiday season, too, but Pachter said an arcade-y game isn't a "true substitute" for NBA Elite 11 .

Do people really still play basketball videogames? I'm all for NBA Jam but unfortunately Basketball IMO has never translated well to a real simulation of the sport.

I'm with you on this one LV. I'll probably pick up NBA Jam honestly, but just for the nostalgia but a basketball simulator just isn't really that appealing to me. However, I do enjoy the NHL games and I understand some people find them equally as uninteresting…then again some people like NASCAR.

I do. I think Basketball simulations are great. That may be because I'm an NBA fan though.

Anyway, I'm a 2K fan when it comes to the series. EA never did it for me. They were close in their 2010 season game though.

I haven't bought a basketball game since 2K3, but that's mostly because I'm feeling negative about the NBA as a whole, especially since the bastards moved my Sonics.

The inclusion of Jordan and other stars from the 80's and 90's (i.e., players I like) makes 2K11 a possible bargain-bin buy. Elite…not so much.

B-ball video games can be fun but there not worth the bucks($$$).
This is going to hurt EA but like it's going to have that much of a impact any ways.
The only EA game I'm looking forward to and really want to do well is Medal of Honor. Now there is a game.

it wouldn't sell more than 2k11 anyways, that game has Michael Jordan in it, and thats pretty much a sure sell over its competition.

Was never going to compete with 2K11 anyway! If you even remotely like basketball, love him or hate him, Michael Jordan would surely be enough to tilt any decision towards 2k? Releasing a game midway through the NBA season wont help either!

@aaronisbla & Socrates: who is Michael Jordan ? i was gonna buy NBA Elite over 2k11 anyways but since EA is chicken **** to released on the same day as 2k i guess i'll buy 2k.

MJ was the man behind the Gay movement in Seattle during the early 70s.

Played the demo and I keep searching for the sprint button only to realise there's no sprint button.

I can't even make a dunk when I'm on the counter-attack. I'm plenty satisfied with the demo except for the lack of sprinting.

And even if Elite gets release before the start of the season, 2K11 got MJ23 in it and that's a massive selling point.

I myself could care less about playn with the great MJ. I ve played tons of games with him or his likeness a thousand times. Im not sure the younger gen will care too much its like when I was growing up and i think it was NBA LIVE (I forget what year) they put alot of legends in the game. i didnt care too much. Pistol Pete? who cares I like SHAQ & PENNY….no disrespect to Pete it was all I knew I never had the chance to see him play.
Anyway I think its good that they delay it but….that long? why not December when nothing is coming out? EA slackin in their mackin…unless they are adding Magic Johnson or Larry Bird…lol
