Mass Effect 2 is finally coming to the PlayStation 3 next year and although PS3 owners have had to wait, BioWare promises they won't be stymied by a very different platform.
Firstly, the PS3 version will boast a new introduction (so if you didn't get a chance to play the original ME, you won't feel lost) and secondly, BioWare founder Greg Zeschuk recently told PSM3 that the team has worked hard to tackle an all-new architecture. Zeschuk isn't about to let things downshift into a console war, but instead, he makes it plain that they can do "whatever they want" on either platform. As he said:
"The important thing is that, fundamentally, [PS3] has a very different architecture. Visually, there are probably some changes – I mean, there are differences in the way the memory is allocated, and the graphical processor is all different.
We're not going to get pulled into the argument over which is the more powerful; at the end of the day, they both are, and we can do whatever we want on them. When you create games, you want as many people as possible to play them, so this is a great opportunity to reach a huge segment of the market."
He did go on to say he thinks ME2 on the PS3 "will play a little differently;" even the change to a different controller will make things a touch different, you know? Clearly, BioWare isn't about to say the PS3 version will be graphically superior – we're guessing any differences will be minimal – but the important thing is their work ethic: if every developer insisted on getting it just right on both major platforms, we'd all be better off, yes?
Related Game(s): Mass Effect 2
I like their attitude and this only adds to my already high anticipation on this release. However I guess the new introduction means that it's definitely never going to be any release of the first ME on ps3… And that's kinda sad.
I think the reason we won't see ME1 is because MS owns the publishing rights to it.
Actually MS doesn't own the rights to MassEffect. EA does, so the decision to not release the original ME for the PS3 is
on EA.
I really hope that introduction lets you make the important descitions from the first game
I really don't think that can be done. Those important decisions really won't carry much weight from the first game when it is being presented to you in a summary–or selected scenes segment.
When a player builds relationships by actually playing the game can they feel the emotional weight and consequence of making a decision.
Yeah but there are alot of people like me who loved the first game and want the opportunity to have at least there important descitions be accessable on their platform of choice

BTN, do you have a decent computer? MW1 will run on a $30 videocard.
I see now what you mean BTNwarrior. I think that'd be cool to accommodate those who've already played the first game but want to play it's sequel on the PS3.
BTN, well, unless you have a Mac… hehe well then you're pretty well screwed.
=p
I have the first game on 360 i also have the second game, but my 360 just died for the 5th time and my best buy 2 year warranty is up so I would love to get the game for ps3 and have at least the major decisons be optional. Cause it would seem wrong to be stuck with nothing but the bad descitions from the first game
Ugh, i bought MW1 for my PC when it was on sale from Steam for sh!ts and giggles, i couldnt get it to connect online. Bummer.
I'm halfway through the first ME. I wish it were coming to PS3 because, I really want to get 2 on the PS3 but I definitely want to carry my character and her decisions over, so I have to get it for the 360.
I hear you there. I'm on the fence myself. I think everything depends on what kind of unique benefits PS3 users will have. If the PS3 version does include all of the expansion content, and the game performs well enough, I'd be tempted to get the PS3 version instead.
I suppose if the game is good enough I can always play the game for both systems. And get the bonus content on the PS3 edition rather than paying out for it on LIVE.
Beamboom,
When BioWare first announced M2 for the PS3, Microsoft was quick to throw out a press release, that although M2 might be going to another console, M1 belonged solely to Microsoft Studio's & would never fly their coop.
I hate politically correct statements. BUT ME2 is a fun game with a great storyline and I'm glad PS3 owners are finally getting the chance to enjoy the series.
Here's the un-edited non-politically correct statement of what REALLY happened =p
"Sure, the graphics will be about the same… *ahem* but I don't really know because hehe I'm just shooting from the hip here because all I do now is… *ahem*… well, I can't really say…. seriously, you think after KotoR I ever needed to write a line of code again? hehe oh man, don't miss those days…
*beep buzz beep* oh crap, gotta take this call.. Sup Peter! … sure lets do bowling.."
If they handle the conversion similarly to how Team Ninja handled Ninja Gaiden 2, ME2 should be in good shape. Problems happen when a dev doesn't try to restructure or re-engineer elements to better accommodate the hardware. But if handled properly, in the end, you''ll get two games that may have differences, but neither one can definitively be considered better from a presentational perspective.
Right off the bat I think Bioware should take advantage of the fact that every PS3 has an HDD present.

Don't forget that ME2 is released on PC too – so they will quite probably use the ps3 hdd.
The real issue is when the games released they know the ps3 version is going to be superior to 360 version, hence there going to take alot of flak from 360 users, doubt it going on mass effect 2 forums and read how upset alot 360 users were about the ps3 getting mass effect 2.
These guys who are waiting a year to release their game on the PS3 don't want to start a console war? Man some people are funny.
As for me, I may pick it up when it goes the Bioshock route about three months after release, or I may not. First one wasn't much of an RPG if you ask me.
Agreed
I think its all about too much power and how to use it. Working within the 360 architecture and then experiencing the PS3 ver probably surprised them. All that extra power/hdd space and open online structure has them at a loss atm.
I assume that the first ME was Microsoft owned and thats why it's not comin to ps3?
No, EA does.
@LimitedVertigo Actually, Microsoft owned the original rights for Mass Effect on the 360, while EA published the PC port, developed by Demiurge Studios.
EA owns everything post-ME1, though.
I remembered Ben posting an article in regards to comments made by Bioware informing us that Mass Effect would not be coming to the PS3. So I took the time to browse for it and there's an interesting quote. This statement was given back in 2008 by the CEO of Bioware in explanation of why ME1 would not be on the PS3.
"the most important thing is quality, so we're never going to compromise that."
I guess now they're compromising quality by putting ME2 on the more advanced piece of hardware.

I don't see what's the big deal with hiding the PS3 version. They knew it's coming. It's not like existing Xbox gamers will buy a PS3 just because they know the PS3 version is coming one year later. There is not a big lost to Microsoft. I say the big lost to them is paying for timed exclusivity.
LV, actually that's not correct.
Microsoft published the first ME1, & owns the exclusive rights to it. EA now has possession of everything done after ME1 though.
FYI, I had to dig into the archives here, all the way to Aug 17th where I had first posted it, but here's the original post again….
Microsoft Responds to Mass Effect 2 Jumping Ship
Company says Mass Effect 1 remains Xbox 360 exclusive.
August 17, 2010
Microsoft has responded to today's announcement of Mass Effect 2 coming to PlayStation 3.
The game first launched in January 2010 for Xbox 360 and PC, and is now headed to PS3 a year later in January 2011.
"With both Mass Effect titles launching first on Xbox 360 combined with the wealth of available paid downloadable content on Xbox Live today, Xbox 360 remains the best place to experience the Mass Effect franchise," a representative said in a statement given to IGN.
Mass Effect 1, first published by Microsoft in 2007, will remain exclusive to Xbox 360.
"And the original Mass Effect is absolutely an Xbox 360 exclusive, making Xbox 360 the only place to get the full Mass Effect experience," the company added.
Hmm, well I have an article from the summer of 2009, in it Matt Atwood (of Bioware) says EA owns the rights to ME and not to rule out ME coming to the PS3. But hey, I could be wrong since your information is from 2010.
Anyone else have come information on this?
I would guess that M$ has exclusive publishing rights to ME1 (on consoles), but Bioware owns the rights to the "Mass Effect" IP. Both statements would then be more or less accurate.
However, keep in mind Microsoft's tenuous relationship with the truth.

I hope that doesn't mean that PS3 will look bad. Come on no more bad ports.
Well if they're not retarded like how Capcom handled Dead Rising 2 everything should be okay.
Dead Rising 2 PS3: 576p w/2xMSAA, massive screen tearing, and significantly unstable frame-rate.
Dead Rising 2 360: 720p w/2xMSAA, v-synced, and more solid frame-rate.
see DF for the Face-Off and comparison screens and vids.
I finally have a computer which makes Mass Effect running not painful. Such a tremendous achievement Mass Effect. I will most likely have played Mass Effect 2 already before it comes out on the ps3 but I see no reason why I won't want to buy it and play it again. It'll be a joy to experience it again in a different way and I can have a different running character for when mass effect 3 comes out on both pc and ps3.
as much as i enjoyed the game, i wish EA would stop wasting time and release a game on ps3 people actually want.
ME2 was a great game, but most who wanted to play it already have.
i wish they would release L4D2 since it got banned here, and 50 bucks it would get passed no problems now.
well, it would have to i mean how can GOW3 and dead rising 2 be suitable for a MA rating but L4D2 not?
pfft, sorry but mass effect is the game I want from EA. Couldn't give a stuff about L4D2. It also effectively means we have 3 as a given.
You whine that EA is wasting time by releasing a game for the PS3 already released for the 360 and PC but then beg for another game that's already been released for the 360 and PC.
GREAT LOGIC yet again from you.
@ LV – love it.
also, __________, maybe you should move since all you ever do is complain about your country and their policies and prices….
its common sense, L4D is not a story driven game is it?
obviously you did not read the rest of the post, i explained why i wanted this is because it got banned here, hence i was not able to play it.
o, n, i would move if i could but sadly moving countries is not free.
that is of course unless someone has free plane tickets, a house and a job set up for me.
You can apply for work over the internet, and most companies that hire trained professionals will interview via skype now. You could sell the house you're in now to pay for a new one. And now, all your left with is travel costs… which you could offset with the sale of your current home.
If you're renting right now, then just rent wherever you go.

Underdog to the rescue!
It's a pass for me, the gameplay footage I watched
are boring.
If the gameplay is boring to me, how can the RPG element suck me in.
This is why I never replayed my DA:O.
Eeach to their own, 3rd playthrough, lots of DLC of DA for me. Even gonna grab the novel. love the comics. I've never been disappointed by Bioware yet.
Guess WRPG just isn't my thing when I care alot how the game plays more than how the story plays.
DA:O's battle system wasn't that great but I find it better in FFXII and I don't know why.
I think I've said this before but I've never been big on shooters but I'll start giving them a try.
As long as this game is the same quality as the 360 version I am sold.
I'm also excited about this but mostly went out of my way to post regarding ME1 and their decisions to alter the intro to ME2. Firstly, the change in the intro is very welcomed! Let us not forget that they are releasing the Second game first. I think many people are reading far to deep between the lines to realize that this isn't the end of the world.. Or the end of the conversation regarding ME1 on PS3.
Quite simply, it means that they are anxious to move production of ME2 onto the PS3 without worrying themselves about their first games storyline and its' influence on the second carnation. I'm sure their focus is moving forward before worrying about the past, so it's a safe guess to assume ME1 will not see the light of day until..
A.) They see the outcome of ME2 on the PS3 and
B.) They feel a commitment to offer more with the eventual release of ME3.
So if you boys and girls are kind enough to spoil them with purchases, the outreach to produce the first, date I'd say, game to the console. I wouldn't imagine they would go as far into specializing it for the PS3 because interest won't be as great as a newer game, though.
I can't wait to see how this plays out! I only played it through on the PC once. Anyone who knows this game would realize you can easily play it a few times over and have a different experience with a mostly similiar plot.
AWESOME game!
They have MLAA on the Sony Edge Tools, they can use the SPU's in parallel for post processing effects to off load the GPU work.
The versatility is there its a matter of will and Devs pride.
Are you gonna impress me Bioware?? I hope so….
36 days left…
